Book Title: Bill and the Whistling Death
Author's Name: CroodsGirl
Chapter One: Incident at Patriots Point - Chapter Five: Willed
Total: 100/100
At First Glance (Title/Cover/Blurb): 10/10
Without a doubt, the title and the cover are perfect. The only thing I could say about either is that your name is slightly cropped on the cover. The blurb is also flawless. I loved everything about this from the beginning. Adding the URL to the planes and showcasing the story's reality is beautiful. The vocabulary chapter is a nice touch, and standing firm in your point that you have no intentions of making any romance out of your story is excellent, and I applaud you for it. Pointing out that "friendship is a type of love" is something that isn't done often enough.
What's Happening? (Plot): 20/20
First of all, the idea for this story is eye-opening, something more people should consider doing. Veterans go through so much usually, and then you add an extremely traumatic experience on top of it, shining a light on how long a memory of that caliber can stay with a person, even decades later. I adore how you wrote the daughter, her worry about her father shows just how much she loves him. Your plot regarding how to help Bill is well thought out, making me want to see what will happen between him and the other volunteers. How much will he learn from other people, and will making new friendships help ease the guilt of his lost friend?
Go With the Flow (Grammar):
Your grammar is fantastic compared to the majority of writing on Wattpad. You keep your tense correct, words don't repeat too often, and your dialogue is punctuated consistently. I have nothing to offer in this category.
Look How Far They've Come (Characters/Development): 10/10
The first two chapters build on Bill's pain well. The insight into his thoughts and how ingrained in him it is not to feel any emotions at all. By the end of the fifth chapter, not only did I feel for him, but he grew into more than just a grumpy old man who had been traumatized. He has a kind heart and is a wonderful man. Natalie cares for her father so much, which is refreshing to see. She researched a lot to get him into the museum, and the other people there want to help him. The characters you've written are wholesome.
Out of this World (Worldbuilding): 10/10
I enjoy how much effort you put into making the book's setting a real place—so much so that you even work there! Your inside knowledge shines through, making for a smooth read.
I've Never Seen That Before! (Originality): 10/10
This is unlike anything I've read before. Although this is not my usual genre, your story is original in the amount of knowledge you offer and in keeping the central theme of friendship.
I Need More! (Hook): 15/15
There are a lot of hooks! You wrote people who are likable enough that I want to continue reading to see their interactions. I want to know the answers to questions such as: Will Bill be able to keep the dog? Who will he befriend next? Will the new group of people be able to help him with decades of grief? What is this big twist at the end that you've mentioned?
Keep 'Em Coming (Overall Enjoyment): 10/10
I read the first five chapters quickly and twice before starting the review. The story was wholesome, and your writing made devouring your words easy! I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Overall:
Bill and the Whistling Death by @CroodsGirl is a heartfelt story written from the perspective of an old veteran suffering in the worst way with the death of his best friend during wartime. I tried hard to find something to pick apart or to be able to give constructive criticism, but I have nothing to say. The pacing is fantastic, the characters are relatable, the grammar is smooth, and the plot is interesting, sprinkled with real-life facts. I would absolutely recommend this story! I'm sorry this review is short, but I had nothing to criticize!
