Chapter Twenty-Six
Ira lay sleeping in a hospital bed. She wasn't aware of her surroundings, or anything going on outside the peaceful realms of her dreams. No longer was she tormented with visions of death and destruction. Now, images of sunshine and rolling green meadows flashed through her brain.
She could see herself, with the the rest of the team, talking and laughing on a beach as they soaked up the precious rays of sunlight. She saw them sitting together in a flowery glade, a picnic blanket spread out and food surrounding them. She saw them in a lush green forest, swinging from trees and running along the earthy ground.
All of these wonderful images flashed through her mind, filling her heart with joy and happiness. She knew that the terrors of the previous days were over. She wouldn't have to fear for her teammates' lives, or for herself.
And it was in that state of confident bliss, that Ira opened her eyes. She was laying in a hospital bed, the gauzy, sterile, paper rough and scratchy beneath her bare legs. She looked around. The walls were painted a soothing off-white, and a a window allowed bright light to shine through. Her blonde hair was curled around her shoulders, and she was wearing a blue hospital gown. She heard the steady beep of the heart monitor next to her as she gazed around the room.
She noticed Pietro sitting in the chair underneath the window. His hands were folded in his lap nervously, and his foot tapped slightly on the floor. When he saw her looking his way, his eyes lit up and he rushed over to her.
"Hey," he murmured soothingly. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, and tried to sit up, until her chest flared with pain. She gasped, and Pietro quickly helped her lay back down. "Careful," he warned. "Doctor Cho said that you broke a rib."
"What happened?" She asked. "I remember seeing everyone in the ground, and," she shrugged. "It goes fuzzy from there." Try as she might, she couldn't pierce together what had happened after she saw her teammates.
He scratched the back of his neck, and explained. "From what everyone has told me, we all were knocked out by the explosion that hit near us. You were farther away, so you weren't affected. You used up so much energy destroying everything that you passed out. We all woke up and found you on the ground, with Lenerick's ship destroyed."
It all came rushing back in a flood of memories. Seeing everyone on the ground, and fearing the worst. Screaming till her throat was raw and the energy was sapped out of her body. And the world fading to black. Then she had woken up.
"How long have I been here?" She asked him.
"Three days," he replied. Her eyes widened. Three days? It had felt like three hours. But then again, time seemed to pass differently in the world of dreams.
"Where's Lenerick?" She asked.
"He is currently en route to the nearest prison," Pietro said, and a small smile crept over his lips. She allowed herself one too, glad to think that the cause for her pain was locked up behind bars.
"And the compound?"
Pietro ran a hand through his hair. "Almost half of it was destroyed. Mainly where the first blast went off. They're sorting through the rubble now."
Ira glanced down sadly. She had made so many memories in that place that she had come to think of as home. But there was no point crying over it. Soon it would be rebuilt, and she could start about making new memories. "Wait, if the compound was destroyed, then where are we?" She asked him.
"The hospital," he replied. "We rushed you here as soon as we could."
"Where's the rest of the team?"
"Wanda is in the room next door." Seeing Ira's panicked expression, he quickly assured her. "She's alright, she just broke her arm, and depleted most of her energy. She'll be okay. Tony and Steve are overseeing the compound construction, Natasha is with Clint in the room on the other side of Wanda's," he gave a slight tilt with his head, pointing towards the room. "Sam, and Rhodey are helping clear rubble, and Vision is with Wanda in the other room."
As he finished talking, the door opened, and Helen Cho stepped into the room. Her black hair was pinned up into a neat bun at the top of her head, and she wore a long blue surgical dress with a white collar. She smiled at Ira as she walked over to the side of the bed.
"How are you feeling?" She asked.
"Mostly good," Ira replied. "Except my chest still hurts." Dr. Cho nodded.
"You broke one rib and fractured another. They're mostly healed, but I would recommend staying for another day, and then you'll be able to leave. It normally would take longer, but the cells in your body have adapted to you abilities. This means that while you were asleep, your body sped up the healing process. But let it heal on its own. You've been completely depleted of energy, and you need to save it until you're back to normal."
"Thank you," Ira told her appreciatively.
Helen nodded, her warm eyes bright. She smiled kindly, and left the room.
Ira turned to Pietro, her blonde hair sweeping across her face with the movement. "I guess that I'm stuck here for another day," she told him.
"And I'll be right by your side," he assured her. "I'll check up on you and Wanda and make sure you're both okay."
She nodded, and he pressed a small kiss to her forehead. "I'm glad you're okay," he whispered. She smiled, and in that moment, she knew that everything was going to be okay.
