"Who's the kid that you brought with her?" A faint voice asked, gradually bringing Sophia back into actuality. She blinked a few times, her vision still blurry. "You know, I don't care, I'm gonna go get myself a beer."
The footsteps of the man echoed through her head, making her wince. The back of her head hurt, and the softest of noises around her were causing her a headache. The last thing hat Sophia remembered was trying to protect Sonny in the alleyway. As her consciousness gradually became more clear, she soon started to notice her surroundings.
She wasn't in the alleyway any longer.
"S-Sophia? A-Are you h-here?" Sonny stuttered, making her look to the side. He still seemed to be in the process of waking up. She immediately was drawn to the fact that she was tied against Sonny. Back to back. There was a large rope around their chests, while other little ropes were tightly tied around their wrists, as well as their feet. "Where are we Sophia?"
"I-I'm not sure."
Sophia narrowed her eyes, observing the room they were in. It seemed like some sort of basement. The temperature was low, and there were no windows. All that was present was themselves and the stairs that led upstairs. Something felt super familiar, but Sophia couldn't quite point it out.
A indistinct buzzing noise was heard. Sophia and Sonny looked down, seeing that Sophia's phone was buzzing a few feet away from her feet. She grunted in discomfort, attempting to move, but it was nearly impossible. Even if Sonny moved with her, it wouldn't give her enough strength to reach it.
She squinted to see who was calling her, but was distracted as she heard the creaky stairs resound through the room. She swung her eyes up, seeing a pair of shiny black shoes quickly descending down the stairs. Sophia raised her eyes up the figure, glowering at the recognizable malicious smirk that was plastered on the man's face.
He paid no attention to her scowl, and stared at the buzzing phone on the ground. He took a long swig out of the beer bottle, wiping away the leftover liquid that had escaped the bottle onto his lips. He smacked his lips together and walked up to Sophia's phone.
"This Usnavi man just loves calling you, doesn't he? This is like the tenth time he's called," The man pointed out, staring down at the phone in disgust. Sophia scoffed at the grey-haired idiot. "Good thing I don't let my niece date clingy douchebags," The man laughed as he raised his foot and stomped straight onto the phone, shattering the glass and pieces everywhere. "There we go."
"Wait, did he say niece?" Sonny blurted, clearly confused. "Who is this man Sophia?"
"I remember this place now," Sophia muttered, looking up into the eyes of the man who traumatized her childhood. "It's where this asshole locked me for a whole day when I caught him cheating on my aunt."
"Well, I married her while you were off making trouble, therefore, I'm officially your uncle now," The man announced, making Sophia refrain from throwing up. "You're going to have to refer to me as Uncle Salvador."
"In your dreams jackass," Sophia hissed. "I'm not surprised my lowlife aunt married a waste of a life honestly."
"You think I'm a lowlife sweetie?"
Sophia cringed as the high-pitched voice entered her ears. Sophia watched as her aunt's bright red high heels clacked down the wooden stairs. She was always dressing up fancier than what she was really worth.
"Out of all the men you've brought home, you go with the ugliest one?" Sophia asked, looking over at Salvador. "I thought you were better than that Aunt Alicia."
"Aunt? This is the aunt that took care of you when you were younger?" Sonny asked, finally connecting the dots. Sophia nodded. Sonny's eyes widened. "I-I thought you loved her."
"The complete opposite actually," Sophia responded, avoiding looking at her aunt as she made it to the bottom of the stairs. "Why do you think I would never want to come home? It's because she would bring different men home every night, and didn't give a shit about what I thought. Hence, her being married to this douchebag."
"Look sweetheart, all things aside, do you have the money?"
"Oh, so you're choosing Seth up there over your own niece? Your own family? Real nice you tramp," Sophia insulted, taking her aunt aback from that jab. "What's next? You're going to threaten me? Hmm?"
"Honey, the last thing I want is to hurt you—"
"Yeah bullshit," Sophia scoffed in disbelief. "You hurt me the day you didn't show up to my mother's funeral. You hurt me the day you promised you'd be at my ballet recital, but decided to go and get drunk instead. You hurt me the day you forgot me at the store, and I had to walk home alone at night. The things that happened to me that night are unspeakable, and guess who didn't pick up my calls because they were passed out on my couch dead drunk again? You guessed it. This disappointment right in front of me."
"Sophia, I understand that I've done all those things, but those things are in the past—"
"Thus, I should forget about it?" Sophia interrupted, furrowing her eyebrows in anger. "Aunt Alicia, it's hard to forget about those things, and it's impossible to forgive someone who doesn't even have the heart to apologize."
"Young lady, you're getting on my nerves," Sophia's aunt said through clenched teeth, getting closer to her niece. "If you don't cooperate with me, you're going to get us both killed."
"There's the truth," Sophia ridiculed, rolling her hazel brown eyes. "You're only concerned about me having the money because you're being threatened of getting killed too," Sophia acknowledged, making her aunt go silent. "Well, it was nice knowing you."
Her aunt released a frustrated groan before storming off upstairs, her husband following a few steps behind. The door was slammed, leaving Sonny and Sophia alone in the basement once again.
"Damn, I'm sorry to hear all that Sophia, she really doesn't deserve you," Sonny empathized, exhaling deeply afterwards. "What happened in the first place? Like, how much money do you even owe this man?"
"I don't even owe Seth anything, he cheated in a game that I obviously won, but refused to admit it," Sophia explained, laying her head against Sonny's back of his head. "He pulled a knife on me and it freaked me out, so I spoke out of fear, saying that I would get him his thousand dollars."
"Holy shit! A thousand dollars?!" Sonny exclaimed in surprise, making Sophia nod. "That's a ton of cash. How in the world are you going to get the money?"
"That's the least of our worries right now," Sophia spoke, looking around the basement, trying to put together an escape plan. She easily spotted the shattered glass from her phone near them. She inhaled deeply. "Alright Sonny, I got an idea of how to get us out of this, but it's going to involve lots of stealth, speed and strength."
Sonny nodded. "I'll leave the strength part to you, but I definitely have those other two attributes."
Sophia chuckled. "Let's do it."
