v. back in danger
Haven quirked her dark brow, deep brown eyes focused on the figure in front of her.
Jacob felt his stomach flutter with nerves, not sure where to start when apologizing to the girl sat on a chair in Emily's room, where the two had found themselves some privacy alone from the wolves.
After somewhat sorting out his issues with Bella, he had come back to finally kill the tension that he held with the huntress. It had been a lot of unnecessary stress on them both, being on the outs with one another wasn't the biggest thing that they had to worry about right now.
Letting a small laugh escape her pink lips, Haven watched the boy intently and she could almost feel the nervousness radiating off of him, "Jake, I'm not that mad anymore. Seriously, you don't need to stress."
The thing was Jacob felt like he had too, he was essentially the root cause to their tiff earlier and he knew what he wanted to say, it was just a lot harder to let the words escape than he thought it would be. The teen considered himself a rather confident person, usually being able to talk easily with others without a stumble, but around Haven it was like he was always nervous. She made him feel that way, his legs like jelly around the girl who radiated beauty and strength wherever she went.
"I'm sorry, okay? And please let me say this without interrupting, I know how much you like people to hear what you have to say." Jacob said, his voice laced with a mixture of nerves and slight playfulness during his comment.
Haven couldn't disagree - she did have a big mouth and it meant that a lot of the time she did actually try to put in her two cents when they weren't needed. Nodding her head, the girl leaned back in her chair and waited for the boy to continue.
Jacob let out a deep breath before speaking up, his eyes trained on Haven's which were a relatively similar color to his own, "This whole thing - the relationship, the imprint, you - it's all so new. I have only ever had to care for my family, it's kind of a foreign concept that someone outside of them means so much to me. I know that I'm over protective, and trust me I would change it if I could but it's you, Haven. Every time I know you're in a dangerous situation, my heart runs a mile a minute and doesn't come back down until I know that you're safe."
Haven's full attention was on the werewolf towering in front of her, his tall stature was something that some would find intimidating but the brunette felt the opposite; she felt comfort and sheltered. The feeling that Jacob was trying to describe had occurred to Haven before as well, the intense worry that came with being connected to someone for the rest of your life. The huntress didn't start to speak, although she kind of wanted to, instead she simply held out one of her manicured hands and reached for him. Jacob instantly intertwined their fingers, his tan skin contrasting against her lighter complexion.
In their hands interlocking, Jacob had been drawn closer to the brunette and was now so close that his voice didn't have to be as loud as he was previously. The connection of their skin gave the boy a boost of confidence as he continued to talk, "I have no right to intrude on your life; telling you how to live it, what danger to put yourself in or even who you hang out with. I promise from now on that I will try to not get involved, if you want to hang out with the Cullen's then that's your choice. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop protecting you, because who knows what I would do with myself if you were gone."
Standing up from the chair, Haven rose and tilted her head to meet the boy's gaze. She felt herself having to plant her feet to the ground, her heart and mind fluttering at the words from Jacob. Her hands immediately wrapped around his neck, Jacob's larger hands splaying across her lower back. The two - although they hadn't held each other in a while - fitted together as they usually did, like a puzzle that was simply meant to be.
"You know, you can't protect me from everything." Haven murmured, her fingers playing with the little hairs that grew at the nape of his neck.
Jacob sighed, "I know, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try."
The two instantly let their lips connect, even though they had only been fighting for a day they both had still missed each other's touch so much - in fact Haven couldn't escape that she felt complete now, she hadn't noticed it in his absence but now it was like she felt whole again.
Lips touching, fingers gripping one another tightly to try and get as close as possible, their different sized bodies were flushed so that there was specifically no room between them. Jacob found himself smiling into the kiss, feeling Haven giggle lightly against his slightly chapped lips. Pulling back, his hands came up to cup the girl's slightly pink tinged cheeks, "Am I forgiven then?"
Haven laughed, the two in such close proximity that instantly put her at ease, "Definitely, I never knew you were so deep by the way. Did you really mean all that? About feeling that way around me?"
No longer embarrassed as to how he was feeling inside, Jacob nodded his brown hair covered head, "Yeah, I just need to learn how to keep my eyes on you without interfering. Could be quite a mission, you seem to always get yourself into sticky situations."
Haven shoved his shoulder playfully, scoffing although she knew it was true. Her life definitely wasn't safe, especially when she was trying desperately to take care of herself and all of her loved ones around her.
"Thank you for understanding, just because we are in each other's love lives doesn't mean we aren't our own people. We make our own decisions. Also I will try to be a bit more sensitive around the whole vampire hang-out topic, I know how you think you are supposed to feel around them and I never want you to be pressured into change your mind." After saying this, Haven grasped her grip tighter on the boy's neck and bought his lips to hers quickly, even the small kiss setting an immediate fire igniting inside her.
Jacob smiled gleefully at her, admiring her brown eyes that held flecks of a lighter hazel that he loved seeing light up whenever the girl got excited, "Thank god that is solved, do you know how much I have missed you? Fighting with your girlfriend is harder than I thought."
"Girlfriend, huh?"
Upon Haven saying this, Jacob hadn't even realized that the two had never used the term before. He kind of just presumed, considering how the two were inseparable and she was the only one that he ever wanted to be with.
Not entirely ignoring her question, but going down a track that might help in an explanation, Jacob encircled his buff arms around the girl's smaller, thinner frame. The now regular heat of his body temperature instantly warming Haven's colder skin, "Do you know what your name means?"
Brows furrowing, Haven could barely think of much as she was easily distracted by the firm grip of Jacob's arm around her waist. Her voice managed to drawl out, "My parents always say it means like a shelter or something."
Jacob kept his eyes on her, taking in the exquisite beauty of the girl in his arms - her heart shaped face, the way her jaw was particularly angular, her delicate, porcelain skin and the dimples indented on her cheeks that showed whenever she smiled - and couldn't believe how lucky he was. Haven wasn't just beautiful on the outside, it was her personality and her heart that made her truly beautiful.
"It also means a safe place, kind of like a home," Jacob rubbed his thumbs on the side of her waist, "which is pretty fitting considering whenever you are around, I feel secure and safe - it feels like I'm home. So yeah, I guess girlfriend is an easier way of saying that - if you want the title that is"
Haven's face erupted in a grin, her heart literally felt like it was going to flutter out of her chest at that comment. With the smile on her face, the brunette immediately met her lips to his, both of the teens craving one another's touch as they had already grown to be so comfortable in each other's presence.
"I guess that means we DTRed." Haven joked once the two had broken apart, although technically this wasn't true as their foreheads were still placed together and bodies still so close that no space was seen between.
"I have no clue what that means." Jacob mumbled, deep eyes still fixated on the huntress as he could feel her smooth breaths coming onto his face as the two were so close in proximity.
"C'mon, Jake. You are so uncool, why am I even dating you again?" Haven smirked, laughter flowing out of both of their mouths, they had both quickly realized how easy it was between them again - both wishing that it could stay that way forever.
---
"You never told me Jake imprinted on you." Bella asked, her fingers fumbling her house keys as she tried to unlock the front door.
Haven stood behind her, rocking a little on her heels as she impatiently waited to get out of the bitterly cold wind that was blowing across her face, "It never came up, to be honest I didn't even think that you knew what it meant." Haven wasn't even sure when Bella had been told this - presumably it was when her and Jacob had a talk about their issues while Haven talked with Emily.
"Jake just told me before, it seems like serious stuff."
Finally getting the keys in the door, Bella pushed it open and Haven followed her inside. It was here that Edward was going to come pick up the keys to his beloved vehicle that the huntress had been driving - it was going to be hard for the brunette to let the cold keys drop out of her grasp, she had quickly fallen in love with the sleek Volvo.
"Hello Haven, didn't expect to see you here." Charlie announced, his body coming out from around the corner which lead to the Swan's living room. The man had presumed his daughter would be out with Edward - that's all she seemed to do these days.
Haven nodded towards the man, "Yeah, Bella, Jake and I were just hanging out."
Bella's father smiled gleefully, knowing that perhaps his daughter wasn't losing touch with all of her old friends. That made him happy, he knew that Haven and Jacob were good people - he couldn't say the same about Edward Cullen.
A knock sounded on the door the two girls had just entered from, both immediately knowing who was standing and waiting for them outside. Charlie seemed to sense it too and rolled his eyes before retreating back to his couch, Bella assumed he was watching some kind of sports game.
Bella opened the door to reveal Edward standing there, a desperate and nervous look in his eyes that were usually a golden topaz but had since started to blacken. Haven immediately knew that it meant he hadn't fed in a while, but his whole body also seemed rather tense.
"Do you have any idea how worried I have been?" Edward quickly said, looking between both of the brunette's in front of him.
Haven watched as Bella and Edward stared at one another, the vampire clearly checking to see if any damage had been done to his mate. Rolling her eyes at the boy, Haven spoke in a mocking tone, "You worry too much, seriously. She's fine, I'm fine and most importantly, your car is fine," Haven reached out her hand and dangled the silver keys in front of the bronze headed vampire, "although I might have to steal the Volvo, I have grown rather attached to it in our short few hours together."
Drawing the attention away from the tension, Edward scoffed at the huntress and nabbed his keys from her hands, "Never again, Haven. That was the one and only time you get the cha-"
The vampire stopped mid sentence, his face which had taken on a more casual expression since Haven had eased the tension, suddenly turned confused. Haven and Bella both watched him closely, his nose twitching up at a scent that was lingering inside the Swan household.
"Something's wrong." he stated, stepping foot immediately into the house making both Bella and Haven back up, confused as to what he was talking about.
Bella shrugged, "We have just been with Jacob, maybe that's it?"
Edward swiftly made his way up the stairs, ignoring the comment altogether as he let his senses tell him where he needed to go. Bella's room.
Looking at her best friend, Haven simply rose her shoulders before the two followed the path of the boy. He seemed to be serious about this, it didn't bid well with Haven, making her feel nervous as to what it could be that had Edward so worked up.
Once up the stairs, they watched as the vampire took extra fascination in the dream catcher on the frame of Bella's bed. Haven could see by the stance of him and the rigidness of his back that something was truly bothering him, that something was truly up.
"Edward, what's wrong?" Bella pleaded from Haven's side, the two standing in the doorway as if to not get in the way of the boy.
He turned his body and his dark eyes focused on the two, "Someone's been in here."
---
Haven twiddled her thumbs, her deep wood colored eyes flitting around the room as she was still not used to the beautiful architecture and style of the house she was sat in. If you asked the girl not too long ago whether she would have been comfortable in a roomful of vampires, Haven's immediate answer would have been no, but in this moment it felt right to be here. Like she was doing something to help.
Jasper and Emmett stalked into the room then, having just been outside following the trail of the intruder that had entered Bella's house earlier.
On the way over, Edward had disclosed that it was a definite vampire smell, he just couldn't recognize it at all - which only seemed to make the already furious vampire angrier.
Sitting on the side of Alice, Haven had gripped her cold hand when they had sat down, with the instant thought of a vampire being hellbent on potentially hurting her best friend the huntress definitely needed a bit of support. Bella was seated on the other side of the pixie looking vampire, Alice was acting as a medium between the two.
"Who was it? Someone we know?" Carlisle stood, watching his son intently as it was obvious he was in agony over this, the thought of Bella being taken from him hitting too close to home. The older man was using a soothing tone - one that Haven could easily see made him seem more father-like, even to her and she was in no way looking for a new father - that seemed to calm Edward down slightly.
The bronze haired boy shook his head, "It was a stranger, I didn't recognize the scent."
"A nomad passing through?" Esme inquired, thinking the thoughts that instantly came into her head.
"A nomad passing through wouldn't have left Bella's father alive." Rosalie stated, her eyes never leaving the wooden floor of her living room.
"The scent disappears about five miles south of Bella's house." Jasper says, Haven noticing for the first time the southern drawl he has to his words. It was in that moment - no matter how relevant to the situation at hand - that the huntress realized how little time she had spent with the coven, and yet she seemed to trust them rather a lot.
Rubbing her slim hand over her face, Haven let out a huge breath at the new problem seeming to form. It appeared to the girl that everywhere you turned in Forks there was a new supernatural problem rising, Bella seeming to come front and center of it all. Haven would do jut about anything to have a few weeks off on a tropical island, with the sun soaking into her skin and cocktails on hand.
"Someone's orchestrating this." Carlisle came to the conclusion, all of the people in his living room seemingly on edge.
Speaking up for the first time since her arrival, Bella questioned, "Victoria?"
Alice shook her head, her grip unknowingly getting a little tighter on Haven's hand, "No, I would have seen her decide."
"It has to be the Volturi." Edward states, eyes focused on the wall in his line of vision like it was keeping him from letting loose on his actions.
At the mention of the coven who were keeping their eyes on Haven and the actions she was taking out, the huntress tensed slightly, "They would be after me before Bella. I'm seemingly the one they want their grips on."
A squeeze of reassurance let Haven know that Alice had sense her immediate discomfort, the vampire gave a quick look over the brunette to her right before once again setting the record straight, "I don't think it's the Volturi either, I've been watching Aro's decisions too. For both Haven and Bella."
For people that she was supposedly supposed to be at war with, eradicating any sign of their species from existence, the Cullen's seemed to care a lot about the huntress' well-being, making Haven question what her father was even talking about every time he said that they were monsters.
Not seeing an end to the many possibilities of who could have been the intruder, Emmett simply shrugged his shoulders, "So, we'll just keep looking."
"And take turns watching Bella at her house." Carlisle added.
Rosalie's head lifted at this, a look of discontent on her beautifully featured face, "Another protection detail?"
Bella shook her head, the fine hairs draping over her face meaning she had to push some of the brown strands behind her ear, "She's right, you all can't protect me, watch my dad and search for the intruder,"
"And from Victoria." Rosalie said, darker eyes trained on the human as if she was finally making sense for once.
"And keep yourselves fed." Bella finished off, doe eyes watching her boyfriend as if she already knew that her view on the situation wouldn't make him happy.
Like predicted, the vampire instantly felt like he had to retract this thought of hers, the idea of even leaving her alone for a second at the moment sent instant feelings of nervousness through his body, "I'm not going to leave you defenseless."
"Well, I'm not going to let you starve!"
Quickly rising to her feet, Haven getting over the fear she first had when Edward mentioned the vampire intruder for the first time. She pushed it to the back of her mind and focused on the task at hand, helping the Cullen's and keeping Bella safe. This was what she wanted to do as a huntress, keep the people she loved protected, "She won't be defenseless, she's got me and I can get the wolves to help."
The room fell silent at this, all of the vampires in the room not knowing how it would go if they were to work with werewolves. The brunette watched as Edward was about to protest this, his immediate dislike to Jacob coming through but Haven cut him off swiftly.
"You don't have another choice, Edward. This is the only way it can work."
---
The teenager literally felt like she had the world on her shoulders - and it wasn't because of the heavy array of textbooks packed into her leather backpack which she ironically had strapped loosely over her shoulder.
Everything was getting hectic in the supernatural sense, Edward having only just dropped her off at her house after they began to sort out the idea of the werewolf/vampire agreement. The huntress was to approach Jacob and the other Quileutes about it tomorrow, it was already around ten at night and there was nothing more that the brunette found more appealing than sleep right now.
Making her way through the house, heading towards the stairs as the wooden floors creaked underneath her heeled boots, Haven tried to see if her parents were near by but there wasn't much sound filling her house. It was when the girl picked up on the soft hum of the TV in the living room that also her name was called, clearly her parents realized she was finally home at the same time she located them.
Poking her head through the doorway, Haven smiled at her mom and dad as they were both curled up on the plushy sofa. At the sight of their daughter, the pair swiftly perked up and the teenager wasn't sure why they were so eager for her to be home.
"What's up?" Haven inquired, still not fully committing to walking in the room as she was still praying she could make a quick escape to the world of dreams about trivial and pointless things.
Her parents shared a glance, her aging mother seemed to give her husband a bit of encouragement in the form of a subtle hand squeeze.
"We need to talk." Her father began, reaching to flick the television off as the program they were barely watching before was no interest to the conversation.
"What about?" There were many things that Haven knew the line of conversation could go to, anything from her involvement with the Cullen's and even her werewolf boyfriend were things she hadn't disclosed to her parents yet. Ever since the fact they kept her family heritage and the supernatural a secret from her for so long had quite dramatically dented the trust that Haven put in the two, she wishes that she as able to easily trust them again but it seemed that the brunette needed more time.
"The Volturi, I think you need to hear the whole story about how we are involved with them."
