vii. the birthday from hell
Immediate panic set in when Haven first opened her eyes.
The room was dark, cobblestones paving the sides of the wall. Haven could barely breathe, noticing quickly that the air was thick and stuffy, plus there was a rough fabric constricting her mouth as a gag. Wriggling her arms, she quickly noticed they were restrained along with her legs, all her limbs being attached with a thick rope that began to dig into her skin as she desperately moved to free herself.
It was no use though, whoever tied the rope hadn't been nice about it. Everything about the situation started to flood back into Haven's mind; the Volturi, her parents being restrained and the kidnapping. This only made her more desperate to escape, the huntress tried to scream to alert someone but the fabric restricted the sound making it barely audible.
Nothing was more frustrating to Haven at that point, she was unable to move, save her parents or even have a chance in defending herself. Add on the fact that she was beyond scared of what was going on, as well as confused, and you had down right emotional turmoil. Haven gritted her teeth, tears flooding out of her eyes due to the pain and frustration of her situation.
It was almost in the blink of an eye that a figure appeared to stand in front of Haven, the darkness fading out the majority of his being but it didn't stop the red eyes blaring bright through the cover of darkness, "No need to be frightened, you're safe here."
Not for a second did Haven believe that, her whole body stiffened as the man's face came into view. With a snide smile plastered on his face, red eyes beaming down at the girl who held so much potential and who he planned to practically own by the end of her stay here. Haven watched, leaning away as much as she possibly could but to no avail, as the man's porcelain hand reached to her mouth and yanked the confining peace of fabric away.
If he was worried for people to hear the girl's shrieks of terror, he didn't show it as Haven let out a blood curdling scream in both fear and frustration. Haven could feel herself begin to tremble, the man's eyes coming to level down to hers tauntingly.
"Haven, we have so much we need to show you and there is so much you need to learn. Your parents are safe and I will take them to you now, as long as your quiet. Do you think you can do that?"
Haven's initial reaction would be to cave away from the man, ignoring every word he spoke as he stood there powerfully, dark hair falling down his back and all black suit attire sitting on his slender frame. But it was the mention of her parents that made the huntress instantly intrigued with what the man was offering. She knew it was risky, these people had captured her and her family from their home, but the only thing that could make Haven feel like she could actually take on these guys right now was the prospect of seeing her parents.
The brunette found herself soundlessly nodding, teeth biting her tongue so that nothing came out to spoil her chances of being let out of the restraints that felt as if they were burning her skin with each movement she made.
A gleeful smile appeared on the man's face, his body speeding around to untie the rope securing Haven before his hands gripped her wrists forcefully. The huntress wasn't taken back by his vampire speed, it kind of scared her how that had become a normalcy in her life.
With his ice cold hands never letting go of her wrists, Haven took tentative steps to where the vampire was leading her. They passed many artistic sculptures, paintings and decor once they had made it out of the dark room in which Haven had been kept, the sunlight through the windows almost felt like it would blind the huntress and she couldn't help but wonder how long she had been passed out for.
Haven had barely noticed she wasn't focusing on what was going on around her until her body had come to a halt. Looking up immediately, the feeling of coldness gripping her hands was removed and the vampire backed up a few steps. Right in her line of vision stood her two parents, both standing incredibly close to one another.
In her relief from seeing her parents, Haven started to barrel towards them when a hand gripped her shoulder instantly keeping her in place. She was getting sick and tired of people manhandling her, especially when she knew there was no point in doing any harm to these people, not after what her father had told her, "Get your hands off me." Haven spat out, her shoulder trying to wiggle out of the strong grip. All she could think about was getting to her parents, making sure they are okay and this would also give her some type of security from the fear filling her entire body.
"Alec, loosen your grip a little. We aren't trying to make her hate us, she belongs here." The man, whom had retrieved Haven from her room, spoke. His cunning grin was still plastered on his sickly white face.
A small grumble could be heard in her ear before Haven could vividly feel the hand on her shoulder loosen. Now it was simply resting there, waiting for her to make the first move in defiance so it could tighten again.
Haven looked over to the boy, whom was named Alec, a scoff coming out of her mouth as she noticed it was the person who had restrained her in his home, "I just want to go over to my parents, okay? I'm not planning on running away."
"You say that as if you would have a chance against any of us." Alec spoke easily, red eyes bearing into the brunette's wooden colored ones.
"Now, now. Lets be civil, there is something we need to give Haven." The man spoke, Haven presumed he had to have some kind of authority over Alec as the young looking vampire seemed to be at his every beck and call.
Chris Eldridge looked on from his spot about ten meters away from his daughter, instant regret filling him at not being able to keep her from all of this. He knew what was going to happen, but he didn't know how it could be stopped.
The dark haired vampire pulled out a syringe from his robe pocket, silver liquid glistened in the tube, "I'm Aro and trust me when I say that all of us here are excited for your arrival."
Haven watched cautiously, her brown eyes trailing on the syringe, she had no inkling of thought towards what it contained. The only thing she did know was it didn't look good, and she knew for sure it was her that it would be plunged into, "Arrival? You mean when you kidnapped me."
In less than a second Aro was standing before the girl, Haven felt Alec's grip tighten on her shoulder as she instinctively tried to inch away. She didn't trust anyone here, and with that potential weapon in his hand Haven knew that it only meant bad things for her.
"Aro, are you sure about this? Remember you can't undo it, are you positive that she is the one you want?" Chris spoke, the only way he could save his daughter from what was to come was to try and reason with the vampire making the decision. The retired hunter had served the Volturi well, he just hoped that would count for something in Aro listening to him, that maybe he could help change his daughter's future so it wouldn't be as damaged as his was.
The leader of the Volturi paused at the man's words, red eyes glancing down at the huntress before him. He knew what he wanted, and this was the perfect way to ensure it, "I trust your opinion, Chris but I also know how much potential your daughter has. Marcus, Caius and I have talked it over, she is the one we want."
With the way her father talked, Haven knew that whatever was about to happen wasn't good. It was the desperation coating his voice, the fact he was trying to convince Aro from going through with whatever he was planning.
"Please don't," Haven uttered quietly, knowing that the vampires could hear exactly what she was saying.
An ice cold hand brushed a few knotted strands of hair out of Haven's eyes, "I forgot to say, happy birthday, young one."
Everything quickly made sense to Haven in that moment. In the protection of Bella, the looming threat of the very people who held her captive here and everything else stacking up in her life, the brunette had completely brushed over the fact it would indeed be her eighteenth birthday if it was the day after the council meeting that she attended. It was because she was eighteen that she figured the Volturi thought it was the right time to strike, maybe this was the age they considered mature. Also her father had began to serve them when he had turned that age as well.
Haven felt the needle plunge into the side of her neck and the liquid being pushed into her bloodstream. A scream could be heard from the other side of the room, the feminine cry of her mother filling Haven's ears. It only took a few seconds for the burning to start, what felt like a fire filling the huntress' body as the liquid traveled along her veins. Whimpers began to sound in Haven's throat, the agonizing pain taking over any other sense the girl had. She felt herself fall to her knees, her bones hitting the cool marble floor.
"You'll be fine in a few hours, your kind have a quick recovery time."
Nothing was registering to Haven anymore, the burning radiating to every inch of her body. A scream curdled out of her mouth, cries of pain being the only thing that could express the gripping sensation that had made its way into her bloodstream.
Haven had never been more thankful to pass out, the pain beginning to be too much for her body as her brain shut off, the pain easing as everything around the girl faded.

"How much longer should she be out for?"
Haven's eyes tried to pull open, the girl not understanding why they were resisting her in that moment. Her body felt weird, like she had been placed in another one that wasn't her own. She didn't feel like herself.
"She should wake up any minute now," Haven recognized her father's voice, her mother being the one who had spoken just before.
Chris and Casey watched their daughter, knowing that so much had changed in the space of a few hours. They both knew nothing could be done about it, it was inevitable that this would happen at some point. They both couldn't help but wonder whether their little girl would be able to handle the truth, whether she would still be able to stand up to the centuries old vampires.
At that point, Haven forced her soft eyes to open. With a little struggle, she finally began to see where she was. She could feel the softness of a mattress underneath her slim body, the light on top of the ceiling nearly blinded her with its yellow glare. Two heads suddenly appeared in her line of vision, her two parents faces filled with relief at the sight of their daughter being awake.
"What happened?" Haven lowly grumbled out, her voice hoarse from the screams she had let out earlier. Her brows furrowed, looking at her parents and surroundings. It was like everything was in zoom, she could see the slight indents all over her father's face that she never could before, her mother's pores being visible along with the tiny hairs coating her hairline. The paint strokes of the soft grey room stood out, spots on the wall with specks of dust could be seen with Haven's eyes, "What is happening to me?" Her voice mumbled, eyes flickering all around the room confusingly as small things began to stand out to the girl.
"Aro injected you with his venom."
The huntress did a double take, having to fully wrap around what her mother had just simply said, "He did what?"
Her father's hand came to gently stroke her sweat covered hair, her hunter blood fighting off the venom making her perspire more than usual. Chris knew exactly what the girl was going through, the exact same thing happening to him when he was her age, "You're not a vampire, hunters can't be turned but it gives you some vampire powers. Aro does it to make his desired hunter stronger, faster and quicker to react."
Haven realized quickly that was why her eyesight was better, she had just been given some of the better aspects of vampirism. Her hand came to grip her father's arm, the man instantly letting out a grunt at the force the girl was using, not blaming her however as everything was new to her at this point. The huntress let out a quick apology, instantly letting go knowing that she had no clue what she was capable of.
"So, I have vampire speed now?" Haven asked warily, her brown irises still fluttering around the room as she began to take in everything.
"And their strength, agility and hardiness." Her mother added on solemnly.
Knowing that her family was in the grips of the Volturi, Haven couldn't help but think this might be a good thing. It gave her more of an advantage, a better chance at escaping.
It was almost as if Chris knew exactly what was filtering through his daughters mind as he spoke, "But it also means that you are connected to Aro. You can feel what one another feels and talk to each other in your minds. It makes you more susceptible to staying with him, you will feel like you have to be with him and the rest of his coven."
Haven didn't know how to feel now, knowing that the sick bastard who was single-handedly ruining her life was now connected to her. She voiced the first thought that came to her mind, "How do I stop it?"
She was met with silence, both of her parents averting their eyes to any place possible to avoid answering the question knowing that Haven wasn't going to be happy with the answer she was going to get.
"I said, how do I stop it?" Haven spoke louder, not prepared for how quickly her body came to sit up. The speed of which she could now make her body move scaring the brunette slightly.
Casey looked up, their similarly colored eyes meeting, "We don't know if you can, not here anyway."
Chris nodded in agreement, knowing that he had to ride out the time that the venom lingered in this veins. It took ten years for his to wear off, Aro topping him up again as soon as he was back to his regular anatomy.
A sudden whoosh of eagerness filled Haven, the emotion coming from almost nowhere. She knew instantly who was feeling that way. She didn't know how, but Haven could also swear she knew that the vampire was close, she presumed it was another downfall to the venom that had unknowingly been placed in her bloodstream, "I can feel him coming closer, Aro's nearly here."
Right after the words left the brunette's mouth, the gold painted door swung open. Aro's black robe billowed down near his ankles, sickly pale skin glistening to Haven's newly adapted eyes.
You ready for training, young one?
Haven's eyes snapped immediately to his red ones, his smooth voice filling her head. A menacing grin came over his features, knowing that the girl was going to play right into the palm of his hand, especially when this was all so new to her.
In that moment, Haven had no clue how she was going to get herself out of this one.
