x. never the same
"What the hell is going on?"
Haven finally worked up the nerve to ask the question that was on her mind. It was only a few minutes ago that her father had seemingly risen from the dead and she knew it was going to take a lot longer to fully regain her thoughts on what had happened. It also had been a few minutes since the brunette had ran into her father's arms, relishing the feeling of being in the presence of someone that she never thought she would see again.
She felt elated, like everything had come full circle. Of course there was parts of her that had to think about the consequences and repercussions of what was to come. Aro was dead set on killing her father, that was the only reason he let her and her mother go after all. Haven wondered what this meant for her, would she have to go back there when they find out that Chris Eldridge never really died?
"You may want to sit down." Chris pointed to the bed that Carlisle and Esme had moved off of to give the Eldridge family space, knowing that explaining had to be done. Haven moved to sit down, while Casey continued to grip onto her husband's side, refusing to let go of the one person whom she thought was gone from her life forever.
All of the other people in the room stood to the side. They were all in the know of everything that had gone down and were all aware of the moment the family had to have. Even Jacob didn't move from his spot against the wall, Quil and Embry to both of his sides, even though he desperately wanted to be touching his girlfriend who so easily could have been torn away from him. Seeing her was enough though, even if she did look like a haunted and terrified version of the huntress, she was alive and here.
"We all knew the Volturi were coming for you, that much was obvious. It obviously was going to be when they decided they wanted to turn up, but I think they may have forgotten that I worked for them for a long time. I know the way they work, I know the way Aro thinks. With your birthday eighteenth birthday approaching I knew that was around the time they would come, so I went to Carlisle.
"I couldn't let you stay there forever. There was no way in hell that I would force you to endure what did when I was with the Volturi; I killed people, innocent people and creatures who didn't deserve it but Aro seemed to disagree. He does everything for power and I refused to let you be another thing he added to his list. But I knew that I couldn't hide you forever, he was going to find you and that only meant I had to prevent him from keeping you.
"It took a while to work up the courage to see Carlisle, it's not his fault that I have ill feelings towards his kind but as much as I have grown up knowing they're evil, I knew that they would do anything to help you. So I explained it to him that we were all going to be taken and what Aro planned to do when he had you in his hands. He told me he would do anything for you, so that's when I asked him to inject me with his venom."
Haven watched her father cautiously, taking in all his words. She quickly turned her head to where Carlisle was standing next to Esme, the blond vampire nodding his head to show that this was in fact the cold, hard truth. Chris Eldridge was connected to Carlisle Cullen the way that Haven was to Aro.
"How did that help anything?" Haven asked tentatively, letting out a long breath that had been building up. This all seemed like a hallucination, a dream even. The brunette was sure that at some point it was all going to fade away beneath her and she would wake up in her lilac quilted bed.
Chris kept his hand wound around his wife's shoulder but everyone in the room could see it tense slightly. Carlisle watched on, knowing the emotions turning around in the man's mind, and intentionally sent a wave of calm through the newly acquainted bond. He hoped that his feelings would pass over to the hunter's, gaining him a sight of calmness so he could continue explaining the situation to his family whom had a right to know.
"It helped because none of the Volturi knew that I had the vampire abilities, including the one that means I can only truly die by either hunting weapons or fire. When I offered to exchange myself in order for your freedom, which I knew Aro would have to uphold considering it is the only loophole to get out of being with them, I knew that they would only kill me as if I was a hunter. They weren't going to waste resources and effort to kill me, so all Jane did was snap my neck and we all know that is no way to kill a vampire. Especially considering they let Edward take my body straight after."
Casey spoke up, her voice wavering slightly, "So, you were only acting dead?"
"No, I was knocked out until I was on my way here. Since I have the vampire abilities it means that breathing isn't necessary for a while, the rate of oxygen coming in and out of the body isn't large. For the most part, I technically was kind of dead," said Chris, his blue eyes resting on his daughter's slim form on the bed.
Haven didn't know why but all she could feel in that moment was anger. Surges of it radiated through her body as her mind picked up on the littlest, most selfish things to to be mad about. The fact that her dad made her start to mourn him, how he hadn't trusted her enough to let her in on the plan, the fact that she still went through endless pain and torture at the hands of Aro while he simply stood and watched. The one main point of her anger being that her father got to be connected and bonded with someone so caring, Carlisle could never do harm to anyone and having access to his feelings sounded like a dream to the girl who was stuck being connected to a malicious, evil vampire who did everything for power.
Somewhere deep inside Haven, she knew that it wasn't right to be this angry. She didn't know what was rolling through her, but she had an idea in the back of her head that it wasn't all her feelings. Haven was pretty sure that Aro didn't know about her father surviving, he had no reason to be suspicious but he was more trying to remind Haven that he had power over her - that no matter where she was that he could still put his feelings on to her.
With the feeling of anger consuming her, Haven jumped up from the bed abruptly. Her movements were so fast that barely anyone saw her moving, the vampire speed meaning in the blink of an eye she had her father locked against the wall, her arm coming to rest against his throat to block him from moving, "How could you? What about me, huh? I'm connected to Aro, could you have not stopped that in your massive superhero move!"
Everyone in the room took a while to act, even Chris himself was surprised at the sudden burst of anger that was so unlike his daughter that he barely even comprehended pushing her away. Emmett seemed to be the person who recognized the threat the quickest, Jacob not far behind him. His porcelain hands easily gripped the huntress, pulling her off her father as she continued to thrash her limbs around. Emmett's grasp didn't falter on her however, not until he had successfully passed her over to Jacob in hopes that he would be the only one able to calm down the clearly frazzled and overwhelmed girl.
"Hey," Jacob had his tan arms secured around Haven's middle, grip locked so that no amount of moving and struggling she was doing could break it. He had no idea what was happening, what was going on with his girlfriend but he knew it had something to do with the Volturi and that thought alone instantly made Jacob want to be the one thrashing in anger, "Listen to me. That's your dad, you're here with all of us. You're fine, just breathe. It's going to be okay, we will fix everything but you need to calm down."
Haven didn't know if it was the strong grip that Jacob had on her or if it was the soft tone of his voice rasping against her ear, but something about the situation brought her back and made her aware of everything around her. Her mind reeled at what she had just done, not sure why it even happened. Haven felt herself losing control right when she was sure that it was going to be the most important thing to her.
It was in that realization that she looked up at her dad, tears pooling in her dark eyes, "What's happening to me?"
Her voice came out in a soft whisper, but everyone in the room heard. No one knew what to do, what to say. Along with the others, Jacob couldn't formulate words so he did the only thing that he knew he could give her in that moment and gently placed a kiss to the side of her neck. It wasn't lustful, it was caring to show that no matter what was going to happen with her, that he would be there.
"It's the connection, it can get overwhelming if you don't know how to handle it. Especially with Aro on the other end, it's going to take time for you to fully understand how it works and how to get rid of any of his input." Chris said, his blue eyes watching his daughter regretfully as he could see a mountain of pain and strife on her shoulders.
Carlisle took a small step forward, "I can work on a way to get rid of the bond, but I don't know how long it will take. This is a completely new thing for me - for all of us - to deal with."
"You're not alone, Haven." Bella spoke up from her spot next to Edward, her doe eyes, resting on her best friend, filled with tears. She could see the turmoil, she knew the huntress too well and everything she was feeling was evident on her face. In no way did Bella understand, in fact she had trouble comprehending at all what was going on with the brunette but words were all she could offer.
Jacob's hands - which had let go of his girlfriend when she had stopped going on whatever rampage she was on - came to rest lightly on her waist from where he stood behind her, "You've got us, we can help."
Haven found herself nodding, fingers coming to brush by her eyes that were watering but hadn't quite let the tears fall. As much as she was grateful for her friends and family's help, that didn't stop how she was feeling. Everything had shattered in a few days, even though she was feeling grateful that her father was alive and well it didn't take over from her feelings of darkness.
"I think we should all just go home." Casey interjected, hating being in the country that had brought so much suffering for her family.
Chris flinched at those words, knowing that there was one more thing he had to tell his family, "I-I can't come home."
Haven wished that she wasn't expecting it, but she knew it had to happen. The Volturi, even though they weren't going to jump into action and take her again, would still be watching the family's every move. He had to go into hiding, it was the most logical and responsible thing to do - even though it was something that made Haven's heart wrench at the thought.
"Carlisle found me a place that they won't know, I'm going to stay there until we figure out how we can work around this." Chris said before Haven had quickly ran to embrace him, the tears from earlier flowing down her red tinted cheeks. Casey joined the two, all squeezing each other with what could be there last hug in a while.
Her father was alive, Haven was grateful for that but she also knew that phone calls and Skype sessions wouldn't suffice. The Volturi had ruined everything; crumbled her world in a matter of days.
Usually the girl had a solution to all her problems, or one of her parents did. But Haven didn't know how the Eldridge's were going to overcome the biggest problem they have ever faced; the Volturi.
