xiv. let the battle commence

Silence hung over the woods.

It wasn't a desired silence however, it was one that was lingering and shot a current of nerves down Haven's spine. She kept her daggers in both hands, gripping on to them like her life depended on it - which it kind of did.

She was standing beside Rosalie Cullen, the rest of the vampire family right beside them as they awaited the attack from the newborn army hellbent on attacking Bella Swan - who was now safely away in the mountains with Edward and Seth Clearwater. Casey Eldridge had positioned herself in a tree not far from where her daughter was standing, crossbow in hand so that she was directly away from the vampires, considering she didn't have the power of one like Haven did, but still in firing range where she could assist the Cullen's and the wolves - who were waiting in the shadows, planning on making a surprising entrance to the unknowing group of misfits.

"They really like to keep us waiting, don't they?" Haven muttered under her breath, nervously twirling her daggers in both hands. She had chosen to go with hand on hand combat with the newborns, mainly because her body felt drawn to being in the action. As much as Haven loved her bow, she had vampire abilities now and it was about time she started to utilize them.

Rosalie bit back a laugh from beside the huntress. "I don't think they're really on a tight schedule, nor do they care about how long we wait for their arrival."

Haven wished they were on a tight schedule - it would give the brunette less time to let the nerves and anxiety claw away inside her. She hoped that she had finally got on top of her difficulties with her connection with Aro, she only wished that Jacob was by her side right now so she didn't forget.

It was then that a rustle could be heard coming from the depths of the forest, a few pounding footsteps on the mushy soil.

The newborns were coming and Haven was more than ready to ruthlessly get rid of every one that entered her path.

They were threatening her best friend, but that wasn't the only issue she had. Vampires were the cause of her turmoil, the cause of her father having to hide away until a better plan was thought of and the cause of her conflicting emotions. She was more than ready to let loose on some, a piece of herself couldn't help but be vengeful for everything that had happened. It wasn't fair to blame all vampires - but it was fair to let her anger out on a bunch of them planning on killing Bella Swan.

"Everyone ready for this?" Jasper spoke, he was centered in the middle of the defensive line they had made up. "Remember everything I told you and don't hold back."

Haven turned to where her mother was standing in the tree, crouching in a stance that only a woman who had been working in this field for many years would know. The brunette caught her mom's gaze, a small nod directed her way to make sure she was ready to help from the shadows.

It only took around ten seconds for the steps to get louder, the vampires coming less carefully and faster than before. It was obvious they were ready to rampage, but so was every single person standing in the meadow - along with the wolves situated behind the rocks and trees.

"Game on," Haven muttered under her breath as dozens of pale figures erupted from the trees. With this, the Cullen's and Haven launched themselves out of their battle stances into a quickly sped run just like the newborns - Haven didn't once think about anything but killing, her daggers planted firmly in her hands.

A blonde female was the first newborn Haven was met with, she didn't look like she was much older than the huntress' herself. The blonde made an instant grab for Haven's shoulders, presumably to try and rip the exposed area with her sharp teeth. It was expected though and Haven wasn't stupid. She ducked swiftly, grabbing the vampire's freezing torso and shoving her forward to catch her off guard. Haven's hand grabbed instinctively at her long locks, snapping her head backwards with such a force that it easily ripped off her body. Haven dropped the severed head in less than a second to move on.

She saw the Cullen's battling with other newborns in her peripheral vision, none of them looking like they were struggling at all. Jasper's tips had payed off. Wolves had started to litter the place as well and if Haven had time she would have tried to spot Jacob's familiar form, but there was no need to distract herself.

From beside her, a male newborn tried to blind sight her from the side and would have made an impression if it wasn't for the sleek arrow that lodged itself into the side of his skull, making him drop to the ground instantly. Haven didn't have enough time to thank her mother, but the woman didn't need the recognition, this was her job as much as it was Haven's.

The brunette kept running toward a group of three that had tried to trap Alice in a circle. Haven easily grabbed the males leg from behind, yanking it so the vampire lay flat on his stomach in shock. Her hand plunged the dagger into his back before he fell limp. Haven used her newly given strength to rip his two arms off anyway - for safety measures. Alice had managed to find her way around the other two, using her nimble body to work her way through them both.

It wasn't hard to come across the newborns, they were spread around the meadow just like the flowers were on the ground. Victoria hadn't been playing around with how many she recruited - it was a bloodbath.

Haven easily gripped one newborn trying to run past her, pulling the girl tight against her chest with the dark girl's arms to her back. She used all her force to kick her body forward and like a rag doll, the vampire flew right into a werewolf's mouth - the big black wolf being none other than Sam Uley. His canines easily tore her in half, Haven had to get moving before she could see the end.

Two had tag teamed Haven now, trying to back her into the big boulder in the center of the meadow. Haven wasn't ready for them, but adjusted quickly. Her elbow collided with one of their faces, pushing the vampire off to the side for a few seconds. Her dagger flew out of her hand, lodging itself right through the heart of the small girl - she fell to the ground instantly as the venom plated blades poisoned her blood.

The male that Haven had pushed before came back, a snide smile on his face at killing something, anything. Before Haven had to use her dagger, a russet colored wolf moved from behind the massive rock to easily grasp the man's torso in his mouth, shaking its head to rattle the vampire before the mangled body fell from the wolf's mouth. It was Jacob, Haven didn't have to look twice to know it. One look at him and the huntress was reminded of what was keeping her calm; how she felt about him and how much stronger she felt with him being near her.

The two didn't spend long gazing before they sped off, the huntress swiftly wriggling her dagger out of the newborn's body. As Haven looked around she quickly noticed that the newborns had dwindled in size by a lot. As she moved around the meadow with her speed, she slashed and impaled around five vampires that were giving her trouble. None of them stood a chance against her venomous daggers.

Without even realizing, Haven had ended up shoulder to shoulder with Emmett. The burly man had just stopped decapitating a vampire twice his size and looked at the shorter girl beside him, seeing the blood dripping off her daggers came as a delight to him.

A strangled howl came from only a few yards in front of them, two vampires were holding down a wolf that didn't look like it was in the best shape. Without even thinking, Emmett grasped Haven's hips and looked down at the girl. "You ready to show them what you're made of, Daggers?"

Haven caught on pretty fast, keeping her daggers latched in her grips. "Get me over there."

Emmett's muscular arms easily launched Haven towards where both vampires were getting ready to plunge their teeth into the wolf's fur. The huntress swore that she recognized the werewolf as Quil, although she wasn't sure. The brunette felt herself fly through the air, Emmett had tossed her body like it was nothing and that was exactly how it felt to close in on the newborns.

She landed easily on her two feet behind one of the vampires, the auburn haired girl had her back to Haven and it was obvious she had no clue of her presence. Haven used the surprise factor to her advantage, quickly stabbing both her daggers into the girl's gut at once from both sides. Her daggers were in and out fast, but the damage was visibly done as the vampire slunk down to the ground in a heap.

The male vampire was fuming at this point, a growl emitting from his mouth at the sight of his mate getting sliced open with knives. He was lunging at Haven in a blink of an eye, his body weight tipping over hers so that he was laying over her on the ground. His mouth was seconds away from ripping out her throat when Haven spotted a figure standing behind the vampire. She smirked slightly, pushing the male's body upwards to where Emmett grasped the black shirt he was wearing.

Emmett's grip was strong on the man as he squirmed to be let go, eyes still bearing into Haven as he thought about the many ways he could kill her. The huntress didn't give it a second thought once Emmett smirked her way. The burly vampire twisted the victim so that his back was to Haven and she easily climbed onto his shoulders. With the flick of her hands, his neck broke. The brunette then stood up on his shoulders and stretched to dislodge his head from his now corpse.

"You know how the other day I said we should spar?" Emmett said, easily breaking the arms of the man just in case anything else was to happen.

Haven nodded once she was back on stable ground.

"I take it back, you're pretty feisty. I don't ever want to be on your bad side."

Haven laughed at the vampire and looked around to see that there weren't any newborns left - everyone else was either just finishing with their victims or making sure everyone was actually dead. It looked like Jasper and Carlisle were beginning to start a fire to really finish this battle off.

They had won.

Haven instantly latched onto Emmett in a hug, completely forgetting that she had the strength of a newborn in that moment. Not only had they won, but Haven hadn't gone wild and tried to kill the people that were on her team. Nothing meant more to her than that.

"Hate to kill the moment because I like this fun side of you," Emmett groaned in pain. "But, you are kind of killing me right now."

Instantly Haven retracted, an apology instantly flowing out of her mouth. The pair of them started to help in gathering the bodies to put in the fire that had started up and Haven kept admiring every time she went to grab a limb and there was an arrow lodged into it. Her mother was a bad ass, at least Haven knew where she got it from.

Alice was standing still beside the fire, Jasper was by her side in a second at noticing what was happening to her. The blank look had taken over her face and everyone knew what that meant.

"What is it, Alice?" Carlisle asked his daughter, everyone including Haven flocking around the petite vampire.

She hesitated, eyeing Haven slightly before her voice came out in a hushed whisper rather than its feminine chime. "The Volturi are on their way. They will be here in a few minutes."

Haven's stomach sunk. She was just coming off the adrenaline of battle to a new low, where her captors were going to be back in her life - right before her eyes. The brunette wished that Jacob was by her side then, although she knew that the wolves were off to the side together as they debriefed and assessed the damage of what they had done.

"How long?" It was Edward's voice that came across the clearing, Bella rapidly walking by his side to keep up with his long strides. Clearly his mind reading had worked and that was how he knew it was safe to come back.

Haven didn't care about that as she sped over to meet her best friend halfway, instantly pulling Bella's body into hers in a hug that nearly squeezed the life out of the human - although the brunette was trying to be gentle. "You okay?"

"Yeah, you? It seems you guys ripped up some serious carnage here," Bella replied, her voice muffled in the crook of Haven's shoulder. The brunette assessed the work that had been done and was grateful she wasn't anywhere near this place.

"All in a days work." Haven unraveled herself from Bella only to thread her fingers through hers, needing something to anchor her to the ground right now or otherwise she felt like she would fly off into a state of anger that wouldn't benefit anyone.

Luckily for the huntress, Casey Eldridge was by her side in an instant, wrapping an arm around her shoulder so that her daughter was leaning against her lean body. The three females walked up to the edge of the fire together, ready for the Volturi mess that was about to come.

"In around ten minutes," Alice finally answered Edward once everyone was ready, not wanting to repeat herself twice.

"The pack needs to leave," Carlisle spoke up referencing where the werewolves were standing as a pack at the edge of the forest. "The Volturi won't honor a truce with the werewolves."

"It can't be Aro," Haven interrupted. "I would be able to tell, I don't feel a pull anywhere in me like I usually do when he's around."

No one had a chance to comment on Haven's presumption as there was a commotion going on behind them. Haven turned, along with everyone else, at the sound of an aggressive growl echoing throughout the vast space of clear land they had just battled a vampire army on.

Leah's distinct white wolf form was in the arms of a straggling newborn, the vampire having the obvious upper hand in a fight that the only female wolf wasn't going to win.

"Leah, don't!" Edward was the first to make an audible dispute on the issue, everyone standing still as this was all happening in what seemed like milliseconds.

As soon as Haven saw the familiar dark toned fur of Jacob, she got a sick feeling in her stomach. Jacob sprinted over to the where Leah was, his mouth latching onto the newborn as they tumbled down together.

Haven started to run, unhooking a dagger from her weapon belt at the sight of her boyfriend being in danger.

She wasn't fast enough though, the vampire held Jacob against his chest and crushed his arms onto the wolf's bones. Everyone heard the audible crack, but what shook Haven the most was the yelp of agony that she swore she could feel the pain of. Her body ached, like she was the one who had bones broken when in reality it was the person that meant the most to her.

Without even thinking, Haven's dagger flew from her hand and lodged perfectly into vampire's forehead, right in the middle of his eyes. Jacob was loosely let out of his grip as the newborn fell to the floor, the rest of the pack catching the body of the vampire and ripping him to shreds.

Haven felt like it took her two hours to get to where Jacob had transformed back into his human form and when she did get there, it was worse than before. His face scrunched up in pain made Haven's eyes tear up, she desperately wanted to cling her arms around herself as she swore she could feel pain radiating through her. If it wasn't for the look of anguish on her mate's face, she would be right up with the wolves as they tore that newborn to shreds.

Carlisle was by Jacob's head already, assessing the damage done to him and how he could try and fix it. Edward was there as well, trying to do what he could. Haven heard footsteps in her ear, Bella didn't have the speed advantage everyone else did.

Haven didn't say a word, her fingers tracing his face lightly. She couldn't lose him, that would break her and she didn't know how she would be after that. Through everything that had happened to her, Jacob had always been her anchor and if he was gone, then everything would unravel in Haven's mind.

"All the bones on his right side are shattered," Carlisle muttered, his eyes still focusing on the damage caused.

"Haven," Jacob's shaky voice managed to squeeze out, his eyes locking onto her dark ones as she attached her other hand, that wasn't on his face, in his.

"Hey," Haven didn't want to cry - she felt like she cried too much already in her daily life - but the sight of him in pain made her feel like her heart had completely shattered. It didn't help that she was ready to do all she could for the boy and yet, not a thing could be done. "I'm right here, you're going to be okay. Don't worry."

The rest of the pack had transformed back to their human shapes, all coming around the boulder in a desperate run. "Jacob, you idiot! I had it!"

"Leah!" Sam was by Haven's side in a second, his eyes darting around the familiar faces so that someone would give him an answer on whether his beta was okay.

Carlisle was the first to talk. "I need to reset his bones before the accelerated healing kicks in. It's already starting."

"We need to get him out of here, we're not going to win a fight with the Volturi."

"Screw the Volturi," Haven found herself replying to Edward with menace filling her tone. "I don't care about them. I care about whether my boyfriend lives or dies. If that means staying here and breaking his bones while they watch, then do it. I would like to see them try and get past me."

"As much as I agree with you, Haven," Sam started off acknowledging the girl beside him, not even knowing the amount of pain and torture she was going through alongside Jacob right now. "I don't have an interest in fighting any more vampires today. We'll take him back to Billy's."

Carlisle looked at the Alpha gratefully. "I'll be there as soon as I can."

"I'm going with them," Haven insisted, not wanting to even be a centimeter away from Jacob in that moment.

Edward was the first person to disagree with the huntress, although everyone else in hearing distance was thinking it. "You know you have to stay here, Haven. The Volturi are going to want to see you, and they'll get suspicious if you aren't here with us."

The thing was, Haven knew this before Edward even started talking, but that didn't change the fact that she wanted to be by her boyfriend's side. Her stomach felt hollow at leaving him when he needed her the most, in a time where he would be able to stay with her if the situations were reversed.

Haven reluctantly lent down and pressed a kiss to the side of Jacob's forehead, feeling the sweat beading off him. "I'll be with you in a sec, okay? I love you and you'll be okay, I won't have it any other way."

She watched as the rest of the pack solemnly picked up his injured body delicately, banding together so that they could do it in a way that would hurt him the least amount possible. Sam turned to the brunette quickly and said, "We'll take care of him."

If it had been anyone else, Haven would have shrugged them off. But this was the leader of Jacob's pack, and if she couldn't be there then she knew it was best that her boyfriend was with his father and pack - the two other things that meant the most to him.

It was Bella who was the first to acknowledge Haven still on the ground as the wolves were picking up Jacob, both Edward and Carlisle had quickly sped off to be beside the fire pit as the Volturi were closing in.

"He's going to be okay, we will get you there as soon as possible."

Haven nodded at Bella's words, trying to blink away the tears she didn't want to fall. She had to be strong; for Jacob, for herself and for the group of tyrant vampires about to visit her. Haven needed to be as strong as everyone always insisted she was.

"They're coming!" Alice's voice was urging both Bella and Haven to make their way over swiftly.

Haven grasped Bella's hand in her own and was ready to speed over to where her mother and the Cullen's stood side by side.

The Volturi were coming, and Haven was really not in the mood for their shit.
