xv. a world of pain

Haven was getting really sick of red hoods.

The Volturi had been in her life too often and Haven swore she could feel when they were near, that's when you know that you need a break from them. Haven would gladly have had one considering the leader of them was making her crazy and the group made her father go into hiding because they thought he was dead. But apparently, they just can't get enough of her and the Cullen's. Plus, they had an obsession with Bella's immortality.

Haven stood beside her mom, their hands gripped together in unity. The Cullen's were all behind them slightly besides Carlisle, since he was trusted to do all the delegating.

It was only four members that emerged from the woods; Jane, Alec, Demetri and Felix.

Haven was just entirely grateful it wasn't Aro and his annoyingly condescending voice.

They all shrugged off their hoods and stared at the fire blaring beside the Cullen's, tons of dismembered body parts sticking out from the golden flames. Haven swore that she could see Alec scowling in her direction - which probably had a lot to do with the fact the last time they were face to face was when Haven held his head next to a sword threatening to behead him. She wanted to laugh suddenly at the memory.

"Impressive," Jane spoke up, referencing the battle that they had just conveniently missed. "I've never seen a coven escape an assault of this magnitude intact."

"We were lucky," Carlisle replied, keeping an even tone about his voice.

"Or maybe we are just a lot better than you give us credit for," Haven said her peace instantly, without a waver in her voice. She kept her gaze locked with Jane as the blonde smirked in her direction.

"I see you consider yourself a Cullen then," Jane's face pulled into a grin of ease and amusement. "Interesting. It's good to see you though, Haven. Aro will be interested to know that you are benefiting from his powers, and that you are doing well."

There was a great pause before Alec let out a delighted chuckle. "It seems we missed an entertaining fight."

"I can show you another one if you want," Haven muttered before she felt the presence of someone looming behind her. It was Emmett, the buffer boy having brought Rosalie with him so that she was still by his side, while ready to grasp Haven if need be so she didn't start a war with the most powerful coven in the world. Haven simply rolled her eyes at the boy's movement - although she couldn't blame him considering the anchor to her emotions was off in an amount of pain that could be life threatening.

Jane's delicate features pulled down so that her face looked indifferent. "Yes, it isn't often that we are rendered unnecessary."

"If you'd arrived a half hour ago you would have fulfilled your purpose," Edward sassed back, speaking freakishly what was going through Haven's mind.

"Pity," Jane spoke without a smidgen of sorrow. Her face did elate with joy around a second later though, as she spotted something she liked the look of from behind the Cullen's main line of vampires. "Looks like you missed one."

Haven turned to look at the same time, having not even realized that there was a very young looking vampire standing near Jasper. In all that had happened, the brunette didn't notice that there was one left. The Cullen's were oddly protecting her though, and she didn't seem to be making a play at killing Bella so Haven didn't know what her endgame was. With her short stature and long, dark locks she looked as harmless as they come - aside from the beady red eyes that Haven felt looked into her soul every time they moved her way.

Every one of the Cullen's stiffened at the mention of the newborn. Carlisle was the first to speak up, "We offered her asylum in return for her surrender."

"That wasn't yours to offer," Jane replied almost instantly, looking like she was excited about actually having a purpose here in this meadow.

"Well you weren't the one that had to fight off the rest of the newborns, so why do you get a say in who lives and dies?" Haven was surprised at the words of menace that came out of her mother's mouth. Casey Eldridge was never one to talk badly, but the woman was flaring up at the prospect of a young innocent facing death because of a situation out of her control.

Jane ignored the woman however, simply choosing to speak to the extremely young looking newborn. "Why did you come?"

The blonde vampire didn't even give her a chance to answer the question before she was making pain erupt through every fiber of her body. The young girl screamed, dropping to the floor in pure agony as her whole body lit up in a fire that she desperately wanted put out.

Emmett had to grab Haven then, the huntress ready to make a dash for Jane who was causing such pain on someone. Rosalie also had to keep a hold of Casey, who was in the same boat as her daughter. The Eldridge duo found common ground on this issue - the young vampire had no say in what she was and what she was forced to become. They could both relate as hunter's didn't have a choice either, they were what they were and the pair didn't think that deserved punishment.

The Cullen's, however, had dealt with Jane and the Volturi a lot longer than the huntress' have. They knew nothing could be done, so they could only watch on as pain radiated through the innocent newborn.

"Who created you?" Jane continued to ask questions as the vampire let out more screams that Haven felt pierced her through the heart. So much had happened tonight that had effect on the brunette's heart and Haven thought at this point it was well in truly broken.

"You don't need to do that. She'll tell you anything you want to know." Esme, always the compassionate one, was the first to break the silence, the pain of Bree's screams being too much for her to handle.

The screaming stopped suddenly, as did the pain. Jane's face tilted in a knowing look. "I know."

The young girl let out a groan of pain before coughing out an answer. "I don't know! Riley wouldn't tell us, he said our thoughts weren't safe."

"Her name was Victoria," Edward interrupted, his voice fill of anger and pure hatred as he spoke the words to the Volturi messengers. "Perhaps you knew her."

"Edward," Carlisle countered in an indifferent voice, although everyone knew he was having the same opinions as everyone else; that it was too coincidental for the Volturi to turn up only minutes after the fight had blown over. "If the Volturi had knowledge about Victoria, they would have stopped her. Isn't that right, Jane?"

Jane looked almost offended that the question was even asked. "Of course."

Haven had heard enough from the blonde and was ready to shove a venomous dagger in her mouth so that nothing else could come out of it. "That's a load of bull. Everyone here knows that but no one wants to say it because they're too scared. You are all a bunch of frauds and murderers who hide behind your numbers and abilities. Someone is going to beat you one day, and when they do it's going to be the best day of my life. In fact, I'll be leading the group. Tell that to Aro."

There was no reaction given from anyone, none of the Volturi members even flinching at the words spoken by Haven. "I wouldn't be so quick to call us the frauds and liars when we know very well you have been doing the same, Haven and Casey. Tell your father that we say hi and that we will be coming for him later, he is still our payment, remember? Just because he didn't die the first time, doesn't mean he will outlast the second."

Haven went numb at that point. They knew her father was still alive.

It was naive of her to even think that the Volturi wouldn't find out, of course they would. They knew everything that went on in the world, especially when it involves them. No amount of great hiding places and sneaking around could have concealed this from them, and Haven was going to make damn sure that her father didn't get killed - even if it meant her own life in exchange.

With Jane's words having shut both of the huntress' up, the pair even falling limp in both Rosalie and Emmett's arms in defeat, the blonde vampire turned to the wall looking one behind her. "Felix."

Everyone knew what she was meaning for Felix to do, and it wasn't going to end well for the young newborn.

As the intimidatingly tall vampire began to stalk forward in their direction, Esme cried out desperately, "She didn't know what she was doing!" Jane held a cape covered arm out to make Felix stop in his step, interested to hear what she was going to say. "We'll take responsibility for her."

"Give her a chance," Carlisle pleaded - which wasn't something he did often.

There wasn't even a look of thought on Jane's face, she had already made up her mind and no amount of begging or screaming could change that. "The Volturi don't give second chances." Her blood red irises flickered over to where Haven stood, the huntress knew it wasn't an accidental look - but a message.

"Keep that in mind," Jane had turned to look at both Bella and Edward now. "Caius will be interested to know that she's still human."

"The date is set."

As Bella spoke, Haven saw Edward flinch at the mention. There was so much struggle in his face, it was clear this was anything but his choice and the brunette felt for him - she wouldn't wish her life on anyone, especially not her best friend.

"Take care of that, Felix. I'd like to go home."

Jane's words were left in the cool air, while Felix stomped forward to get past the Cullen's. No one made a break for attack, because they knew they weren't going to win this. Even Haven, as stubborn and determined as they come didn't move in Emmett's arms. The Volturi already knew about her father being alive and the brunette knew when to pick her battles - this wasn't one.

It was obvious that everyone objected to the treatment of the younger girl, but no one made a move. Haven felt Emmett squeeze her body tighter - but not to restrain Haven since she hadn't made a move since Jane's words about her father. It was Emmett that needed the sense of holding back this time, the big vampire restraining himself by using his arms to do something other than rip Felix apart. Haven let him do this, especially for all the times he had been the one to hold her back - it was nice to return the favor.

Haven clenched her eyes shut as bone snapped and screams strangled out into the meadow for the second time that night - another reason for Haven to feel pain in her soul.

Carlisle had given Haven strict instructions to drop her mother home before coming over to Billy's, specifically because the vampire didn't think she would be able to handle seeing Jacob in splitting pain again as he broke his bones so they could mend.

Haven didn't object and did as she was asked, which meant that when she pulled up in the familiar La Push driveway she was even more anxious. Her slim body almost tumbled out of the door of her BMW. Seeing the majority of the pack standing outside the house with glum faces wasn't what she wanted to see.

When the brunette had made her way over to the house - feeling like she was blind in the way she had no clue what was happening around her - it seemed like she didn't stay away long enough because a scream rippled through the small house, sending not only a chill down Haven's spine but also a sick feeling in her stomach that made her want to puke.

Billy clenched his eyes shut in his wheelchair, Sue gripping his shoulder to relief any tension she could. The look on his face was what Haven assumed hers looked like; grief stricken, in agony and pain.

"It's been going on like this for a while." It was Quil who spoke first, no one else knew what to say. They were feeling broken themselves but they had no clue what Haven was feeling - they were Jacob's pack, but she was his soulmate. They didn't know what condolences they had to offer. "Doc had to re-break all his bones."

"Why did he have to jump in? I had it-"

"Give it a rest, Leah," Paul burst from his silence to speak loudly like he always did, except this was different - he wasn't enthusiastically loud, he was angrily loud.

Haven didn't know what prompted her to speak, but she was pretty sure it was the look of guilt on Leah's face as Jacob continued to scream at the pain he was in. She had seen that emotion too many times when she looked in the mirror. "Leah, it's not your fault."

The female wolf looked at Haven almost surprised. She figured the brunette would need someone to blame for what happened to her boyfriend, and it wasn't like Leah didn't already blame herself anyway.

"There was nothing you could have done to stop him, we all know he has always been determined to save everyone. This time was no different." Haven watched Leah carefully, hoping that the girl truly understood that she didn't need to be riddled with guilt. Jacob had always felt a need to protect everyone, it just seemed today that he went too far.

In talking to Leah, Haven hadn't realized that the screaming had stopped and Carlisle had walked out of the front door - with Sam on his heels. "The worst is over, he'll be alright."

Haven had already known in her heart that he would be okay, she didn't think she would be standing on two feet if he wasn't. There were somethings you just knew. This however didn't stop the pain the girl was going through at knowing Jacob was in agony.

Billy sent a longing look Haven's way, the brunette smiling at him gratefully. She knew he had heard the worst of his son's pain, and Haven didn't know how he did it. She supposed that was where Jacob got his strength from, and not just the physical side.

"I gave him some morphine but his body temperature will burn it off soon. I'll come back to set up a drip." Carlisle looked pained as he spoke, he had always been a compassionate man and Haven realized then that it didn't matter what type of creature Jacob was, Carlisle wanted to help either way.

"Thank you," Billy said gratefully, knowing that his son could be dead without the help of the vampire. He held out his hand for Carlisle to take, which he did, and Haven felt like it was a continued step into the alliance between the wolves and vampires - at least she hoped.

Carlisle faced Haven as he turned to leave. "He's asking for you."

Haven felt the cold hand of the vampire on her shoulder as he walked past her. She was nervous and it was slightly worrying, she had no clue what she was going to walk into. Being outside the house meant that she was close to him, but didn't have to see Jacob in such a state where it would cause her too much pain. Haven was afraid that walking in there would make this real, that her boyfriend nearly died tonight and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

The huntress looked around the wolf pack, seeing their faces slightly more upbeat than before but still pained at what had happened tonight. Haven's gaze came to rest on Billy and she didn't know if she was the right person to be in there first - Jacob was Billy's son after all. "Don't you want to go in?"

"He needs you more than he needs me right now." Billy's voice was adamant, he knew what the young wolf would need and it wasn't the comfort he could offer his son.

Haven hesitated again before she walked up to the front door of Jacob's house. Her stomach was tumbling with nerves, the brunette hadn't felt like this before - not even when she was scared in battle or anxious to fight. This was a whole new ball game of feelings, she was terrified of how she might find Jacob in there.

She walked in slowly, the familiar hallways of the boy's home offered a small bit of comfort. Haven stepped tentatively around the corner, pushing the door open to Jacob's room slowly as if it meant that she wouldn't have to see what was behind it.

Haven tried not to flinch at seeing him lying there, sweat making his face glisten underneath the window and arms bandaged in slings to keep their place. Her heart hurt, she could see his teeth gritting in pain and in that moment she knew she would do anything to stop this from happening again.

"Jake," Haven began, walking over to where his body was laying nearly motionless on his bed. Her knees came down to the ground, lowering herself so that she was level with him. A tentative hand came to rest on his face, her thumb smoothing over the skin of his cheek.

"You're okay," Jacob stated, his voice croaky presumably from the screams he had been letting out earlier.

Haven's eyes nearly popped out of her head. "I'm okay?" She asked in disbelief, her mouth would have fallen open in shock if she hadn't been voicing her thoughts. "You nearly died and you're making sure I'm okay?"

Jacob wanted to laugh, although he knew moving a lot wouldn't help him at all right now. "I always need to make sure you're okay."

"I'm fine, so is Bella. And Leah, since you jumped in to save her life - which we will be having a talk about once you are feeling better since I have told you so many times that saving everyone else shouldn't come before saving yourself." Haven tried not to lecture the boy, but she couldn't help it. He was so close to being gone from her life, and the brunette would be damned if she ever let it come that close again.

"I would get my bones broken again and again if it meant that the people I loved were safe," Jacob's eyes were starting to close, the mixture of morphine and exhaustion kicking in. "Especially you."

"You won't ever have to go through that again, okay? I won't let you." Haven saw that Jacob wasn't going to be conscious for much longer, and she knew that the best thing to do right now was to let the boy sleep off everything that had happened. She dreaded when he woke up because she knew then that she would have to explain all the Volturi business that went on tonight.

"Thanks for coming to see me," Jacob's eyes fluttered shut right after he spoke, his words barely being audible but Haven didn't have trouble hearing, her heightened vampire senses doing what they were made to do.

Haven moved from where she was kneeling on the floor, her lips moving to place a delicate kiss on the teenager's forehead. "I love you, I'll always be here when you need me."

It didn't matter that Jacob wouldn't have heard the last part, what mattered was that Haven had said it and meant it. Nothing else would happen on this scale to her boyfriend if she had anything to do with it.

As she moved out of Jacob's room, a drop of moisture dripped on to the sleeve of her leather jacket. Haven hadn't realized that a tear had escaped her eye in being grateful that her boyfriend was still alive and breathing.

It was a close call today and Haven knew that it wouldn't always end that way.
