xvii. goodbye

"Talk to me please."

Haven pleaded with Jacob, who was standing in front of her in the Black household. She watched how his face crinkled in anger, he was clearly trying hard not to do something he would regret.

"I can't," Jacob uttered out between clenched teeth, his eyes not daring to look up at his girlfriend.

Haven had just told the boy about her new connection with Edward and this reaction was to be expected. She knew deep down that she most definitely should have told Jacob before she even went through with the bond, but there was simple reason why she chose not to.

Haven knew that he wouldn't want her too, and that simply wasn't an option to her.

"Isn't the saying it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission?" Haven eased out gently, trying to somehow lighten the mood that had gotten too angst ridden for her to handle.

It was then that Jacob looked up at the girl, his eyes darker than Haven had ever seen them before. She instantly saw the hurt in them, something that had been hiding down in the depths for a while and was finally coming up to the surface. Haven's heart felt like it dropped to the floor in seconds.

Jacob's hand twisted into a fist. "Why didn't you tell me?"

That was the million dollar question after all, and it was the very question that Haven didn't want to answer. She didn't want to push this conflict further, she knew very well that nothing good would come out of speaking her mind. "Because it was something I needed to decide for myself."

"That's not what I asked," Jacob's voice held a tone of betrayal, his words stumbling out of his mouth without the usual amount of confidence. "Why didn't you tell me, Haven?"

"I didn't want you to change my decision," Haven admitted, her eyes locked with his. "I knew that you would have an extremely strong opinion on me getting connected to Edward. You hate him, Jake. Not just mildly dislike, you actually would kill him if you had the chance. This was going to happen whether you knew or not, I just figured the latter saved you from worrying."

Jacob's face slackened before he began to pace in front of the dining table in his home. He seemed to be calculating something in his head, pondering a comment that Haven made and she had no clue what part it was.

The tension was so thick in the room that Haven swore she would begin to choke if someone didn't speak up. It was doing her head in, but the girl also knew when to pick her battles and she already knew that she was technically at fault for this. Haven didn't exactly have the ground to get angry, but she knew Jacob did.

"Let me get this straight," Jacob's voice was harsh against the piled silence that had stacked up. "You didn't tell me you were doing something that could have almost killed you because you didn't think I would support you?"

It sounded a lot worse when it was put that simply.

Haven didn't know how to come back at that. She wanted to be honest, it was what the werewolf deserved and she owed it to him really. "Aro's control on me was easily the worst thing I have ever experienced, and I have watched you and my father – two of the people that mean the most to me – almost die right in front of me. I had to get rid of the connection, Jake, and this was the only way."

"I know that was a terrible thing for you and I one-hundred-percent wanted you to get out of the bond with Aro," Jacob looked genuinely hurt at the accusation placed on him. His blood almost stared boiling at the thought of Haven thinking he would rather have her in immense pain than be connected to someone he didn't like. "It wouldn't even be a question for me to be there for you, Edward or not. I always want what's best for you. Vampire drama comes second to you – in fact everything comes second to you, Haven."

Haven's heart pulsated at the words he spoke, then her brain instantly wanted to punish herself for even having the inclination to believe that Jacob wouldn't want her to get rid of her connection with Aro. It was almost idiotic of her to think so. She knew what she meant to Jacob because she felt the same pull to him within herself. He would have been skeptical of course, but in the end they were always each other's number one. Always.

The huntress instinctively moved forward to Jacob, what stung the most however was how his body did the exact opposite and retracted backwards. Her lips pulled down in a frown.

"I'm still mad," Jacob moved his eyes away from the girl he loved as he knew just one simple look in her direction would have him running back to her in a hot second. "You don't trust me."

"What?" Haven looked at the boy like he had grown a second head. "Of course I do. I don't think anyone has ever trusted a person as much as I trust you."

The werewolf shook his head, which was already telling him to move closer to the huntress. The imprint bond had him good and he detested that it tried to always bring them together – even when his feelings told him to back away as quickly as possible. "You clearly don't, otherwise you would have told me before you drained yourself of blood."

"I love you," Haven stated bluntly. "But you can't blame me for being scared about saying something. You hate the Cullen's."

"Not enough to compromise your happiness and what you want. I would ha-"

"Sorry to interrupt," A voice came from behind the two teenagers and it was one that both of them easily recognized.

Billy Black had wheeled himself into the living room, despite hearing the argument between his son and his imprintee from his own bedroom. He nervously fiddled with the envelope in his hand. The older man had no clue if now was the appropriate time, but then again he didn't know if there would ever be an appropriate time to show this to his son.

"What, Dad?" Jacob's focus had left the argument he had been previously having with his girlfriend to see what had his father's voice so timid. He was almost afraid.

Billy didn't say anything more, he simply handed the envelope to his son. A grim look was placed on his face, he knew that it was Jacob's business to know but he wasn't sure what the werewolf would do once he read the invitation.

It only took the teenage boy around one minute to process what was written on the beautifully decorated, white card. Haven had worked out what i was as soon as she saw the artistic calligraphy of Jacob's name inscribed on the envelope.

It was Edward and Bella's wedding invitation.

"Wedding?" Jacob looked at his father in confusion, to which Billy only shrugged his shoulders. The teenager's eyes then focused on Haven, who he could read like a book and he noticed she didn't display the same amount of uncertainty he felt.

He let out what seemed like an attempt at a laugh, but Haven only heard more pain in his struggled breath. "You already knew. Of course you did."

"Jake, I was going to tell you af-"

"Don't worry, it's fine. I guess I have to get used to you only telling me certain things now." Jacob moved past Haven, barely giving her a second look. He was angry, so so angry that he needed to be anywhere but here. He felt like he was losing to the Cullen's, not only did they have his best friend in the palm of their hand but it seemed as if Haven was right there beside them.

"Jacob," Billy tried to reason with the boy, moving alongside Haven as they watched him walk right to the door.

He didn't look back though. It didn't matter that it was pouring rain outside, Jacob easily stormed his way out of the house. The invitation fell out of his hand and onto the gravel driveway piling with puddles of water.

Haven looked at Billy beside her and she was positive he was about to yell out to his son again. The huntress pressed her hand into the man's shoulder comfortingly. "Just let him go. He has to cool off."

That was when the change ripped through Jacob and he was in his wolf form in seconds. That gave him a faster opportunity to make his way into the forest. He didn't care that all his pack members could now feel his hurt and that they could see right in the depths of his biggest insecurities.

He didn't care that they now knew why he was acting the way he did. He was losing everyone he cared about slowly; he lost his mother to a car accident, his sisters had all but ditched him and the reservation as soon as they graduated high school, he had lost his best friend to his mortal enemies and now his girlfriend, his soulmate, was following in that same path.

And that hurt.

"He'll come back," Billy reassured the huntress beside him, his rough hand coming up to rest on her dainty one.

Haven watched where Jacob's retreating wolf form had made its exit, the forest looking like a place where she would escape too if so much was piled on her shoulders. "I hope you're right."

And she truly did hope this as she couldn't help but think that all of this was her fault. Jacob had left, which was already stinging her heart, and it was all because she didn't talk to him.

Maybe he was right. Maybe Haven didn't trust Jacob as much as she thought she did.
