Chapter Five
~Lucifer's POV~
After dinner, I offered Lorelei a tour of the mansion so she could find her way around. It was her home now too, I wanted her to be comfortable. I wanted her to feel at home, but I wasn't sure if that was possible. Perhaps it was selfish of me to want that, it would certainly alleviate some of my guilt if she could be happy here, but I didn't deserve that.
"Lucifer?" Her gentle voice shook me from my self deprecating thoughts.
"Moving along." I beamed and made a move to put my hand on the small of her back. I quickly pulled my hand away not wanting to scare her and motioned her onward. Her lips, now a deep blood red, pressed into a thin line as she watched me closely. Once she stepped through the door I followed along behind her ushering her to the next room, "here's the kitchen." I pushed open the door.
An audible gasp escaped her and she practically skipped into the kitchen, "it's huge!" She looked around in wonder, "so much counter space. My entire apartment could fit in here three times over." I'd almost forgotten how much she loved to cook.
"It's yours to use whenever you like. If you need any supplies or ingredients just let me know, I'll make sure they're here." I smiled morosely as a dark thought crossed my mind. This was nothing more than a cage, a pretty cage with lots of pretty things but a cage nonetheless. And sweet innocent Lore was my prisoner.
Lore stopped her spinning, a grimace crossing her face. She reached up and gently touched something I couldn't see. I felt the tug of the divine tether linking us. Her gaze flicked in my direction filled with heartbreak she didn't seem to understand. The tether was poisoning her with all my self loathing. I tried to shake away the thoughts, but they just kept piling up threatening to topple me.
Lore looked thoughtful, "...it's a little unfair that you seem to know all my favorite foods and I don't know any of yours." She offered me a somber smile.
"...I like caramel apples..."
Lore smiled and laced her fingers together behind her back, "I just so happen to know a great recipe for caramel apple cinnamon rolls."
I'd stumbled upon her baking in the looking glass, she was an explosion in the kitchen but everything I'd seen her create looked wonderful. It felt wrong to ask her for anything, but they sounded like something I needed to try.
Lore looked around the kitchen peeking in drawers and cupboards on the hunt for something, "why is there no junk drawer with a notepad?" She grumbled to herself as she continued her search.
I pointed to the counter next to her and an apple shaped notepad with a red pen adorned with a golden apple appeared out of thin air. She was starting to get used to me using my powers and didn't jump this time. She scribbled down a list of ingredients she'd need.
"If I have those, I can make them." Her grey eyes held the tiniest bit of mischief. She was helping me avoid asking her to make them. She could probably sense my crippling guilt through the tether.
The list tore itself off the pad and flew to me. I tucked it into my breast pocket, "you'll have them."
"What's next?" Lore smiled and skipped past me.
"How about the library?" I smiled.
Lore turned to me with wide eyes, "why didn't we start with that?!"
I chuckled softly, happy to see her acting like her usual self. My hand reached toward her automatically as I whisked her toward the library. I didn't draw back this time and gently pressed my hand to the small of her back to steer her. She didn't shy away like I had expected. An endearing blush spread across her cheeks.
We stopped at another ornate pair of double doors. I gently pushed them open and Lore let out a squeal of delight as she stepped into the three story room. Every wall save for the wall of windows was floor to ceiling books on all three floors. There were two spiral staircases on either side of the room leading to the upper floors. On the main floor the room was filled with various plush chairs and in the center of the room was an ornate marble fireplace.
"Can I request a room change?" Lore asked breathlessly as she scanned the various shelves.
"I don't think that would be very comfortable, but you can spend as much time here as you like."
"Have you read all of these?" She asked in amazement.
"Nearly."
"There's no way, it would have to take thousands of yea-." Her voice trailed off and I felt a flicker of fear through the tether.
"Only a few hundred." I smirked, trying to get her smile back.
"How much time do I have?" She asked, uncertain. I'd thought that flicker of fear before was because she'd forgotten who I was and what it meant. I should have known better, Lorelei was kind to a fault. She was worried that her lifespan in hell would be similar to her lifespan as a human and scared that she'd cursed me.
"Eternity." I smiled.
She looked a little relieved at this but I could sense she was feeling overwhelmed.
"It's getting late, why don't we save the rest of the tour for later." I offered her my hand, unsure if she'd take it or not.
Her small hand slipped in mine after a moment's hesitation.
I led her back to her room, pausing at the door next to it, "my room is here, if you need anything."
She threw me a curious look, I sensed some of the anxiousness she'd been clinging to start to alleviate a little as I walked her to her door.
I reluctantly released her hand from my hold and turned to head to my room, "goodnight, Lore."
"...Lucifer?" Her soft voice gave me pause.
I turned to her curiously as I felt fear begin to creep up the tether. "What is it?"
She bit her lip and avoided looking at me. I could see her fighting with herself over whether to speak her mind or not, "...could I have a nightlight?" Her hands were shaking.
"As many as you want." I gently pushed open her door and the room was filled to the brim with glowing rubber duckies.
Lore looked into the room and a soft giggle escaped her, "that may be a few too many."
I removed the piles of glowing ducks from the floor leaving only the ones scattered across the two nightstands, the vanity and the dresser. I looked to Lore for her approval.
She smiled. "Thank you."
"Goodnight, Lore."
"Goodnight, Lucifer."
