Chapter Eighteen

I woke with a start and panicked as I found myself back in my bedroom. I heard voices in the living room. What happened?! Was everyone okay? Did I hurt anyone? How did I get back home? How long was I unconscious?! Throwing back my blankets I sat upright. The room began to spin. My body protested violently and I let out a gasp of pain as my skull felt like it was splitting open. Blood dripped from my nose and I spilled out of my bed, hitting the floor with a soft 'thud'.

"Ava?!" Detective Tsukauchi's voice sounded from the living room.

The next second my bedroom door flew open and I felt my heart skip a beat as I spotted Bakugo standing in the doorway. He breathed a sigh of relief before stepping toward me.

"Kacchan?" I didn't understand what was going on. "W-what happened?"

"You tried to give yourself brain damage again." He growled as he yanked me off the floor, wrenching me to my feet before pushing me backward so I toppled back onto my mattress. The spinning intensified and I clenched my eyes tightly shut.

There was a high-pitched ringing sound in my ears and I winced as my skull felt like it was splintering. More blood dripped from my nose and I felt a little drip from my ears as well. I'd overused my quirk.

"You won the Sports Festival?" I asked shakily, opening my eyes as Detective Tsukauchi and Mr. and Mrs. Bakugo finally caught up to see if I was okay.

"Yeah." Bakugo grumbled looking somewhat bitter and not happy with the result.

"Sorry I missed it."

He handed me a tissue without a word, trying to save face. His eyes gave him away as they grew wide and looked to the alarming amount of blood spilling from my ears and nose.

"Thanks for keeping your promise, Kacchan..." I smiled as I took the tissue from him and tried to mop up the blood to the best of my ability.

A small smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, "Thanks for not holding back."

Mrs. Bakugo stepped forward and slugged her son in the back of the head with enough force he nearly fell forward. For a brief moment I thought I'd heart his brain rattle around in his skull from the force of the blow. I squeaked and scrambled out of their way. Detective Tsukauchi looked to the fighting pair then to me not sure if he should try to break up the fight or tend to me. Upon noticing the unaffected look of Mr. Bakugo, he decided on the latter and grabbed a few more tissues before dodging the quarreling pair.

He sat next to me on the bed and handed me one of the tissues indicating I should hold it to my nose before he wiped the blood from my ears. "I'm proud of you, Ava."

"But I lost control..."

"You acted like a teenager." He corrected me with a smile. "There's nothing for you to beat yourself up over. You didn't hurt anyone." He added as if he could sense the dark place my mind had wandered.

Relief flooded through me. It felt as if a great weight had been lifted, I could breathe a little easier. I slumped against him. "Thanks...Dad..."

Detective Tsukauchi smiled and wrapped his arm around me to keep me upright sensing I was ready to collapse. We both looked over to the fighting duo, they were getting more violent. I half expected things to start exploding at any moment. Perhaps we should start keeping fire extinguishers in every room of the hosue.

"Is this normal?" Detective Tsukauchi asked me quietly indicating Katsuki and his mother exchanging loud words and occasional punches.

I nodded, no longer surprised by their outbursts. Maybe that was how Mr. Bakugo remained so calm, he'd just gotten used to it as a part of everyday life.

"What the hell is your problem, damn hag?!" Katsuki snarled at his mother.

"I didn't raise you to be so disrespectful, apologize to Ava!" Mrs. Bakugo snapped.

"Huh?" I squeaked.

"For what?!" Katsuki raged.

"You're not supposed to be so violent with girls you like!" Mrs. Bakugo smacked him upside the back of the head again.

My face burned at this. I was sure if I looked in a mirror, I'd resemble a cooked lobster. What did she just say?

Katsuki's face turned an alarming shade of scarlet and he snapped his mouth shut. He seethed in a silent rage for a moment before clenching his fists.

"You don't need to apologize." I piped up meekly, "I'd have been more upset if you held back, it would have been insulting..." I averted my gaze not able to look at him as I felt like I might die of embarrassment.

Mrs. Bakugo looked from my blushing face to Katsuki's with a small smile, "Sorry for my son's deplorable behavior, Ava dear. Thank you for being a positive influence on him."

Katsuki shot her a glare before storming out of my bedroom in a huff, "Crazy woman!"

A nerve in Mrs. Bakugo's temple twitched but she kept her sweet maternal smile in place for my benefit, "Get some rest, Ava dear. Once you're feeling better, you'll have to join us for dinner again soon."

"Th-thanks Mrs. Bakugo."

The Bakugo family showed themselves out and Detective Tsukauchi chuckled softly to himself. "They're a lively bunch." He chuckled.

I nodded but regretted it as the room lurched. My body slumped into his arms and he looked down at me, worry lines creasing his forehead.

"Are you alright, Ava?"

I hesitated, "I think I just overused my quirk. I feel really dizzy." I closed my eyes to stop the room from spinning.

Detective Tsukauchi retrieved some more tissues and wiped up the blood dripping from my ears and nose. The bleeding stopped after a few minutes and he gently shifted me so that I was lying back in bed before covering me in blankets.

"Do you want to go to the hospital?"

I shook my head. Hospitals were a trigger for me now after what had happened before, when I'd woken up alone in the hospital and was attacked by the civilian who hated my parents. "I'd rather not, please..."

"Alright." He frowned, "Rest for now, if you're not feeling better when you wake up, I'll call Recovery Girl... Hospital as a last resort, okay?"

I nodded. "Thanks."

He kissed the top of my head. "You did great today, Ava."

I settled back into my comfy bed and snuggled under the warm blankets before allowing myself to sleep. I drifted in and out of consciousness for most of the afternoon. My scrambled brain kept flipping from sweet embarrassing dreams of Bakugo to twisted terrifying dreams of my parents. They were all so vivid, they felt so real.

At about midnight I woke with a start after a terrifying realistic dream of my mother. I'd dreamt that she was still alive and tormenting me from afar trying to turn me into a villain. She threatened to kill everyone I cared about, Detective Tsukauchi, Uncle All Might, Marco and the girls, Naomi and Noah, Mr. and Mrs. Yamaguchi and Bakugo. The ground rumbled faintly as I bolted upright jolting out of the terrible nightmare.

A groggy Detective Tsukauchi raced into my bedroom. "Ava? What's wrong?" he fought off a yawn and guilt wormed through me. He had to work early in the morning, I shouldn't be bothering him.

"I'm sorry..." I squeaked as I struggled to get my emotions under control. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end, I could practically hear my mother's voice in my mind. Threatening me and everyone I loved.

This seemed to wake him up. He straightened himself up and sat on the edge of my bed, pulling me in for a warm hug. "Ava, you don't have to apologize." He rubbed my back trying to comfort me.

The darkness began to ebb away as he held me in his arms. It took me a moment to compose myself and I bowed my head apologetically but didn't say anything aloud. I was making things harder on him. "I'm okay now...you can go back to bed, I didn't mean to wake you."

Detective Tsukauchi frowned at this, his quirk gave away my deceit. I wasn't fine. I was far from fine. The dream with my mother was so vivid and realistic it had me scared out of my mind. He hugged me tighter and smiled softly, "You know what sounds great right now?"

"W-what?"

"Cookie Dough and Ice cream." Detective Tsukauchi smiled.

"But, it's the middle of the night." I sniffled.

"Sounds like the perfect time." He chuckled as he got to his feet and pulled me up with him. I swayed unsteadily once upright, from the sudden change in elevation but otherwise I felt physically fine. He steadied me with a smile. "Put on a jacket and some slippers, let's go."

Before I could say anything to protest, he left my room to get his own slippers. I met him by the door still in my pajamas to see him in his plain blue pajama set with his slippers and a light jacket. He grabbed the keys to his car and ushered me out the door into the chilly night air. I couldn't help but smile, it kind of felt like we were sneaking out.

"What are we doing?" I giggled.

"Getting cookie dough and ice cream." He chuckled as he draped his arm around me and ushered me to the car before getting into the driver seat. After ten minutes of driving around the city we found an all-night cookie creamery. It was empty save for a few tired university students cramming for exams.

We both got big bowls of cookie dough, ice cream, and all the toppings before grabbing a seat away from the studying students. We looked a little silly in our pajamas and slippers eating sweets. As silly as we looked, I wouldn't trade this moment for anything in the world. The longer we ate sweets and talked about everything and nothing in particular the more relaxed I began to feel and the easier it was to forget the terrifying dreams.

"Thanks, Dad." I smiled knowing this was his plan all along to cheer me up.

Detective Tsukauchi reached over to ruffle my hair. "Anything for you, kiddo." He stifled a yawn. "How about I go get us some lids and we take the rest of this home for later?" He looked down at the over abundance of sweets we'd gotten.

"Sounds good." I giggled.

As he stepped away from the table, I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end and looked down at my arms, they were covered in goosebumps. It felt like someone was watching me. Carefully I glanced around the Cookie Dough Creamery, the university students were buried in books, the single employee was texting on his mobile. My gaze drifted to the giant storefront window and I felt my heart stop beating and a cold dread washed over me making me want to slip to the floor and hide under the sticky table. The shadowy man who claimed he was my godfather was standing outside the storefront window.

I opened my mouth to call for Detective Tsukauchi but he vanished and for a moment I wasn't sure if I had hallucinated the whole thing or if he'd really been there. Detective Tsukauchi returned with lids for our bowls of cookie dough and ice cream. He frowned as he noticed the sickly pallor to my skin and the fear in my eyes.

"Ava?"

"Sorry, I think I'm hallucinating again." I shivered.

He set the lids down and knelt in front of me taking my hands in his. "What did you see?" He asked me calmly keeping my eyes focused on him, a technique my therapist had told him about to bring me back to reality.

"The villain that attacked USJ and said he was my godfather..."

"Do you see him now?"

I shook my head.

"Where was he?"

"Outside."

Detective Tsukauchi looked behind him to the storefront window. He frowned as he realized because of who I had seen there was a possibility he could have been here but he didn't want to make me panic. His dark eyes turned back to me and his frown deepened as he realized I'd come to the same realization. "It's not entirely impossible..." He admitted and squeezed my hands as he felt them begin to tremble.

"I want them to leave me alone." I quivered.

"I know...I do too." He pulled me in for a hug. "I think it might be a good idea for you to stay with All Might tonight."

"But-."

"Please, Ava...it would make me feel better knowing you're with him. Especially while I'm at work."

I reluctantly nodded.

Detective Tsukauchi called All Might as I put the lids on the bowls of sweet treats. We got back in the car in silence after Detective Tsukauchi finished his call before driving me to Uncle All Might's house. He answered the door in his muscular form wearing what looked like an All Might footy pajama onesie with little bunny like All Might slippers on the feet.

"Good evening young Ava-chan!" He greeted me with a grin and a warm hug.

"Thanks, All Might." Detective Tsukauchi smiled, "I owe you one."

"Nonsense, it's no trouble, I'm always happy to look after young Ava-chan." All Might smiled brightly, it was too bright, and Detective Tsukauchi's smile seemed too forced. Neither of them thought it was a hallucination. They both thought I was being targeted by the villains again and they were worried.

I decided to play into their charade in hopes of keeping them from worrying and gave Detective Tsukauchi a quick hug, "Goodnight."

He kissed the top of my head affectionately, "Goodnight, Ava."

Knowing they both wanted to talk about what I'd seen, I gave All Might a quick hug, "Goodnight."

He hugged me back, "Goodnight, young Ava-chan." His smile was practically blinding.

I trudged away trying to keep a convincing smile in place and went to the spare bedroom where I stayed at whenever I was at Uncle All Might's house. I kicked off my slippers and hung my jacket on the back of the chair seated at an empty desk before picking up the remote to the TV feeling like I wasn't going to be able to fall asleep. The parental control locks were on so I couldn't change the station from a kid channel that played childish movies all day. There must be some kind of marathon going on about my parents, that was the only time Uncle All Might used the parental controls. I turned off the TV, deciding against breaking through the locks. Uncle All Might used the same password for almost everything, PlusUltra07041776 and I didn't have the heart to tell him I figured it out. He was just trying to be considerate of my feelings and didn't want me to get upset with all the stations talking about my parents and what had happened years ago.
