Chapter Four
I woke early and tidied up the house, picking up all the girls' toys and getting all of the laundry into laundry baskets before tidying up the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the girls. Marco's oldest, seven-year-old Mavis, was the first to wake and wandered into the kitchen rubbing sleep from her eyes as I set the table.
"Ava? Is Daddy home yet?" She asked me with a yawn.
"He hasn't come in yet, is something wrong?"
"He promised he'd look over my math homework."
"Oh. I could look it over, if you want." I offered her a smile.
"Okay." Mavis beamed. "Is there anything I can do to help out?" She was always my little helper when I came over. Marco had often asked me to come over and show him how to cook so he could prepare nutritious home cooked meals for his kids, since his wife had done all the cooking before. Mavis always invited herself to our lessons and was already a better cook than her father.
"You think you can get your sisters up and to the table?"
"Leave it to me!" Mavis cheered before racing off. In no time at all she had all of her younger sisters rounded up and at their respective seats at the table and helped me fill cups and sippy cups with chocolate milk.
I served the girls pancakes and fresh fruit before sitting down to look over Mavis' math homework. The girls chattered excitedly as they ate their breakfast and I marveled at how much they all looked like their parents. Every single one of them had Marco's ginger hair Mavis's was long and straight, the six-year-old twins Mara and Mora had thick curly ginger hair taking after their mother's thick curls, four-year-old Mabel's hair was thick and in a bob shape, and sixteen-month-old Marie had super short peach fuzz hair. All of the girls had their mother's pretty hazel eyes and their own unique personalities.
"Great Job Mavis they're all right." I beamed as I handed her back her math homework. She grinned with pride before scampering off to return it to her backpack.
After breakfast I got myself and the girls ready for school and Marie dressed for the day and ready for the sitter who often watched her during the day when Marco needed an extra hand. I looked to the clock on the wall, it was almost time to get the girls to the bus stop. Where was Marco?
The twins went to open the door to see if they could see the bus while I finished fixing everyone's lunches; I heard a loud thud and ran to investigate. Marco had fallen asleep against the front door! All the girls laughed and poked at him as he snored loudly on the floor. I looked down the front path to see a kind woman in her late thirties, the sitter.
"Good heavens, what happened?" She gasped as she hurried up the steps of the front porch.
"Hey, Marco-san? Are you okay?" I attempted to wake him with a gentle shake to his shoulder, but he didn't budge. Sighing I dragged him into the house and with the help of Mavis and the twins was able to get him onto the couch.
"Is Daddy going to be okay?" Mabel, the four-year-old asked as she clung to my skirt.
"From the sounds of the snoring, I think he's just exhausted, he just needs a really long nap." I reassured her. Poor guy.
The sitter took over with Marie and I took the rest of the girls to wait for their school bus at the end of their driveway. As I was distributing the girls' lunches and making sure everyone had all their school supplies and homework, I spotted movement across the street and blanched as Bakugo stepped out of his house, slamming the front door behind him. Did he just wake up angry, every day? His piercing crimson eyes flicked in my direction and narrowed into a glare. Oh great.
Just as the girls' bus pulled up I spotted a somewhat timid looking man with dark brown hair a short mustache and glasses step out of the house across the street, was that his dad? He looked so calm and relaxed, how on earth did Bakugo become so aggressive?
"Katsuki, I can give you a ride to the station."
"Shut up!" Bakugo snarled. He was even aggressive with his parents? What the hell was wrong with him?!
The school bus stopped in front of the driveway and I waved in greeting to the bus driver before the girls swarmed me with hugs.
"Thanks for having a sleepover with us, Ava!" Mavis beamed as she hugged me around the middle.
"Anytime, I love you guys." I ruffled her long ginger hair. "Have fun at school girls!" I waved farewell as they boarded the bus.
As the bus pulled away I felt my heart drop as I spotted a very irritated looking Bakugo standing on the opposite side of it, scowling at me. I yelped instinctively in response to his terrifying glare and almost ran for it but decided to stand my ground instead.
"W-what do you want?" I cursed myself as my voice cracked.
His glare only turned more menacing, "Shut up and get in the damn car, loser." He snarled at me.
What the hell was that?! "Excuse me?" I was gaining confidence as his shitty attitude began to grate on my nerves.
"My Old Man saw you, recognized the uniform and now I'm telling you to get in the damn car." He was about to blow a fuse.
"Katsuki!" A woman with the same dusty blonde hair and crimson eyes appeared behind him and smacked him over the back of the head so hard I swore I heard his brain rattling in his skull. Dear god! It all made sense! This was where it came from! "That's no way to talk to a girl!"
My eyes were probably wide as saucers. I wasn't entirely sure if it was safe to be in a car with this family, it was definitely going to blow up in a fiery rage of violence and aggression. I'd be better off walking. His mom aggressively held him by the back of the neck in a forced apologetic bow before extending her hand to me with a smile.
"Mitsuki Bakugo, so nice to meet a classmate of Katsuki's."
This was not happening! I shakily accepted her hand, "Ava Tsukauchi. It's nice to meet you Mrs. Bakugo."
"We'll give you a ride to the station, come along dear." She smiled sweetly at me as she marched her son across the street.
They were all crazy! Well maybe his dad was sane...then again, he married her...and they conceived that. I nervously followed after them. Once we reached the car Mitsuki released her hold on her son before smacking him on the back of the head and growling at him to open the door for a lady. The look he shot in my direction at this remark, made me wish for a quick and painless death.
Bakugo wrenched the car door open with enough force I was surprised it didn't fly off the hinges, "Get. In." he growled through clenched teeth.
For a fleeting moment I thought of those people that got crushed in elevator doors and wondered if he'd slam the door on me, with as angry as he was it would probably kill me. I moved as quickly as I could and almost yelped when he slammed the door shut behind me narrowly avoiding crushing my foot. He was pissed!
His dad offered me a smile through the rearview mirror, "Good morning Ava, I'm Masaru Bakugo, it's nice to meet you." He was so nice! Did they kidnap him? Was this an example of Stockholm's Syndrome?
"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Bakugo, thank you for the ride." I bowed my head politely and jumped as a very irate Katsuki slumped into the backseat beside me and slammed his door shut. The glare he threw at me told me he was most likely going to kill me the moment his parents dropped us at the station and drove away.
I sat on the edge of my seat with my hands folded in my lap. Even though I was tense and my fight or flight was in hyperdrive I managed to exchange the expected social pleasantries with his parents, which only seemed to irk him further. By the time we reached the station his mother had already made sure we exchanged contact information and insisted I visit them for dinner sometime. I was deader than dead!
"Katsuki, make sure you get the door." His mother growled at him as his father slowed the car to a stop just outside the station.
"Thank you again, Mr. and Mrs. Bakug-ow!" I cut off with a yelp as Katsuki ripped me out of the backseat and dragged me away from the car. His grip on my arm was so tight I could see the tips of my fingers beginning to turn blue.
"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!"
"Wondering if that's going to need amputated." I shot back at him sarcastically indicating my arm.
His crimson eyes swept downward taking in the subtle shift in color of my hand before his grip loosened. "Come to my house again and I will kill you!" He glared.
"Very heroic of you." I could feel the same spark from yesterday, that same fiery rage that began to well up inside of me as he provoked me further. Why the hell did he stir me up so much? I was always the type to remain calm, collected and quiet. I always kept my head down and kept to myself but for some reason he sparked something within me, something that made me want to act, to fight, and to thrive. "You know, one day you're going to threaten someone that'll put you in your place, perhaps you should be careful."
"That a threat?" He smirked, he was being cocky again, overconfident as ever, still looking down on me.
"No, it was a fact." I utilized the self-defense tactics I'd learned from the precinct and broke his hold on my arm just as the train pulled into the station before darting away from him. I had to keep my distance, he made me act recklessly. What if he kept provoking me and I snapped and lost control, what if I created another Earthquake and killed hundreds of innocents in the city? Katsuki Bakugo was a very dangerous person for me to be around.
