Chapter Nine

On Thursday I woke feeling somewhat nervous. I was supposed to go to Bakugo's house the following evening for dinner. Detective Tsukauchi left early and took the paperwork in to work to finalize my adoption. Once I was alone in the house, I started to feel uneasy and decided to head to school early. I felt vulnerable when I was alone.

When I got to school I noticed a few other early birds. Yaoyorozu and Jiro were sitting at Jiro's desk chatting. They looked up as I stepped into the classroom. Worry was etched upon both of their faces as they watched me carefully.

"Good Morning." I forced myself to smile.

"Hey Ava, are you feeling better?" Yaoyorozu asked me worriedly.

"Yeah. Sorry for worrying you guys. I've just been having some trouble sleeping lately and I guess it caught up to me." I laughed.

They exchanged worried looks. They didn't believe me. I thought back on Bakugo's words. Mr. Aizawa had told everyone not to bother me about it.

"Is that all?" Jiro asked hesitantly. Yaoyorozu shook her head at her.

I bit my lip, I didn't want to lie to them but I didn't want my secret to be out.

"Does it have anything to do with that scar on your back?" Jiro continued receiving a scolding look from Yaoyorozu and drawing the attention of the few other early birds.

I sighed. "Yes. I'm not ready to talk about it just yet. When I'm ready, I promise I'll tell you."

They both relaxed.

"Did you want to copy my notes from yesterday?" Yaoyorozu asked me as I took a seat at the desk in front of Jiro's to join their conversation.

Included in the folder Bakugo had given me with my homework was a neatly compiled copy of notes from all of the days lessons. "No that's okay, I already got a copy when I got my makeup work from Bakugo. Who told Mr. Aizawa we live near each other?"

They stared at me blankly as if this was all news to them. "What are you talking about?" Yaoyorozu pondered.

Was it possible Bakugo had lied and volunteered to bring me my homework and copies of his notes? "Never mind." I laughed nervously. If I revealed he was a big softy he'd probably kill me, for real.

"We should exchange numbers so we can get in contact with each other next time something happens." Yaoyorozu suggested.

After exchanging contact information and programming them both into my mobile device I headed to my desk as more of our classmates began to file in. Bakugo barely gave me a second look as he slumped into his seat. When Mr. Aizawa stepped into the room, his gaze fell on me but he didn't say a word as he stepped up to the podium at the front and center of the room. He informed us that we'd all be going to an off-campus facility for some rescue training, before sending us off to get changed and telling us all to meet him in the parking lot where a bus was waiting for us.

I trailed after Yaoyorozu and Jiro to change into our costumes. During my absence the day prior, the class had elected the President and Vice president, Midoriya had earned the most votes but relinquished his title to Tenya Iida, the serious boy with the glasses. Yaoyorozu was made Vice President as she had received the second most votes.

"I'm sorry, if I'd have stayed in class I would have voted for you too." I apologized to her as we changed into our costumes.

Yaoyorozu smiled at this, "Thanks Ava."

After we all got changed, we headed out to the parking lot to find Mr. Aizawa and the boys already waiting for us. Our new class president was pacing back and forth telling everyone how to assemble onto the bus for the quickest boarding. He was taking his job far too seriously.

"Everyone get on the bus." Mr. Aizawa waved everyone ahead before his gaze fell on me, "Ava, a word please."

I noticed all of my classmates react to this, they were all curious. Curiosity led to snooping which could lead to my secret being found out. Hesitantly I approached Mr. Aizawa as the rest of the students filed onto the bus. Before he could speak I bowed my head apologetically.

"I'm sorry for my behavior yesterday, I didn't mean to disrupt class-." He lightly dropped a hand on my shoulder, cutting off my rambling apology. I nervously lifted my head to meet his gaze wondering what kind of look I'd see. He knew my secret now. Would he think of me as the demon spawn of those vile monsters who killed innocents?

"Are you alright, Ava?" Mr. Aizawa asked me earnestly, there was no judgement in his gaze only concern. He didn't despise me now? He didn't think I was a vile, wretched, demon spawn that needed to be eliminated?

I nodded my head feeling somewhat speechless. Mr. Aizawa knew my secret yet was showing concern for my well-being. Most people who found out my secret wanted me dead. When I was a child, I was constantly under attack before Detective Tsukauchi took me in and gave me his name. "T-thank you, Mr. Aizawa."

"Go on." He waved me off with a smile and I boarded the bus.

The only seat open, save for the seat at the front for Mr. Aizawa, was the seat next to Bakugo. His wild crimson eyes glanced upward and narrowed into a glare as they met mine. It was a much softer glare than usual, it didn't have his usual fire. I dropped into the seat next to him and felt an almost electric jolt course through me as my arm brushed against his.

For the entire ride, I sat on the edge of my seat to keep from touching him and avoiding the side glares he shot in my direction. After a few minutes, while all of our other classmates began discussing their quirks and making general observations I looked over in Bakugo's direction.

"What?" He grumbled in annoyance as he caught my gaze.

"About tomorrow...w-what should I wear?" I asked nervously careful to keep my voice quiet so no one else would hear.

"Why the hell does it matter?" He growled gruffly and turned away from me to look out the window.

"You have the worst manners." I muttered under my breath and folded my arms in front of my chest as I turned my body away from him.

"...If any of our classmates have pro quirks its Todoroki, Bakugo and Ava..." I heard Kirishima's voice from the front open part of the bus.

"Sure, but Bakugo's always angry so he'll never be popular." Tsuyu Asui a girl with long dark green hair and a frog quirk wearing a skin tight green and black outfit piped up causing Bakugo to flip his lid.

I jumped as Bakugo launched to his feet with an enraged snarl, "What'd you say?! I'll kick your ass!"

"Ya see?" Tsu snickered as she pointed casually in Bakugo's direction as he'd just proven her point.

"Sit down you hot head." I grumbled in annoyance, I didn't like when he turned on our classmates like this, it reminded me of our first day and how he'd looked down on everyone.

"I'll kick your ass too!" Bakugo snarled at me.

"In your dreams, anger management." He'd flipped whatever switch it was in my brain that only he seemed able to flip, he'd made me angry again. I was on my feet, facing him down ready for anything he'd throw at me.

"I'm not the basket case." He shot in a burst of rage but looked as if he instantly regretted it as his words pierced through me like a knife. He wasn't wrong. I was a basket case. I was unstable. I shouldn't even be here.

Before I could fight back or react in anyway, Mr. Aizawa broke it up. "Hey, hey! We're here. Stop Messing around."

I zoned out as I followed everyone off the bus trying to keep myself calm. Did he really think I was a basket case? Perhaps I was. Why did I ever think I could ever be anything more than the cursed spawn of two evil doers? I'd never be able to be a hero. Who wanted a hero that lost her mind every time she saw a plush rabbit or heard a dog bark? What if I just ended up hurting more people?

At some point my body must have moved on autopilot following the rest of my class because when I returned to my senses we were inside listening to the space hero, Thirteen, as he finished up a lecture on the importance of being careful with one's quirk and how dangerous quirks could be. I knew first hand, I'd killed my parents with my quirk, more would have died if we'd lived in the city or if the cages they kept their victims in had been weaker. Maybe it would have been better for everyone if Detective Tsukauchi had let me die that day.

My thoughts grew darker and more self-doubt and self-loathing ate away at me. I looked beyond Thirteen as he finished his speech and felt a gasp escape me as I noticed a dark warped shadow appear in front of the fountain in the center of the dome shaped building. It was the same dark matter that appeared when the plush rabbit appeared. Why here? Why now? My body moved on its own accord and I took a shaky step backward. Was it real or was I hallucinating?

I bumped into someone standing behind me and nearly let out a terrified yelp as my nerves ran away with me. Strong hands gripped the sides of my arms in a tight grasp. "Watch where you're going." Bakugo grumbled softly from behind me.

Mr. Aizawa suddenly tensed and turned to follow my terrified gaze as the dark shadow began to expand and people began to spill forth. My heart pounded unsteadily in my chest and I felt like I was going to hyperventilate. That was the same quirk that made the rabbit appear, was the person responsible for the rabbit, the person responsible for these intruders?

"Stay together and don't move!" Mr. Aizawa barked alerting the others to what was happening as dozens of people stepped from the shadowy vortex, "Thirteen, protect the students."

Bakugo didn't release me from his hold, for which I was grateful as I wasn't entirely sure I'd be able to keep myself upright. My entire body was trembling uncontrollably. A few people shifted to try and get a closer look at what was going on.

"Stay back!" Mr. Aizawa barked, "This is real, those are villains."

My heart dropped. Villains. Like my parents? No. I could feel my fragile psyche beginning to slip. Villains were the ones sneaking into my home? Why were they following me? Why were they haunting me? What did they want from me?

"Hey. Pull yourself together." Bakugo grumbled from behind me as he tightened his grip on my arms pulling me out of the darkest recesses of my troubled mind.

The rest of the students were too absorbed with trying to figure out how the villains got in, why the alarms weren't going off and what the villains' purpose for attacking here were to notice my breakdown. I took a deep breath in an attempt to steady my nerves.

"S-sorry. I'm fine now." I panted softly as he eased his grip. The rest of the students turned to follow Thirteen back toward the entrance. Bakugo lightly shoved me in the right direction and followed after me as Mr. Aizawa went to meet the horde of villains, head on.

We didn't make it too far before our path to the exit was cut off by a shadowy vortex that appeared on the path ahead. A specter like being entirely encased in shadow stepped from the vortex. He was wearing a nice suit set and his entire body seemed to be made of the strange shadowy substance. His bright electric yellow eyes fell on me for a brief moment before turning to Thirteen.

"There is no escape for you." His dark deep voice sent a shiver down my spine, I recognized his voice from somewhere.

My body suddenly felt cold and clammy as I found myself remembering a time long ago, when my parents were still alive. Father and mother had a friend over, they said it was a work friend. I didn't see him, I was supposed to be in my room. I'd snuck out of my room to play outside and I'd heard his voice in the living room, the same deep voice.

"It's a pleasure to meet you. We are the League of Villains. I know it's impolite but we decided to invite ourselves in to this haven of justice to say hello. And besides, isn't this a fitting place for All Might the symbol of peace to take his last breath? I believe he was supposed to be here today and yet I see no sign of him. There must have been some sort of change in plans we could not have foreseen. Ah. Well in the end I suppose it doesn't matter." His bright yellow eyes flicked back in my direction, "We can still retrieve Little Ava."

I gasped at this and several of my classmates turned to me looking worried. Me? They were after me and they wanted to kill Uncle All Might? Why? Bakugo and Kirishima lunged simultaneously at the shadowy specter of a man. What were they doing?! They were going to get killed, because of me!

"You live up to your school's reputation," Shadow man chuckled, their attack had no effect on him. "But you should be more careful children, otherwise someone might get hurt." He was going to hurt them!

"No!" I screamed in a panic not wanting to see any of my classmates get hurt. The ground beneath my feet began to shift unsteadily causing the entire building to tremble. Their attack did nothing. They couldn't get ahold of him physically his body was made of shadows and darkness. My body moved on its own accord, without thinking. I stomped my foot to the ground and raised my hands to the heavens shifting the plates beneath me causing a pillar of earth to shoot forth from the ground shielding Bakugo and Kirishima from the shadowy specter of a man.

"You two get out of the way right now!" Thirteen ordered Bakugo and Kirishima, once they were safely out of harm's way I cast my hands outward causing the pillar of earth to topple toward the shadowy man as Thirteen prepared his attack.

"I'll scatter you across this facility" Shadow man was on his feet, he'd dodged the crumbling pillar of earth. "To meet my comrades and your deaths." He cast his shadowy hands outward and a veil of darkness fell on us all.

Bakugo swung his arm back hitting me hard enough in the gut I was sent flying outside of the shadowy vortex. I hit the railing of the walkway just outside of the vortex of darkness and slumped against the railing for support as my insides churned unpleasantly from his strike. I could hear the frantic voices of my classmates inside the darkness, they were starting to disappear one by one.

"Bakugo!" I panicked as I saw a brief glimpse of him within the darkness before he vanished. He'd saved me and now he was gone! Tenya dove out of the darkness with Sato and Uraraka and the three of them landed next to me.

"What's going on?!" Tenya stared in awestruck horror as the darkness turned into a giant dome around our fellow classmates.

Once the cloak of darkness lifted only a handful of students remained. Mezo Shoji, the boy who had a mutation quirk with several arms had managed to protect Hanta Sero and Mina Ashido and the class rep had gotten Ochaco Uraraka and Rikido Sato out of the dome so they wouldn't get taken. The villain ignored Thirteen and Bakugo had saved me, everyone else had vanished.

"I see you took after your father, Little Ava. You have such a strong quirk." Shadow Man turned his gaze on me.

The boys tried to put themselves between me and the shadow man but I had a feeling if he truly wanted to get to me he could and he would. My breathing was coming out in short shallow gasps as I struggled to keep myself calm and keep my mind focused on the now. I couldn't allow myself to drift into the past and pull up all those painful memories.

"Don't be foolish children, you can't keep Little Ava away from us."

He was stalling for some reason, otherwise he would have just used his quirk to whisk me away. They were still hoping All Might would show up and probably trying to keep any of the students running for any additional help.

"Shoji, can you use your quirk to find out if the others are okay and where they ended up?" I turned to the quiet boy with the silver hair and the mutation quirk that made him appear to have webbed arms. Panicking would do me no good, I had to stay calm and show them I wasn't affected by them. I had to keep the focus off of me and make sure my classmates were okay.

Shoji nodded and ears began forming on the ends of his mutated arms along with a mouth. He always wore a mask over his face only revealing his eyes and it made me wonder if he actually had a face as he'd never removed it and only spoke through his mutation.

"Shoji. Got them? Anything?" Tenya Iida asked calmly from in front of me. "Where is everyone?" He continued playing the role of class representative well.

"They've been scattered across the facility. But our classmates are still here." Shoji replied and everyone else sighed in relief.

"What do we do?" Hanta Sero a boy with dark hair and a tape quirk asked warily as we all turned to face Shadow Man.

"Keep Ava away from the creeper." Mina Ashido volunteered and Uraraka nodded her agreement.

"Class Rep." Thirteen called back to Iida.

"Yes?" Iida jumped into action.

"I have a job for you. Run to the school and tell the faculty what's going on here. The alarms aren't sounding and our phones and radios are useless right now. One of these villains must be to blame. Even though Eraser Head is canceling people's quirks left and right we're still completely sealed off from the outside world. Likely whoever is causing this interference hid as soon as they warped into the USJ. They could be anywhere, impossible to hunt down. It'll be faster for you to run and get help than for us to find whoever is jamming everything."

The class rep didn't seem to like this plan and attempted to protest, "Yes, but- it would be disgraceful for me to leave you all behind."

"Go Emergency Exit." Rikido Sato, a large boy with unkempt dark brown hair and fat lips stepped forward, "There are lots of alarms outside. That's why they're keeping us all trapped in the USJ, right?" He took on a fighting stance preparing to attempt to hold off the shadow man though we'd just seen physical attacks had no effect on him.

Hanta Sero stepped forward too, "As long as you can get outside, they won't follow. Blow this bastard mist away with those engine legs." He got into a fighting stance.

"I can cover you." I looked to the dark-haired class rep, his dark eyes were flooded with worry beneath his glasses lenses.

"Use your quirk to save others." Thirteen piped up. "Be a real hero."

"I can help you out too." Uraraka beamed, "Just like I did when I floated you in the cafeteria."

I planted my feet firmly and got a feel for the tectonic plates beneath the earth's surface focusing on how to shift them to best help me. I'd need more mountainous pillars to cover Iida.

"Even if this is your only option, are you really foolish enough to strategize in front of your enemy?" Shadow man launched a wave of darkness at us.

I stomped my foot into the ground, hard, and pulled up a large mountainous pillar of earth. It rocketed through the floor and created a barrier in front of us all, shielding us from his attack. Thirteen geared up for his attack.

"Ava, drop it now." He called back to me and I hurriedly flattened the mountainous shield. "Black Hole!" He released one of the caps on the fingers of his suit and began drawing everything in front of him inward, sucking up the darkness that had tried to encircle us.

Shadow man created a warp gate behind Thirteen's back that used his own attack against him. Everyone panicked. He was going to get seriously hurt! I stomped my foot into the ground once more and raised up another pillar of earth trying to shield him from the warp gate, but the earth kept getting sucked into the black hole.

"Thirteen!" Mina Ashido and Ochaco Uraraka screamed as he finally managed to stop his attack and collapsed to the ground the entire back half of his suit had been ripped open.

"Iida, get out of here. Go now!" Sato yelled.

Iida took off in a flash. I shifted the plates subtly trying to give him a boost like I did with the softball on our first day using a miniscule mountain range to push him forward at an even faster pace.

"A sheep trying to escape from the wolves. I simply cannot allow that." Shadow Man lunged for Iida.

I managed to shift the angle of my foot and send a pillar of earth skyrocketing toward the ceiling blocking his path. "GO IIDA!"

A wave of darkness flew in my direction.

"AVA!" My classmates panicked. I was too focused on helping Iida, I couldn't dodge in time!

I screamed as the darkness engulfed me. Darkness was all around me. It was like I was trapped in some kind of dark abyss. There was nothing but cold, silence and darkness. I couldn't see or hear anything. What was happening? There was no sense of time in this strange darkness and once I was alone, I felt myself begin to crumble.
