Chapter Nineteen

I stayed with Uncle All Might for a few days while Detective Tsukauchi and the precinct worked tirelessly in an attempt to find The League of Villains and more specifically the Warp Gate villain, Kurogiri who claimed to be my godfather. Though they still hadn't found anything, Detective Tsukauchi insisted I continue on like normal and told me to go ahead and go to the Hero Internship all of the hero course students were participating in.

After the festival we'd created hero names for ourselves and found out how many agencies scouted us after the festival. I was surprised to find I had just as many requests as Bakugo. I'd chosen to intern with a Pro Hero by the name of Landslide who had an earth type quirk. I was hoping he could help me with controlling my quirk better. He was in the same district as Best Jeanist, the current number three hero.

Since the precinct was still tirelessly working to find my godfather, I got special permission from the school to have Detective Tsukauchi drive me to Landslide's Agency. We arrived early in the morning. Detective Tsukauchi walked me into Landslide's Agency. He looked so tired it made me feel sick with guilt.

We were greeted in the large open entrance lobby by a tall, muscular man with dark brown hair that he had pulled back in a sleek ponytail with a few gold hoops sectioning it. He had a long goatee with little gold hoops around it in three different sections. There were gold arm bands around his bulging biceps and his wrists that sort of made him look like a genie. His outfit was also somewhat genie like with very airy earth toned pants that were cinched at the ankles with two gold hoops. He wore an open vest in a matching earth tone as his pants that revealed his muscular torso.

"Ah, you must be little Ava." He had a dazzling smile that probably disarmed a lot of women. His voice was warm and welcoming. He extended his hand to me in greeting and I nervously accepted it.

"Th-thank you for having me, Landslide Sir." I bowed my head once he released my hand.

"No need to be so formal." He smiled before extending his hand to Detective Tsukauchi. "Nice to meet you both."

"Nice to meet you." Detective Tsukauchi smiled and handed him a business card, "my cell number is on there, if you need anything at all, please call."

Landslide accepted it and nodded his understanding, "I'll keep it on hand but I doubt we'll be needing it."

Detective Tsukauchi looked a little relieved by his confidence before turning to wrap me in a hug, "have fun, call me if you need me, listen to Landslide and his sidekicks, make sure you take care of yourself." He was in full on dad mode.

I couldn't help but smile as I hugged him back, "thanks, Dad." It rolled off the tongue naturally now, there wasn't any awkwardness or hesitation when I called him Dad. It felt right.

He squeezed me tight before releasing me, "I love you."

"I love you too."

Detective Tsukauchi reluctantly took his leave and Landslide took me on a tour of the agency and introduced me to his sidekicks. Once introductions and the tour were done, I changed into my hero costume. Landslide took me around the city to patrol. He was a warm person and instantly put me at ease. He asked about school and my favorite subjects. We talked about different heroes and he asked me about why I wanted to be a hero. Nothing exciting happened, we were stopped a few times by some fans of his who wanted photos and autographs.

We stopped at a nearby park early in the afternoon for a break. Landslide told me to go relax for a bit after our morning of walking around and socializing. I went to sit next to the pond as he talked to another gaggle of fans. Not long after I'd sat down to watch the ducks swimming in the pond, I heard Landslide call out to someone in greeting.

"Oh! Best Jeanist, you've got a little intern too?"

I turned my head and felt a laugh bubble up in my throat as I spotted a very irritated Bakugo with his hair smoothed down wearing a ridiculous pair of blue jeans instead of the usual baggy dark pants he wore with his hero costume. I clapped my hand over my mouth to keep myself from laughing realizing it would only anger him. His crimson eyes narrowed as he spotted me with my hand covering my mouth and tears of laughter brimming in my waterline. He stomped toward me.

"What the hell is so damn funny?" He growled angrily.

"N-nothing." I stifled a laugh as I rolled to my feet.

"Stop laughing!" He snarled as the tips of his ears reddened.

"I'm n-not laughing." I bit my lip to keep from cracking a smile.

"Sh-shut up!" He raged, "what the hell are you doing here anyway?"

"I'm interni-." I began but cut off as he shot me a glare.

"You didn't leave with everyone else." He eyed me suspiciously, "and you've been out of it all week. What's going on?"

My cheeks reddened; I'd had no idea he paid so much attention to me. "It's probably nothing."

"Probably?" He frowned and folded his arms in front of his chest.

"I thought I saw that warp gate villain, from the USJ incident...the police are looking into it, but they haven't found anything yet...I guess I've just been worr-."

"That's a stupid thing to worry about." Bakugo huffed.

"What do you mean?" I mirrored his pose folding my arms in front of me as I shot him a sharp look.

"Like I'd let that shadowy bastard take you. We're still tied idiot; I'm not going to let you make me look bad." He scoffed and averted his gaze. The redness in his ears spread to his cheeks and I held back a smile as I remembered all the times his mother had scolded and embarrassed him. She always hinted that he liked me, and thinking of what she'd say to him now made me smile.

"Heads up!" A voice called from across the park.

I looked over in the direction of the voice and blanched as a bright orange frisbee flew straight toward my face. My body froze up and I flinched, anticipating the impact. It never came. Hesitantly I peeked and spotted a familiar arm in front of me. Bakugo had caught it.

"Sorry about that! Can we get our frisbee bac-?"

Bakugo activated his quirk and it exploded in his grip.

"What did you go and do that for?!" I snapped at him and turned only to gasp as I came face to face with his irate glare.

"Next time I'll let it break your face!" he growled.

"There won't be a next time you just destroyed their frisbee!" I glared back at him feeling the familiar fire, that only he seemed capable of bringing out in me, build up inside of me. I clenched my fists at my sides as I stared back at him, refusing to back down.

"Come on, little Ava, let's grab some lunch." Landslide called over to me. I could hear the smile in his voice and had a feeling he and Best Jeanist were laughing at our display.

"Ah, okay, Landslide Sir." I relaxed, forcing a smile, and made a move to step away from Bakugo.

He caught me by the wrist halting my escape, "if you tell anyone about this, you're dead, loser." He growled as he indicated his current appearance.

I rolled my eyes and broke from his hold with ease before scampering off after my mentor. I bowed politely to Best Jeanist before hurrying after Landslide. He gently pat me on the head. "What did I tell you about being so formal?" He chuckled.

"Ah, sorry." I blanched as I struggled to keep up with his long strides.

"Boyfriend?" He asked me with a teasing smile causing my face to burn hot.

"Absolutely not!" I protested.

Landslide smiled but thought against teasing me further, "what are you thinking for lun-?" He cut off as we heard the sound of panicked screams in the distance. "Let's go."

I raced after him feeling my heart pound in my chest at the prospect of running into villains. In the back of my mind I couldn't help but think about the shadowy warp gate villain. Was he here? Pushing my worry to the back of my mind I hurried to keep up with Landslide as we ran toward the screams. As we got further into the city, I could feel a faint rumbling in the earth and for a split second thought I'd somehow activated my quirk. After a moment I realized it wasn't an earthquake as it seemed to be concentrated in one area near a park with an outdoor ice-skating rink.

As we neared the park, we saw people trying to flee the ice-skating rink as the structure trembled and looked as if it might topple. There were pillars holding up an intricate awning to protect the rink from the elements that was now unsteady. The civilians were crowding around the exits and falling down in their panic, slipping on the ice. Landslide activated his quirk as we got closer and I watched in awe as the ice turned to soft dirt and people were able to move through it easier.

"Ava, can you support the structure and keep it from falling?" Landslide called to me.

"Yes sir!" I yelped and activated my quirk creating pillars of hard earth that popped up out of the ground to support the awning so it wouldn't fall and crush any of the civilians.

The ground continued to tremble. It sounded like something was moving through the earth beneath us. Landslide used his quirk to create a wave of soft dirt to push the civilians to safety as I kept the structure upright. I heard the sidewalk beneath me start to crack and looked down to see what looked like a drill start to poke out of the ground.

"Landslide!" I called as I slowly moved away from the crumbling sidewalk. He turned and noticed the cracked pavement with a frown.

"Someone's burrowing underground. Stand back." He cast his hands out and I watched in awe as the sidewalk turned to soft pliable dirt. There was a ripple in the earth that resembled ripples in water from an impact and I felt the earth beneath me begin to give a little, he'd turned the dirt far beneath us soft making it nearly impossible to burrow through. "Ava, can you create a wall around the perimeter to keep the civilians safe?"

I nodded and concentrated on the tectonic plates beneath us. Shifting them, I managed to create a perfect circular wall around the perimeter to keep the civilians safe from harm. Once the perimeter was secured, I took a few steps back to stay out of his way. Landslide smiled at me before swan diving into the soft dirt he'd created with his quirk. He could swim through it like it was water though it was more like sand.

Something tugged on me from behind and I let out a squeak as I was lifted off the ground and wrenched back toward the perimeter I'd created. Having nothing to ground me I started to feel light headed and somewhat nauseous before I landed in someone's outstretched arms. The world around me was spinning and I hurriedly closed my eyes as I tried to reorient myself.

"You two stay put, keep the civilians safe from harm, I'll assist Landslide." A quiet calm dignified voice sounded from beside me and I chanced a peek. Best Jeanist leapt over the wall I'd created and I realized he'd used his quirk to pull me to safety.

I turned to see who was holding me, though I already knew from the tight embrace. I was met with a pair of bright crimson eyes. My gaze swept to his flattened dusty blonde hair and I couldn't help but giggle. It really didn't suit him at all.

The moment the giggle escaped me, Bakugo glared down at me and released me from his hold. I hit the ground, hard, and shot him a reproachful look. "Why are you always so rude?" I mustered a glare as I laid flat on my back on the ground taking a moment to reorient myself.

"Shut up." Bakugo grumbled before thrusting a hand in my direction to help me off the ground.

Now that I was feeling grounded and less shaky, I placed my hand in his and flinched thinking he was going to rip my arm out of its socket as he wrenched me to my feet. He was surprisingly gentle as he yanked me to my feet. Without another word, Bakugo turned to scowl at the civilians who were starting to crowd around to get a look as Best Jeanist and Landslide handled the villains that had been burrowing underground.

"Get lost!" Bakugo snarled startling a group of small children and scaring most of the civilians away. His hair seemed to free itself of the product keeping it smoothed down as he yelled at everyone and it poofed up and returned to it's usual spikiness.

I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it. His grip on my hand, that I suddenly realized he was still holding, tightened, urging a gasp from my lips. He shot me a dark look, but it lacked the usual rage and violence whenever he looked at anyone else.

"Stay out of my way." He grumbled under his breath before releasing my hand from his hold and turning to yell at more civilians.

I shook my head at him and went in the opposite direction around the perimeter and politely asked the civilians to stay back for their safety. As I was making my rounds around the perimeter, a little boy ran toward me with tears in his eyes. The crowd parted and I knelt down to ask the boy what was wrong.

He dove into my arms with a cry, "I can't find mommy and the mean man yelled at me!"

Bakugo.

I sighed inwardly before offering the crying boy a smile, "don't worry, we'll find your mommy." I scanned the crowd for an authority figure but the police hadn't arrived yet and there weren't any other heroes on the scene yet. "why don't you stick with me? We'll look for her together."

The boy nodded and scrambled onto my back before I could say any more. I shrugged and kept walking scanning the crowd for any frantic looking women. He couldn't remember what she was wearing but was able to inform me she had short dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

We made it halfway around the circle before bumping into Bakugo who was still snarling and threatening civilians to keep them at bay. It seemed to be working since almost everyone had seen the Sports Festival on TV. They all thought him a violent deranged delinquent. He played the part well, but I knew he was a big softy deep deep deep deep down.

"Ah! It's the meanie!" The boy clinging to my back cried as he spotted Bakugo.

"Figures." I sighed.

Bakugo noticed the child clinging to me and scowled, "what the hell are you doing?"

"Stop scaring children!" I growled at him as we got closer.

"What?!" Bakugo glowered.

"You're being mean and its scaring people!" I snapped.

"Good! Maybe they'll be smart and stay away then!" Bakugo snarled back at me.

I shook my head at this.

"Mommy!" The child on my back pointed off to the side into the crowd.

I turned and spotted a middle-aged woman with short dark brown hair and tear-filled hazel eyes. She spotted us and let out a cry as she ran toward us.

"Mika! Where have you been?! I was so worried!" She cried.

I knelt down so Mika could scramble off my back and run to his mother. I couldn't help but smile as they were reunited both crying as they hugged one another.

"Come on." Bakugo shoved me roughly in the arm.

"Thank you!" Mika and his mother cried and waved after us frantically as Bakugo steered me away.

Before long, Landslide and Best Jeanist had all the burrowing villains in custody and the surrounding crowd cheered. Apparently some directionally challenged villains with some burrowing quirks tried to dig their way to the vault of one of the banks and took a wrong turn ending up at the outdoor ice-skating rink. Once the villains were in police custody and everyone had given their statements Best Jeanist and Landslide joined us. Best Jeanist sighed as he realized Bakugo had messed up his hair and scared a bunch of civilians. I thought I heard him mutter 'lost cause' under his breath.

"You did a great job today, Ava." Landslide beamed as he draped an arm across my shoulders.

"I was only following your direction." I blushed.

"No need to be so modest, you did good work." Landslide smiled, "How about we get that lunch now?"

I smiled, "sounds good."
