Chapter Thirteen
I was nervous Monday morning as I woke up to get ready for school. It was my first day returning back, after the USJ incident...After Midoriya, Todoroki and Kirishima learned about my parents... Detective Tsukauchi had to go into the office early and apologized a dozen times before leaving because he wouldn't be able to take me to school. After reassuring him I was fine he left for the day and I went to take a shower and get ready for school.
As I finished braiding my long dark hair to the side, I heard a loud knock at the door that somehow seemed to convey a sense of arrogance and annoyance. Sighing, I opened the front door and felt my heart skip a beat as I spotted Bakugo dressed and ready for school standing on my porch. His crimson eyes were filled with annoyance. He grumbled something incoherent at me before motioning to the street behind him where his parents waited in their car both waving at me with bright smiles.
"Um?"
"Come on." Bakugo grumbled.
"O-okay, let me get my bag." I turned suddenly feeling nervous and awkward and went to grab my backpack from the kitchen where I'd finished up some last-minute homework assignments. When I returned to the porch, I locked the door and followed the ever grumpy Katsuki Bakugo to his parent's car.
He opened the door for me before his mother could snap at him and avoided my gaze as I looked to him in awe. I held back a laugh and got in the backseat only to let out a squeak as Katsuki pushed me over with a gruff 'scoot over' nearly causing me to bounce my head off the opposite window. I sat up and was about to tell him off as I righted myself in the seat behind the driver's seat but cut off as his mother swung around and smacked him upside the head with enough force he almost fell out of the car. Just another casual Bakugo family morning.
Katsuki scrambled into the back seat after me and slammed the door shut before turning on his mother, "What the hell was that for?!"
"You don't treat a lady like that!" Mrs. Bakugo snarled at her son before turning to me with a bright smile, "Good Morning, Ava dear."
I stared at her with wide eyes before recovering from her rapid shift in moods, "G-good Morning Mrs. Bakugo." I smiled before turning to Katsuki's father, "Good morning Mr. Bakugo."
"Good Morning Ava." Mr. Bakugo smiled back at me through the rearview mirror before safely pulling out onto the street.
"Did you have a good weekend?" Mrs. Bakugo asked me while shooting scathing looks at her son and trying to make motions telling him to speak up and engage in conversation which he was blatantly ignoring.
I pretended not to notice Mrs. Bakugo trying to teach her son how to talk to girls and offered her a polite smile, "I did, I went to the Aquarium with Nao-san, ah, my dad..."
"Oh, that sounds fun, see Katsuki the aquarium IS a good date idea." Mrs. Bakugo teased her son.
I looked over at Katsuki curiously only to jump as he snapped at his mother. "Shut up you old hag!"
"What did you just call me, punk?!" Mrs. Bakugo growled.
I chanced a glance at Mr. Bakugo as I slowly shrank away from the fighting pair and made myself as small as possible. Mr. Bakugo didn't seem the slightest bit phased by his violent wife and son and continued driving with a pleasant smile on his face watching the road and not seeming to pay any mind to the war about to start in the car. How did he do it?
The car came to a stop outside of UA Academy. "What the hell, old man?! I thought you were dropping us off at the station."
"What's the problem? We weren't in a hurry today so we could take you two to school." Mrs. Bakugo thunked him over the head at his rudeness.
"I don't want to be seen with her." Katsuki pointed at me and I winced sympathetically as his mom punched him full force in the side of the skull.
"What's wrong with being seen with a cute girl?!" My face turned bright red at this and I noticed the tips of Katsuki's ears begin to redden.
"You can sneak away now if you want, Ava." Mr. Bakugo smiled back at me from the rearview mirror.
"Yep." I nodded and slowly opened my door. "Thanks." I waved farewell to him as Katsuki and his mother got into another screaming match before bolting for the school. The Bakugo's had to be the most stress inducing family ever to exist. Even though they were violent, a little crazy and very unorthodox I had to admit they were all pretty great, weird, but great.
I didn't make it too far before a hand caught me by the arm roughly and spun me about nearly causing me to lose my balance and go toppling into the grass off the walkway. "You forgot this." Katsuki grumbled as he roughly shoved my backpack into my hands and released me from his hold.
"Ah...thanks..." I blushed as I gripped my backpack tightly in my hands, half expecting him to be storming away from me but looked up and was more than a little surprised to find him still standing before me. Why was he still here? I thought he'd be in a hurry to get away from me.
His violent crimson eyes flicked around at the students milling about heading to the main building to start their day. As I was about to open my mouth to question him, I spotted Midoriya out of the corner of my eye heading in our direction with his nose in one of his many notebooks he had for hero notes. Bakugo tensed a fraction as Midoriya looked up from his notes and spotted the pair of us. His eyes widened the briefest moment and for a split second I was overcome with panic thinking it was because he knew my secret and could now never look at me the same again.
"What are you looking at nerd?!" Bakugo snapped causing Midoriya to yelp, then I realized he had probably only been caught off guard by how close in proximity I was to Bakugo without getting chewed out.
"Ah, good morning Kacchan, Ava." Midoriya smiled somewhat uneasily and stepped away from Katsuki.
"Good morning Midoriya." I smiled somewhat nervously.
"Get lost, loser!" Bakugo snarled causing Midoriya to let out a panicked squeak and go running into the building.
"What the hell was that about?" I looked to Bakugo warily.
"It doesn't matter." He grumbled as we slowly made our way to the building.
"You being a big softy again and keeping everyone who knows the truth away from me so they don't upset me?" I asked him curiously. The faintest trace of color splashed across the tips of his ears at this. "You are!"
"Shut up." He growled before shoving me roughly in the direction of the building.
"Such a jerk." I rolled my eyes before glancing around to make sure the coast was clear, "Thanks Kacchan..."
When we got to class, I was surprised to find that Mr. Aizawa was already back to teaching looking like a mummy wrapped head to toe in bandages with both of his arms in slings. He informed us we'd need to start preparing for the UA Sports Festival as it was a good chance to get recognized by hero agencies and possibly be scouted, even as first years. This was a big chance for me, to show off my skills and get noticed by enough people that would recognize my potential and maybe, just maybe if I did well enough, even if the truth came out, maybe people would still accept me.
