Chapter Twenty One
With our exams fast approaching, I spent most of my time studying. Naomasa banned me from the kitchen until after exams were over as I'd nearly cut off my finger while trying to study and chop up vegetables at the same time. He agreed to handle the cooking which meant we were ordering out a lot. The weekend before our final exams, I got a text from Yaoyorozu's.
Y: Ava, I'm hosting a sleepover for all the girls in our class so we can study together and also have a bit of a relaxing break before our exams. I hope you'll attend.
I thought about what a sleepover at her massive mansion would be like before calling Naomasa at work. My imagination began to run wild as I waited for Naomasa to answer. Her bedroom was probably bigger than our whole house. The dishes probably sang and danced like in Beauty and the Beast. Naomasa answered on the third ring before my imagination could get any more carried away.
"Ava, everything alright?" He asked, sounding worried. I didn't usually call him at work.
"Y-yeah, sorry to bother you. I was invited to a sleepover at Yaoyorozu's, I just wanted to make sure that was okay with you." I felt bad for calling him at work, especially once I heard the worry in his voice.
"Oh, that sounds like a fine idea, I'm probably going to be working pretty late tonight, so I'd feel better knowing you were with your friends rather than alone at the house." He replied with a smile in his voice.
"Thanks, Dad." I smiled, it flowed off the tongue so naturally. "I'll see you in the morning?"
"Sounds good, have fun, Ava. I love you."
"I love you too, Dad." I beamed.
I hung up and went to pack an overnight bag and grab all of my notes and textbooks for studying. Once I was packed, I replied to Yaoyorozu. I didn't want to reply too quickly and reveal how starved for friendship I really was.
A: Thanks for inviting me! That sounds like a lot of fun. What time should I arrive?
Y: 5 o'clock, see you then!
I still had some time to kill. After double checking that I had everything packed and ready, I realized I still had a few hours. Unsure of what to do and too anxious about the upcoming sleepover, I sat nervously in the living room staring at the clock waiting until it was time for me to leave.
A loud thunderous knock that shook the front door startled me. I only knew one person who knocked like that. What was he doing here? I opened the door to find Bakugo standing on my porch with a wary looking Kirishima, probably startled by his violent knocking.
"What are you two doing her-?" I began but Bakugo cut me off as he stepped inside, shoving me out of his way.
"We're studying!" He snapped.
Kirishima bowed his head politely, "h-hey Ava."
"Good Afternoon, Kirishima." I offered him a smile before turning to Bakugo with a frown as he dropped into one of the chairs at the table. "I can't study for too long, I have to leave in a few hours."
Bakugo frowned, "why?"
Kirishima shook his head at Bakugo's blunt and aggressive behavior, "sorry for dropping in unannounced." He apologized politely.
I held back a laugh, "don't worry, Kirishima, I know you had nothing to do with it."
"Where are you going?" Bakugo asked, growing more irritated with us talking about him.
"A sleepover, if you must know." I retorted. I had meant to sound confident and casual like this was a normal occurrence, because for most teens it was, but my voice betrayed me and cracked with over eagerness and excitement.
Bakugo picked up on it, of course, but said nothing.
"That sounds fun." Kirishima smiled, "what does that entail? Scary movies? Pillow Fights? Facemasks?"
I blanched, I had no idea. "Is that normally what happens at sleepovers?" I asked unsure.
"Dunno." Kirishima shrugged, "just what ya see in the movies and stuff, I guess. Have you not been to one?"
I shook my head.
Kirishima smiled, "me either."
I felt relief flood through me, "really?"
"Yeah. Every time I got invited to one, something came up at home or plans got changed." He shrugged.
"Maybe the boys should also have a sleepover." I suggested.
"Hey that could be fun, what do you say, Bakugo?" Kirishima turned to Bakugo with a smile.
"No way in hell." Bakugo growled.
"I'll text the others." Kirishima pulled out his phone.
"I said no!" Bakugo roared.
Kirishima chuckled and ignored him.
I couldn't help but laugh. "Anyone want tea and cookies for studying?" I asked as I went to grab the electric kettle.
"Please." Kirishima beamed.
"Fine." Bakugo grumbled.
"I think that means yes in Bakugo." Kirishima piped up.
"It does." I laughed.
"Will you two stop it?!" Bakugo snapped.
"Embarrassed?" Kirishima pondered trying to translate.
"Yes." I giggled.
"Knock it off!" Bakugo exploded with rage causing Kirishima and I to laugh. "You two are annoying as hell."
"He likes us." Kirishima grinned.
"Absolutely or he'd be out the door." I snickered only to let out a squeal as Bakugo caught me in a headlock.
I elbowed him in the ribs and broke away with a smile realizing he was embarrassed and lashing out adorably. Kirishima chuckled as he watched safely from the small kitchen table. After I'd prepared the tea I set a plate with various cookies on it on the table and handed everyone their tea.
"Thanks Ava." Kirishima grinned as he dug into the cookies.
Bakugo smacked him over the head with a rolled up notebook, "quit stuffing your face moron, I don't have all day to help you." He growled.
Kirishima and I exchanged knowing looks and fought off another laughing fit before opening our books to study. Bakugo was a very violent tutor but an effective one. By the time I had to leave, Kirishima and I were both covered in bruises from Bakugo randomly smacking us with notebooks every time we missed a question or did something to annoy him. Though I hadn't missed nearly as many questions I had nearly equal bruises for being annoying.
Bakugo had a huge red imprint from his rolled up notebook across his forehead from when I finally snapped and yanked it out of his hands and hit him with it. Kirishima nearly died laughing. Nervously I got to my feet and stretched before looking to my overnight bag for the sleepover.
"Why the hell are you so nervous?" Bakugo huffed as Kirishima finished off the cookies.
"They don't know about my parents like you two do...what if we have a really fun time and then later on when they learn the truth they hate me and don't want to be friends." I panicked.
"That won't happen." Bakugo sounded oddly calm and serious.
"How do you know?" I asked nervously.
"Give our friends more credit than that, Ava." Kirishima offered me a grin, "it won't make a difference to them who your parents were. They like you for you."
I glanced over at Bakugo as he draped an arm across my shoulders. "What are you doing?"
"Walking you to the station." Bakugo growled as he picked up my bag.
Kirishima watched the pair of us with a small smile before collecting his things, "I'm heading out, Sero said he could host the sleepover for the boys if you're joining us, Bakugo."
Bakugo scowled, "not happening."
"Later you two!" Kirishima took his leave, exiting much too quickly for my liking, as if he thought something was going to happen.
Once I realized Bakugo and I were completely alone, my heart began to race. His arm was still around me making me feel hot and flushed. Where his arm made contact with the scar running down my spine, I felt a strange tingling sensation that made me shiver as we exited the house.
"Are you cold?" Bakugo hesitated.
I couldn't seem to find my words.
He shrugged out of the sweatshirt he was wearing and pulled it over my head a little more aggressively than was necessary but that was just part of his charm. It was warm and instantly brought me comfort.
"Th-thanks, Kacchan." I squeaked.
The tips of his ears reddened a little at this, "whatever." He grumbled suddenly flustered.
We walked quietly to the station. Bakugo had switched from having his arm around me to holding onto my wrist. I wasn't sure when the switch had happened and felt my pulse race as his hand slid down my wrist to capture my hand in his. My face flushed with heat.
"If you need to leave early, text me so you're not walking to the station alone." He grumbled under his breath, so softly I almost hadn't heard him.
My heart skipped a beat and I squeezed his hand tightly. "Thank you."
When we arrived at the station I spotted Ashido and Jiro. They took one look at our intertwined hands and broke into wide grins. Bakugo immediately dropped my hand and walked away in a huff once he realized I wasn't alone.
"You saw that too, right?" Ashido looked over at Jiro with a grin.
"Bakugo holding Ava's hand?" Jiro pondered aloud.
"Totally!" Ashido squealed.
My face burned at this, "ah, we were studying together with Kirishima he offered to walk me to the station." I stammered.
"Mhm." Ashido giggled.
"That sweatshirt looks a little big for you and definitely in a style Bakugo would wear." Jiro teased me.
I buried my face with my hands.
"Oh hey guys!" Ochaco joined us with a smile, "Ava what's wrong?"
"She has a crush!" Ashido squealed.
"A crush! Spill!" Toru joined in the squealing as she arrived with Asui.
I kept my face buried the entire way to Yaoyorozu's mansion, much to my classmates' delight. When we arrived, the immaculate mansion was enough of a distraction to pause their teasing. I was right, our whole house could fit in there several times! The place was huge!
"Hey everyone!" Yaoyorozu greeted us with a wave from a limo, "hop in!"
We all clambered into the limo to take us down the long driveway to the sprawling mansion. Everyone was in complete awe.
"I hope you all found the place okay." Yaoyorozu beamed as the car came to a stop next to a massive fountain spitting water up into the air.
"We're staying the night in a mansion!" Uraraka squealed as Yaoyorozu led us up the glittering front steps. I had no idea how they were glittering because there definitely wasn't glitter in them but they seemed to sparkle in the sunlight.
"I'll have chef prepare us some snacks while you all get settled into your rooms." Yaoyorozu headed toward a massive staircase in the ballroom. They had a ballroom!
"Rooms?" I asked curiously.
"Yes, you can each have your own room for the night." Yaoyorozu said as if it were obvious.
"Oh. I thought people slept in one room during a sleepover." I blushed realizing that I had only gotten my information from movies.
"Oh, well if you all wanted to do that we could stay in my room, it might be a bit of a tight fit but I'm sure we can make it work."
Everyone else nodded and I let out a sigh of relief.
"Alright then." Yaoyorozu smiled before leading us up to her room. As soon as she opened the door I had no idea what she meant about it being a tight fit as her room was bigger than my entire house! Her bed was bigger than my entire bedroom back home, she had to get custom sheets made for it, there was no way any retailer carried sheets in whatever size that was.
"This place is huge!" Ashido yelled, her voice echoing through the massive corridor.
"Ava...whose sweatshirt is that?" Yaoyorozu asked as she glanced over at me causing all the girls to break into giggles.
"Bakugo's!" Toru and Ashido squealed.
"What?! Really?" Yaoyorozu asked in awe, "I always thought he was mean to you."
I felt my face flush with heat, "ah...he's not, really...."
"The locker room incident makes a lot more sense now." Jiro snickered.
"You should have seen them holding hands!" Ashido grinned and everyone else gushed at this.
I somehow managed to survive all their teasing and once we moved past it we had a nice night of studying, a fancy dinner and a to die for dessert before we all piled into Yaoyorozu's massive bed, that easily fit all of us comfortably and watched scary movies.
