The Path That Led To Nowhere
I'm going to tell you a story about a place called Nowhere. It's real—I've been there before. I remember it as if I was there yesterday.
You begin on a path much like the Yellow Brick Road of Oz. It's a bright day. The skies are clear, a royal blue, and the Sun's rays warm the earth with soft kisses of light. The landscape before you is a lush green. Sweet air fills your lungs, and a cool breeze caresses your face. When I found this path, there were animals too—chirping birds, sprinting gazelles and curious bees. I watched the world around me with interest. I could see happiness in people's eyes, I experienced love and friendship. All the while, my legs never tired. I was happy.
After a while, I found myself walking into a storm. A furious tempest from which I could not escape as I was swept into the unknown. In it, I saw horrors. The cutting down of entire forests; the construction of cities and empires. In them, I saw false love and hopes; friendships breaking; betrayal and hate; greed and corruption; the culling of animals. Then, all of a sudden, from the darkness emerged a grey light as the tempest passed. Continuing my journey, I could feel the loss of many resonating in my bones with the cold blanketing my skin. The air was heavier here, the path no longer as maintained as before. The shattered bricks passed through black fields littered with carcasses of trees and animals alike. I crossed polluted rivers and traversed ancient bridges that had once led to Somewhere.
Unfortunately, our time in Somewhere was short as the sins of our past had caught up with us. I'm sure you remember the accomplishments of that time: science; exploration; peace; literature and art; eradication of diseases.
But the tempest lingered, as it always did, waiting to cloud our judgements and poison our hearts with fear.
All signs pointed us in the direction of Nowhere. From where I stood, I could see heavy fog descending upon the path. My vision blurred and my hearing had finally begun to fail me, as if I had aged decades in those few strides. I was Asleep—neither alive nor dead, just present, but I kept on moving.
I don't remember much from my surroundings aside from a cloaked figure standing in my way. He helped me return to you, guiding me past Somewhere and through the tempest, for I was lost. He left me with a note containing directions to Nowhere with the instruction to hand it to you.
And I have.
You'll go there one day, along with the rest of Humanity. We all shall. Death's not was a calling. We are to repent for the destruction we caused.
Nowhere is real—a place once locked away deep in the folds of our minds; now our resting place.
Once upon a time, all roads led to Rome.
Now all roads lead to Nowhere.
The bravery of Humanity cost too much. The consequences of our actions were too great. Begin your journey to Nowhere and lay yourselves to rest in the abyss.
We have sealed our fate.
Here
Lies
Humanity.
