Chapter 48 - Trouble Brewing
Bang!
Bang, bang!
Bang, Bang!
Now that the chamber was empty, I lowered the gun to glare at my target. In my mind, it was whoever made the order to take out Luca and I. We were alive, but they stole my baby.
Tears welled in my eyes. The cramping and bleeding ebbed after a few short days. I couldn't eat, I barely slept but when I did, Luca's arms kept me tucked into his warm comfort. Sometimes Carina snuggle dat my front. We told her about the baby but not why I lost it. The sweet little girl shed tears along with us.
I mourned the loss hard. So did Luca. We shared the same grief. A month later, my sadness had morphed into anger. I wanted whoever was responsible taken out. Most days I stayed in our room. When I did leave, Carina was in bed sleeping for the night and Luca wasn't quite home yet, I came down to his shooting range in the basement. Each bullet that hit the target sank into the person who sent the kill order for my baby.
A glance at the clock showed it was well after ten o'clock. My body ached from exhaustion. Three hours of shooting practice will do that. I put away the gun and its disassembled parts then began my return upstairs.
The hallways were silent and dark. Aza had even gone to bed. No sounds filled the house except for the slight muffled sound of the ocean breeze bending the windows. Even the moonlight was dim. Dark, brooding clouds made their way in from the horizon. A summer storm was brewing off the coast heading inland.
Before heading upstairs, I made a ginger tea. It could steep while I was in the shower. Since the miscarriage, it helped me relax so I could sleep better. Although, I knew I wouldn't sleep until Luca was in bed.
Thunder rumbled, lightning flashed by the time I finished my shower. I leaned against the doorway sipping my tea. I had hoped Luca would be home so I could talk to him about something that had been bothering me that last few days. Since my tea was done, I decided to leave a note for Luca and go to bed.
"Gattina," soft kisses peppered along my shoulder, toward my neck then his voice called my name again. "Gattina, I saw your note."
Luca's arm snaked around my middle, his palm flattening on my belly that still held a slight bulge. His heavy sigh fanned breath passed my ear. I laid my hand on top of his, keeping my eyes closed to fight away the building tears.
Rolling over to face him, Luca's arms loosened to allow the movement then tightened to hold me against his chest. I buried my face in his warmth. Nervous butterflies fluttered in my stomach. I needed him. I needed his touch. His chest swelled as I placed kisses along his pecs. The heavy exhale blew against my hair but I kept going. Luca's fingers curled into my shirt.
"Gattina," his strained voice fell deaf to my ears. I kissed the center of his chest. "Piccola..." Then traveled lower, determination fueling me on. "Madison."
Luca's fingers gripped my arms leaning me back to stare in my eyes. New tears filled my eyes staring into the emerald depths tilting at the sides. He was rejecting me. Again.
"You haven't touched me in a month."
Leaning in, he kissed my forehead. A choked sobbed caught in my throat.
"You know that's not what I mean."
"I-," he sighed. His jaw clenched. "I don't want to hurt you."
"Please," I begged in a whisper. My hand lowered, flattened against the smooth, bare skin of his chest and abs. I slipped it into the front of his boxers. Fingers curling along the hardening length, Luca's eyes closed, lips parted. He groaned as I palmed the shaft until it was stiff in my hand. "I will tell you if it hurts."
Emerald depths flew open and locked onto mine. "Promise?"
"Promise."
Luca lunged for my lips. Our secret mantra of honesty sealed his decision. My body heated for his immediately. I pumped my hand faster encouraging his hips grinding my palm. Luca broke the kiss to move along my jaw in search of the spot on my neck he had always favored.
I nearly came undone when Luca's fingers delved into my core. Writhing beneath him, the knot in my belly tightened. Luca tore away from my neck, disappearing under the sheets and yanked aside my panties. His hot, wet tongue licked, sucked and speared until my release tore from me.
Breathless and grinning, I stretched my arms out basking in the high of this attention from my husband. Tears nearly spilled over but Luca did not give me time. My panties were gone before I could comprehend the motion. Then Luca tugged my shirt upward leaving me bare to his hungry eyes. Sometime during that his boxers disappeared to.
My legs dropped open, wordlessly allowing Luca to settle between. Eyes locked onto mine, he didn't hesitate to sink his length into me. Back arching, I groaned, he sighed as we joined. He found an easy, languid rhythm.
"God, Madison," Luca moaned, locking his lip-s with mine. "I have missed you."
"I ha-ahhh-ave missed you, too," I moaned, arms wrapping around his middle to press him harder to me.
Luca's movement grew harder. He held himself above my on his hands, eyes raking over my naked form to settle on watching where our bodies joined. I glided my palms down his chest, watching where he rocked into me. In, out, in, out and loved the sight.
Cupping his neck, I pulled Luca down to me, eagerly capturing his lips with mine. The action made his thrusts speed. I rocked my hips up to his, groaning against his lips. My legs rose, boxing his hips and dug my heels into him. The knot began to tighten again. Luca suddenly slowed, rolling his hips to mine. His hand cupped my cheek. Emerald depths shimmered with emotion.
"I almost lost you," he whispered.
"I'm still here. Always yours."
Both arms scooped around me, hoisting me upward as Luca sat back. I draped my arms over his shoulders, my eyes never looking away from his. I rode him, lips parted, panting for breath. Groans turned to whimpers, breathy exhales turned to pants for oxygen. Luca's hands held my hips, pulling me harder onto him.
Eyes closed, his mouth dropped open, a throaty groan bubbling from his chest. His hot seed burst within me. My muscles clenched around him, accepting every drop until theknot within my belly snapped. Luca continued to bounce me on his lap, riding out both our releases.
Panting and spent, we collapsed onto the bed still tangled in each others arms and legs. Luca's cheek resting on my chest. My arms wrapped around his back tracing his spine.
"Something happened today," Luca hummed. His hand traced the curve of my side, the other curled under my back.
I frowned. "What happened?"
"A message was delivered." Luca pivoted his face to place soft kisses along my breasts. "Another family is requesting a meeting."
"Which family?" I asked, tilting my head to look at him. "Is it-"
"No," he interjected. "It's not the Gagliano."
"Then who?"
"Cameron O'Connell is who reached out." I frowned, not knowing the significance of that name. "He's the head of an irish family."
"An irish family head is reaching out to an italian one?" I giggled at that. The two never mixed. This had to be a trick.
Luca perched his chin on a hand, eyes meeting mine. There was no humor in them. "We have a common enemy, Madison. They are seeking an alliance to conquer that enemy."
"Who?" I frowned, raking my fingers through his tousled hair.
"Guess."
I thought for a moment then realization dawned on me. "Tommy."
"Yes, Gattina. The O'Connell's wish to arrange a marriage between Carina and Cameron's grandson, Cillian. They are about the same age."
Attempting to wiggle away, I sighed and flopped back onto the bed. "But Carina is barely a child! Luca, how could you agree to this?"
Luca tsk'd me and rose onto his forearms. "It is often done, Madison. This will benefit both our families in defense against the Gagliano's. The marriage proposal is not what bothers me,though."
"What bothers you more than promising your five year old daughter to an enemy family?" I asked, eyebrow quirked.
What bothered me was if Luca was arranging marriages, did he truly change his mind about getting out of this life? Strength through marriage meant longevity, sustaining a family legacy.
"Fist of all," Luca pursed his lips. "It was your father's idea. Secondly, Luke delivered the message adding that O'Connell was insistent you be there. Something about wanting your approval as well. His wife wants to meet you."
"Do you think it's a setup?" I asked softly, stroking his jawline. Fear flashed in his eyes.
Luca nodded slowly. I fear it is a trap. I cannot lose you, Madison."
"I worry more about losing Carina."
Ohh man, what a day!
