04 :: Bridge

The alarm on my phone beeped with a vibration, breaking my sleep with a sudden strike. Like everyone else, I despised waking up but that wasn't the case today. I decided to check the accident's location today because although the police may find a junior detective student's words uncanny, I have a strong faith on Detective Park's words.

If he said that something dropped in the river, then it did. And even if it didn't, checking once wasn't that bad.

I got ready to leave. The earlier I get on work, the less difficult will it be to deal the mass cameras.

It was just 5:00 am in the morning, and most people would be asleep right now. So should be Yeonjun, but he was nowhere to be seen. I pulled on his duvet to see if he was sleeping like a baby, snuggled up in a foetus.

But much to my surprise, it wasn't so. He was actually up and not on his bed. Noona couldn't be calling him at this hour.

"Did he leave already?" I mumbled to myself and packed my bag. He was quite busy with the documents yesterday. Mr. Jung had rang him up at midnight, asking him to try to complete the post mortem report but just how he had said, all the evidences that we had, was some mere finger prints and photos. The actual corpse went to the National investigation agency.

I heaved a deep sigh and opened the door of our shared bedroom and started walking towards the kitchen when I noticed Yeonjun, sitting on the couch in the living room, working on something on his laptop.

He, as usual, was dressed in some sweatpants and tees but his prescribed glasses, topped his messy morning look like some cherry.

"Hey! Busy?" I asked.

"Mhm." He hummed, sparing no glances at me.

"Okay. I'm going out. Hopefully be back before 9:00 am." I said, proceeding to the door. He removed his glasses and turned to look at me with a question mark on his face.

"You're going out? Where? It's not even sunrise yet."

"I know. You read the news, right? I'm going to the spot to look into the river." I put on my shoes as I informed him.

"What? The accident spot? Are you insane or what? Don't you think there can be journalists already and you going there, alone, can make you seem sus?" He got up from his position to reach me.

"Well..."

"You didn't think of it, did you? How will you be a detective if you aren't concerned about your own investigatory methods?"

"Aah! C'mon, it's okay, okay?"

"It's not. Wait a sec. I'll come with you."

"But you're busy." I immediately stopped him.

"I don't know if I'm busy or being forced to work like an ass. How am I supposed to get the post mortem without the body? And Mr. Jung won't stop bothering me. Now the investigation department has cancelled the case because they proved that it's a 'suicide' with no abnormalities." He complained about his condition.

"But that doesn't feel so."

"Ikr. That doesn't. So we're just going wherever you're going. If Park Y/n is right, we will find a body or a head. And there's a heavy chance for the killer to be there too. We're taking my gun." He wore his jacket over his messy clothes and took his gun along.

I didn't stop him nor argue with him. When it was his hard time, I hadn't let him be alone for even a moment. And now that he is actually equipped with weapons, he is a practical asset for me.

We started driving towards the highway but the bridge-road wasn't what our destination wanted. We had to take a whole turn over and use the other road to reach the river bank.

Yeonjun was driving us since I'm quite unfamiliar to the short cuts. Luckily it wasn't much rush yet and we could speed up on the road.

We stopped at the side of the road, near a convenience store and decided to go on foot. Taking the car any further, would make it difficult to make turns later.

"Careful, it's stiff." I reminded Yeonjun about his restless self and started climbing down the elevated road. We wandered around the river, trying to watch out for anything.

Yeonjun caged his eyes with his hands to prevent direct contact with the rising sun while I squinted my eyes to have a better focus on everything.

There seemed nothing unusual, pretty much how it is on any other day, until I spotted a woman. She was pretty tall, compared to the average height of women. She wore a brick red, full sleeves turtle neck and a crimson over coat. Her hair neatly hung over her shoulders with a beret hat of yet another shade of red. Her face was covered with a matching face mask and red cat eye sunglasses. Just her porcelain pale legs were visible to the eyes.

"Hey! Come here. You see that woman?" I pointed at the lady as I pulled Yeonjun behind the piller. She stood on the other side of the bridge pillars, next to a huge slab of broken concrete, right under where the bridge broke after the accident.

"Hmm..." He hummed in response.

"That's Y/n, right?" I asked.

"Y/n? How?" Inquired Yeonjun.

"You see her knees? Right above her high stockings?"

"I do."

"There's a gash cut. Remember the news report said that her knees got bruised?" I said.

"Yeah I do. But there's no specification that only Y/n can get cut and be here. Why are we waiting? Should we go and confront her?" I looked at Yeonjun with a baffled face. How can someone as intelligent as him suddenly suggest such a stupid idea?

"Stupid, are you? What will we confront her about? It's an open public place, anyone has the right to be here." I retorted.

"Right... I forgot." He confessed. I gave him a judgemental stare and turned back towards the woman but she was gone from where she once stood.

"Where did she go?" I asked, still trying to find that mysterious woman in red.

"Whom are you searching?"

"You're actually dumb! That woman in re-" I turned to look at the direction of the voice and choked to see the one we were talking of, right next to me. Her face rested on her hands, that she used as a support. She had removed her mask to show a sheepish grin on her wine red lips.

"Hyung!" I searched for my brother behind me but realised he was long gone from behind me.

"Yeonjun?!" I whisper screamed his name as the woman clenched on my pastel blue shirt.

"You were prying over me, huh?" Her voice came as a whisper, that was soft yet evil.

"Prying? Wh-why would I pry over you. I... I was just appreciating your beauty, madam." I blurted.

"My beauty? Here, under this bridge?"

"I mean... It's not usual for me to see pretty women here at this hour in all formals."

"And who am I, did you say?" She enquired me and my heart ran a frightful race.

"Umm..."

"Soobin Choi..." She started taking her sunglasses off to meet me with her eyes.

"You have got some keen eyes. No wonder you're the valedictorian. You guessed it correct." She opened her sunglasses to reveal her soft tone, hooded, cat eyes.

"Yes, I'm Y/n." She let go off my collar and I moved away from her. I gulped and brushed my outfit when Yeonjun finally came out of his hideout.

"Now, bless me with the reason of your unwanted presence here." She said, turning away to look back at the still water.

"We'd like you to explain that to us first. You attacked me as if you didn't already know my identity." I scoffed.

"Tch! Don't scoff at me. It wasn't the best of you both to be here when you'll be behaving like some wet kittens. The reason for you to be here is exactly the same why I'm here." She said.

"You're here to look for that body you told the police?" I asked.

"Yes. The police has closed Anhyun's case. I took some burst shots in panic. The photos prove the consider face to be Jo Bumjoon's." She handed me her phone and I looked at the blurry photos. Indeed her description to the police was precise. The face was partially burnt and had metallic chain marks, which couldn't be understood much. Got to say her camera is good.

"So..." Yeonjun started.

"The probable body is there." I noticed the lump like structure near the other side, soon after spotting her.

"Where?" She asked.

"There." I dipped my feet inside the cold water and tried to reach the body. I couldn't swim and the river was quite deep. So it was much troublesome for me to even get closer to the thing I spotted.

"Soobin-ah! Wait, let me do that." Yeonjun swam across the shallows of the river and grabbed the body to pull it back to us.

Y/n opened her bag and took out a towel, as if she was already ready for getting wet.

"Thanks." Yeonjun took the towel and all of us squatted to check the body.

"Shit!" I cursed under my breath at the horrible condition of the body that lay near our feet. It was brutally stabbed before being stroke by some hot metal. They dragged the corpse with chains while he was still alive, because his fingers were stuck under the metal while his hand rested on his body.

"That cannot be a suicide." Whispered Y/n.

"It isn't I'm sure. I'm even straight on fact that Anhyun didn't die of self harm." I proclaimed.

"Hey, you think that too?" She looked at me.

"What? Of course I do."

"And... Weren't you the leader of her post mortem team? What happened to that?" She directed her question towards Yeonjun.

"I was but the corpse is not with us. They even closed the case and we couldn't deduce anything. Except! Except of the finger prints on her body."

"Fingerprints? What prints? Do you know who they belong to?" She asked.

"I haven't checked on my files yet. That's what I was doing before coming here. I think I read her boyfriend's name or something." Replied Yeonjun.

"But he was with me all the time." She mumbled to herself.

"Can we see that now? Your phone? Can't that help?" I suggested. He took out his phone and texted in his group chat.

They resent him the results once more as he checked through them to look for the finger prints' results.

"Anything?" I asked, peeping on his screen.

"Hmm. There were 7 finger prints on her body." He informed us.

"Proceed please." I retorted.

"These belong to Lee Yohan, Cha Junghoon, Ku Changmin, Lee Jaechan, Jung Seokmin, Jo Bumjoon and Min Soonhee." He read out the names.

"What? This guy also? How?" I was confused by the finger prints identities.

"Wait, Ku Changmin and Lee Jaechan?  Junghoon is her boyfriend so..." Said Y/n.

"Junghoon is her boyfriend? But isn't she already engaged to Lee Yohan?" Asked Yeonjun.

"Who's Lee Yohan? The business tycoon?"

"Yeah. That's what I meant when I said I read her boyfriend's name."

"Wait, Wait, this is a mess." I tried to stop the commotion when my phone buzzed. I opened the message box to see Beomgyu to be the intruder.

"What?" I balled my eyes out.

"What?" The other two looked at me.

"Lee Yohan, the business tycoon died yesterday."
