Smile for me

Cloie exhaled a breath of hot air into her hands and patiently waited at their promised rendezvous point. It had been two days since her date with Doug and there were no signs of him appearing tonight either. She sighed in disappointment, wondering if he changed his mind about meeting with her.

"Maybe I got a little ahead of myself..." She murmured sadly and exhaled again. "I mean... It's not like I'm his girlfriend, right? We just had one little date. That's all."

Just as she thought this and prepared to leave, a hooded figure sprinted towards the fence and grabbed her arm through the bars. Cloie gasped and looked over her shoulder to see Doug out of breath. His ivory-colored hoodie was splattered with spots of red, which she assumed was blood by the smell of it.

She turned to face him and waited until he caught his breath. Doug seemed really tired.

"Doug, are you okay? What happened?" Cloie notioned towards the blood on his clothes.

"Hah? Oh, you mean this? I was just finishing some work." He explained with a light shrug. His eyes darted around as if he was on alert. Even more than usual. Cloie watched him silently as his eyes scanned the darkness.

"Let's hide before someone sees us." He suggested. Without waiting for an approval, he nodded to the top of the fence. "Move outta the way. I'm coming in to get'cha out."

"O-Oh. Okay..." Cloie mumbled uneasily and stepped a couple of feet away from the fence.

Craning her neck and looking up at the tall iron wall in front of her, she watched as the Twilight effortlessly jumped up and landed on the top, before landing on the ground beside her. Cloie's eyes went wide. She knew he could jump high but she never saw him doing it before. Her eyes were closed when he gave her that piggyback ride.

Doug picked her up, causing her to yelp in surprise, and carried her back out the same way. She had her arms wrapped around his neck and her eyes would look at anywhere but the ground beneath her. He didn't put her down when he landed on the opposite side of the fence but ran as far from the mansion as he could.

The two ended up in the same roof where they had first met. Doug glanced around him, his fingers curling and digging into her skin as if he was expecting someone to jump out and grab her from him. Cloie didn't understand why he was so tense. She didn't understand why he brought her here of all places. But she didn't question him and instead just waited for him to calm down.

When he finally relaxed and looked back at her, he started to frown. "You aren't gonna ask me what I was doing?" He asked as he placed her back down.

"You said you were finishing some work earlier." She answered him.

Doug blinked, then slowly narrowed his eyes. "You aren't gonna ask me what my work was? Or why I'm acting all weird?" He questioned again. "I mean you don't know much about Twilights or what we do. I figured you'd be more curious."

Again, she answered back with the same naive attitude. "I don't want to pry about what it is you do. If you don't wanna share it to me willingly then you don't have to."

Doug was left speechless after hearing her answer. He expected her to be her usual annoying self. Cloie was definitely different tonight. Much different.

It wasn't like she knew about his job or anything about what Twilights were usually hired for in the city, so what gives? Does she just not care what he does? Or the fact that he had blood stains on his clothes?

"Are you alright, Doug?" She asked worriedly, touching his forehead. "It's pretty chilly outside right now. Running around this late at night might make you sick."

The way his scowl deepened made her flinch. Maybe that was a bad thing to say? She wished she could take it back but...too late.

"Ow oww OWWW!" She whined as he pinched her cheek.

"Stop being such a damn hypocrite. You're the one who's going to get sick from staying outside in the cold. How long were you even standing around in that spot for? You're face is fucking freezing!" He scoffed and pinched her other cheek, stretching them both to make her face wide and weird looking.

"Ahm sowwee, Dahg..!" She cried.

"Yeah, you better be." He clicked his tongue. "I'm gonna be seriously pissed if I find out that you end up dying because you stayed outside waiting for me."

"Ehh? Talk abow aggwesibly kewing!" She retorted. "Dahg wett gooowwww!! Mah cheeksh hewtsss!"

Seeing her weirdly formed face talking made him widen his eyes. His shoulders began to shake visibly as he bit his lip to keep himself from laughing.

"Dahg ish nut fanny!!!" Cloie yelled as her cheeks began to redden.

"Pffffttbbb...ahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!" As Doug doubled over and began to laugh, Cloie massaged her swollen cheeks while pouting at him. She wasn't mad at him.

Okay. Maybe a little mad.

However seeing the bright smile on his face took away all the anger. Cloie stared at him and realized...how much she loved seeing that wonderful smile. Even though he was technically laughing at her, that damn sadist.

"Hey," She called, gently nudging her foot against his back as he rolled over the floor laughing. Doug took a deep breath and looked up at her, eyes shining brightly like a little boy having the time of his life. Cloie smiled. "You should smile more... Your smile is amazing."

Her voice was so soft like a whisper. Doug felt his heart pound wildly in his chest as he heard those words. He felt embarrassed and yet so happy at the same time. Why was that? Surely, he hadn't developed any feelings for this Normal.

But, even so, Doug found himself smiling more each date.
