What he knows
Several weeks have gone by and Cloie gradually became closer with the Twilight. Their secret dates started out with meeting at the blind spot by the gates whenever Doug had free time to visit her, then the visits became more frequent and he started coming over almost every other night. After that he became a nightly visitor.
Cloie rested her head against his shoulder as she watched the lights of the city paint the atmosphere with vivid hues of neon colors. The night was particularly colder than usual and she had to wrap her arms around herself to keep warm. A cloud of mist formed when she exhaled and huddled closer to the mercenary.
He tilted his head to get a glimpse of her face and widened his eyes when he saw that she was turning pale. Normals are so weak, he thought.
Taking off his hoodie and leaving him in a plain black shirt, he slipped the garment over her head and scoffed lightly. "Next time bring a jacket or something. We've done this like a dozen times already and you still keep forgetting." He flicked her forehead to show his irritation.
"Ow! Sorry, jeez!" She huffed and held a hand to the stinging spot.
Even though Doug had a kind side to him, he had a very weird way of showing it.
There were two sides to him that Cloie had seen so far and it took some time to get used to the personality change from one to the other. Although they never had been in danger while they were together, she would see him switch from his normal personality to his Twilight personality when he sensed something nearby.
The normal Doug would make fun of her, pinch her cheeks whenever he got annoyed, smile while they told stories about their lives, and even laugh if he found something amusing. Cloie liked this side to Doug, even though his kindness was a little bit aggressive.
This Doug was fun to be around and he told stupid jokes that made her cringe. This Doug was childish but not immature. This Doug was playful but never placed her in harm's way.
She would notice him smiling at her whenever she tried to make him laugh or how relaxed he was whenever he knew they were safe and just alone together in each other's company. He would just sit there with her on the rooftops and listen to her rant about her family problems - even inserting a comment once in a while when he found it necessary.
This was one side of Doug that Cloie grew to love each date.
As the night stretched on and the sounds of gunfire reached their ears, the two got up and decided that it was a good time as any to leave. Cloie gasped when he effortlessly lifted her up and began retracing his steps, jumping from roof to roof going back to her home.
"Keep your head down," he told her.
There were screams coming from somewhere close by and he hurried his pace to get her to safety. She didn't need to get herself involved in Twilight affairs. Normals like her don't belong in that kind of cruel world.
As he glided over the fence and set her back down on the ground, Doug was once again reminded of how different their lifestyles were. Sometimes he wondered to himself why he still kept coming over to meet her.
"Thank you, Doug..."
Her voice brought him back from his thoughts and he looked up to see her smiling at him.
"It's nothing," He shrugged nonchalantly. "No point in getting you caught in that sort of business."
"No, not that, silly!" She laughed as quietly as she could manage so that they wouldn't be found out by the guards.
"Then for what, if I may ask?" A voice spoke up from the shadows and the two froze.
Soft footsteps sounded from around the corner and there stood James with a disapproving frown on his face. His eyes were trained on the Twilight in front of him as he held out his hand towards the young miss.
"Cloie, step away from him and come here." He strictly ordered. When he saw that she wouldn't move, he sighed in disappointment. "I have been wondering for a while now why your feet were always so dirty in the morning, and your pajamas look like you've been crawling through the ground."
She hung her head in shame and was unable to look at him in the eyes. James was suspicious of her and she wasn't even aware of it, risking both her and Doug in danger.
A clicking sound caught her attention and she looked up to see James aiming a gun towards Doug. Her eyes widened in fear and her blood turned cold. She didn't want anyone to get hurt.
"Doug," she gasped, turning to the freckled Twilight beside her as he took out his blade.
He didn't look scared of the gun pointed at his head. From the way he positioned his body close to hers and the protective arm blocking her from the danger, she knew he was more nervous of the bullet hitting her instead.
"Drop your weapon now, Normal." He spat his words venomously, teeth bared in an angry snarl. It was almost as if he was challenging James to shoot without getting both his hands cut off a second later.
Cloie watched anxiously as neither of them refused to back down. After another minute or so, James broke the silence with a question.
"What were you planning to do with the young miss?" He asked, gun still pointed at the Twilight's forehead.
Doug raised an eyebrow at the question, puzzled that the man would even bother to ask that to a mercenary. For all he cared, people like him would assume that he was planning on killing her on the spot. This was definitely a bit surprising on his part.
"Nothing," he replied. "We were just out on a little date. Why, do I need your permission for it?"
Upon hearing his answer and seeing no detection of a lie in his stoic expression, James slowly lowered his weapon and placed it back in its holster. He looked at Cloie and nodded towards the back door, gesturing for her to head back into her room.
She nodded, sadly glancing at Doug from the corner of her eye. He watched her leave after muttering a quiet goodbye and turned back to the bodyguard with his blade still in his hand.
"Not gonna call for backup?" He inquired, head tilted to the side with a smirk on his lips. "Don't get cocky. I can easily cut you in half, you know."
James responded by rolling his eyes and turning away to leave, shocking the younger male as he merely dismissed him with a wave of his hand. He stopped near the door and glanced at the Twilight with a scrutinizing gaze.
"If you're going to be bringing the young miss out at night..." James sighed, raising an eyebrow and frowning at him. "Then please be sure to let her bring a jacket."
After that he went back in the building and left the confused mercenary outside with his jaw hanging open.
