24. The misunderstanding

Clara Carter

To turn in my assignment, I stroll down the corridor to Ms. Ovando's cabin. Although there is still time to submit the assignment, I decide to do so. That way, over the break, I'll have more free time and may be able to see Stefan.

I notice a familiar face outside Ms. Ovando's cabin, speaking with a girl. Casing the girl between him and the wall is a rather better choice of words.

As I got closer, I recognize the face.

"Jack!" This is something I say with a sour glee. "Has it been a while?''

Both of them are taken aback and pull a step back from one another. He's trying to date a different girl, just as I predicted.

He swallows and runs his fingers through his hair.

"Listen, I'm not going to you entertain you—"

"Oh, Jack, come on." I give him a friendly but hard punch on the arm. "Do you still think I'm going to beat your ass up?"

In front of his new girl, his ears turn red with shame, and wrath surges in his eyes. However, he is aware of the outcomes of our previous encounters. As a result, he remains silent while I continue.

The girl, on the other hand, is staring at us in bewilderment. I can tell she has no idea who I am by the perplexed expression on her face.

"Don't be afraid if you are." My voice may seem sweet as honey, but everyone in the room can hear how mocking it is. "I've come to express my gratitude."

The last statement has a disturbingly genuine tone to it. It wasn't my aim to make it sound nice, but I couldn't help myself.

They both look at me in disbelief.

"For what do you thank me?" As he asks, Jack finally finds his voice.

I chuckle as I recall the day these boys dared Stefan to break into my house and call me a bitch. How am I supposed to forget about that?

"You don't deserve to know that."

I stomp my feet, acknowledging the color fade from Jack's face. I turn back towards them before I can leave them alone again.

"By the way," I add, staring at the girl, who is still perplexed by what has just happened. "Be prepared for heartbreak soon. If my calculations are correct, you could be the zillionth girl to be dumped by this jerk."

I leave them behind and continue walking. I overhear some of their mumblings and cursing, and the next thing I know, the jerk is getting a hard, ear-ringing slap on the face.

As I spin 180 degrees back to gaze at Jack's crimson, angry face, I let out a satisfied laugh that echoes down the corridor. He puts his hand on his cheek where the girl hits him.

"You'll regret this, you fucking bitch!"

Jack was a complete asshole, everyone is aware about that among the people who know him well. But for girls who doesn't, he seemed like a great guy with looks and charm.

I bite my tongue to keep from laughing, but a few giggles escape, enraging him even more.

I raise my middle finger at him.

"Suck on this."

I knock on Ms. Ovando's door carelessly, hear some shuffling, and don't give a damn. Before she can invite me, I barge in.

My legs abruptly come to a halt in their track. The scene in front of me catches my breath inside my throat.

Stefan is behind the desk, his side profile visible to me. Kate is on her knees, her blonde head fairly seen.

"What the fuck is going on here?"

Both of them frantically turn their heads in my direction. Kate hides her smile under a worried look. Stefan, on the other end, is in a state of embarrassment.

He walks around the desk and towards me.

"It's not what you think, Clara,"  He goes into detail about it. "It was merely a random coincidence,"

To break Kate's smirking face, I already had my fist balled to my side. It's as though she purposefully did it.

"I was walking by when Ms. Ovando approached me and requested my assistance in packing her belongings," he adds, his gaze fixed on me.

"What exactly are you packing?"

My tone is harsher than I'd like it to be.

"A few of my possessions," Kate gives a confident response. "In case you're wondering, today is my last day at college. I've been chosen to appear in an advertisement."

Is it possible that this woman is insane? She has only been here for two months and is already planning to go. In any case, it's beneficial to me.

"Yes," Stefan says as he connects the dots for me. "She was only picking up her spectacles that had fallen at my feet as I was turning away."

I take a deep breath and tilt my head back. So I'm supposed to believe this woman chooses her spectacles while kneeling?

Stefan's face alters as he stares back at Kate inquisitively as if he's realizing it with something so simple as that.

So he's not without common sense.

Kate rushes to put on her spectacles and clears her throat, as she's been caught in the limelight.

"How did you end up here, Clara?"

To kick your ass!

Her intentions with Stefan had always been a source of suspicion for me even if this combination of jealousy and rage is still alien to me.

I mumbled, not wanting to make a scene.

"It's time to turn in the assignment."

"Oh," she replies, faking a sad look. "Give it to me for the time being. I'll forward it to your new lecturer, whoever he or she is."

She settles into her chair and takes a sip of her coffee. Stefan takes a small step away from me, bending his head like he's some child.

I glare at him even if he isn't staring me in the eyes. Whatever emotion I felt when I saw him in that situation with Kate is still prominent in my mind. It doesn't matter to me what this sensation is.

The fact I didn't appreciate it is all that matters. I didn't like it, whether it was an accident or an intended accident.

Kate sets her coffee on the desk and extends her hand, requesting the file I'm currently holding.

I stomp towards her desk, still unable to control my rage at her smirking expression.

I keep the file on my side of the table and deliberately push it towards the coffee cup.

As I watch the coffee spill like a fountain on Kate's pencil skirt and some of her red top, a wicked smile spreads across my lips. Oops.

She stands up and pushes the chair behind her, unsure of what just happened. She shoots me a death glare and undoubtedly curses me from within.

I scoff.

She would die only by hearing all the curses I've said for her in my mind.

"Are you crazy?"

Stefan shuts his eyes and exhales deeply as if he knows exactly what I'm thinking. He eyes me with warning as he runs his fingers through his hair. I smile.

Kate snarls, "I've had enough of your crap." It's difficult to tell if her hatred is directed at me or her destroyed clothes.

She continues, pointing a finger at me, "Tomorrow," I fold my hands over my chest, letting her speak further.

"Bring your parents to the Dean's office."
