I Take Everything Back.

IT was dark in Yuri's room as she lay in her bed, scrolling through TikTok. There was everything and nothing on her mind. She was thinking of Jungwon, she was thinking of her biological mother, she was thinking of school, she was thinking of Sunghoon, she was thinking of ice skating — Yuri was thinking of everything and nothing at the same time. The nothingness filled up her mind like ink spilled in a backpack, you're unaware of the spillage, but it's there, waiting for you to find it.

TikTok wasn't helping Yuri keep her mind of Jungwon. Curse Yuri for being on K-Pop TikTok. Why did she think it was a good idea to make her way onto K-Pop TikTok? Now every second TikTok was of ENHYPEN. Groaning, Yuri turns off her phone and slides it beneath her pillow, she really didn't want to deal with another TikTok praising Jungwon when all she wants to do is tear his apart like he did with hers.

Yuri's door opens and her step-mom, Kim Yeiji, enters the room, closing the door gently behind her. "I thought you were at work," Yuri says quietly.

"I'm on my lunch break," Yeiji responds, "do you mind?" Yeiji gestures to the bed and Yuri slides over, making room for her step-mom to slide beneath the covers as well. Yeiji brushes Yuri's hair away from her face and kisses her forehead, "well, you have no fever."

Yuri scoffs, "of course I don't — I have a headache, they're two different things, mom."

Yeiji sighs and Yuri frowns, "you don't like me calling you mom?" (Yuri doesn't think she'll be able to take another heartbreak).

Yeiji chuckles, "no, no," she reassures the girl, "I've been dreaming of you calling me 'mom' ever since your father married me!"

"Well, why did you respond like that?" Yuri asks.

"Are you calling me mom because you want to, or are you calling me mom just to prove something to your real mom and father?"

Yuri snorts, "what would I have to prove to them? I have nothing to prove to them."

"You want to prove that what you said last night was true — that I'm more of a mother to you than Hye-Bin will ever be," Yeiji states firmly, removing her hand from Yuri's face. "I don't think you believe that, sweetheart, I think you're still holding onto the hope that Hye-Bin comes back to you."

"Mo — Yeiji," it hurt Yuri more to call her step-mom by her real name, "no one seems to understand me. I thought you would, but here you are, trying to tell me what I should feel."

Yeiji's silent. Her eyes watching Yuri.

"I want to call you mom because you are my mom. Hye-Bin was my mom. I'm aware. But she lost that title when she abandoned me, okay? She doesn't deserve my forgiveness because if she truly cared about me, if she truly believed and wanted to be my mother, she would've kept in contact. Everything she did was her choice. She chose to leave. She chose to cut all contact. She chose to leave behind her daughter who loved her more than anything else in the world — and now she's choosing to enter my life when I don't want her in my life anymore. Look, Yeiji, I think it's you. You don't want to be called mom because that's taking away Hye-Bin's title, but understand this; I don't care. You're my mom, and no one can do anything about it. You can't change my mind, my dad can't change my mind and my — Hye-Bin — certainly can't change my mind."

Yeiji's eyes were wet with tears and she chuckles, "when did you become so mature? And wise? What happened to the Yuri I knew at the beginning of the year?"

Yuri shrugs, "a lot happened that made me this way."

Yeiji falls silent. She knows who Yuri was referring to — Jungwon. "We'll talk about him later, sweetie, but for now, I'm here to talk about Hye-Jin."

Yuri frowns, "did dad send you?"

"No, I came on my own accord — Yuri, I think I understand you know. You don't want to forgive Hye-Bin because you believe she's soley here just to receive forgiveness that will make her feel better about her actions. Am I correct?"

        Yuri grins at Yeiji, "exactly!"

Yeiji sighs heavily, her mind whizzing. She reaches for Yuri's hand. "She came back for a reason, Yuri, and I won't tell you it because you've already suffered enough, but just know that I believe that your reasoning for her being here is correct — don't tell your father I said that, will you? He's over the moon Hye-Bin's back and it's kinda shaken me."

Yuri frowns and squeezes Yeiji's hand.

"My father left me at your age, Yuri," Yeiji begins, "and I still resent him to this day."

"But — you recieve gifts from him on your birthday?"

Yeiji nods her head, "that's right. I do."

"You forgave him? What? I'm so confused right now," Yuri's head hurts. What was Yeiji trying to tell her?

"No," Yeiji responds, "I didn't forgive him."

Yuri was at a loss for words.

"I don't think I'll ever forgive him, but one night, my older sister convinced me to have a dinner with him and attempt to hear out his side of the story. So I did, thought it was bullshit, but in the end I told myself I still wanted him in my life — I would get extra presents and money from him — and so I decided to be civil with him. I never forgave him, but I decided to be civil with him. Do you know what I said when he apologized to me?"

"Did you say 'Fuck off old man,' and punch him?" Yuri asks with wide hopeful eyes.

Yeiji laughs, "I wish! I said 'I appreciate your apology'. I never said 'I accept.'"

Yuri gasps, "you are so clever, Yeiji! We have the original girlboss right here!"

Yeiji laughs and squeezes Yuri's hand, "look, go have dinner with your mother. Do it for your father, for Hanuel, for your brothers. Listen to her side of the story, but don't accept her apology. Only you can decide whether or not you want to forgive her, and, if you don't, tell yourself you'll at least remain civil with Hye-Bin. Think of all the presents she'll buy to make it up to you, yeah?"

Yuri doesn't think she's hugged anyone tighter before. "I love you, Yeiji."

Yeiji hugs Yuri back, "I love you more. And call me 'mom,' — only if you want."

Yuri laughs, "did you forget what I said before? You're my only mom, Yeiji."

Pulling away, Yeiji caresses Yuri's face, "I'm proud of you, sunshine, don't ever forget that."

Yuri's heart swells in her chest. No one's told her that in ages. "I love you, mom."

Someone's finally proud of Yuri and suddenly the weight of the world falls off her shoulders.
