― chapter 37.

❝ that's not the point, dumbass. ❞

"YOU'RE KIDDING."

Miguel shook his head, grabbing Ayane as she lost her balance for a moment.

"Dead serious. I'll spare you the rest of what she said, 'cause you'll probably get pissed."

Ayane quickly looked up at him. "What'd she say?"

Miguel shook his head again, pulling Ayane along the skating rink.

"Don't worry about it."

"Miguel," Ayane said sternly. "What. Did she. Say?"

Miguel sighed, glancing away.

"She was basically just flirting. A lot."

Ayane clenched her jaw, not realizing how hard she was squeezing Miguel's hand.

"Ayane- ow!"

She pulled her hand away. "Sorry," she muttered, glancing down.

Ayane was going to tell Tory to back off. And if she had to kick her ass to do it, then that's what Ayane would do.

She skated back over to the exit, pulling off her roller skates and throwing them aside. Ayane had her eyes directly on Tory, and she walked right up to her.

"Ayane!" Miguel called after her, scurrying out of the rink and following her.

Tory was serving some people, but Ayane did not care.

"Hey Tory," Ayane spat, crossing her arms.

At once, Tory turned around, looking down at the girl.

"I'm busy."

"I don't care," Ayane quickly shot back. "You need to stay the fuck away from my boyfriend before I kick your ass a third time. Got it?"

Miguel ran up at that moment, grabbing Ayane by her arms.

"Come on, don't let her get to you," Miguel muttered, but Ayane shrugged him off.

Tory smirked, looking Ayane up and down. "What happened to not wanting to be enemies?"

Ayane scoffed, smiling cynically.

"Yeah, that was before you showed how fucking crazy you are. This is your last chance. Back off."

Tory arched an eyebrow, still smirking.

"Why, are you scared that I might actually succeed in stealing your boyfriend?"

Ayane immediately reacted, smacking the tray up in Tory's hand and sending food flying all over her.

There were gasps, people looking over to see what was going on.

"Ayane!" Miguel grabbed her as Ayane was in mid punch, stopping her from beating Tory's ass.

"What's going on?" A man came over, wearing a shirt that said Security.

Tory shot a look at Ayane. "She just- assaulted me out of nowhere."

"You lying bitch!" Ayane squirmed in Miguel's arms, trying to get out of his grip.

"Alright, get out!" the man said, pointing to the door.

Ayane did not bother to protest. She was glad to be leaving, actually. Tory smirked at Ayane one last time, a look that made Ayane shake with anger.

Miguel dragged her outside, and a few moments later, Robby and Sam came rushing out there.

"Hey, what happened?" Sam asked, frowning.

Ayane paced the concrete ground furiously, trying to calm herself down.

"That crazy bitch is what happened," Ayane spat, running a hand through her hair.

Robby frowned, then noticed Miguel standing there.

"I don't suppose you had anything to do with this, did you?" he asked, taking a step toward Miguel.

Miguel looked at him, visibly angered. "I didn't," he replied defensively, stepping closer to Robby.

"Just like you didn't know anything about the medal?" Robby shot back, curling his hands into fists.

Ayane frowned. "The medal? I-I thought Hawk took the medal."

"He did," Miguel replied, not taking his eyes off of Robby. "Keene just doesn't know what the hell he's talking about."

"I think I do," Robby replied, "you aren't as innocent as you want Ayane to think."

Miguel's hand twitched, and for a moment Ayane could see that he was close to hitting Robby.

Ayane shook her head, wildly confused.

"I don't know what you guys are talking about, but I just want to go home," she finally said, huffing.

"I'll take you home," Miguel said, stepping away from Robby with one last glare.

Ayane looked at Sam. "You guys go enjoy the rest of your night. I'll see you in a bit."

Sam finally nodded, taking Robby by his arm and pulling him back inside.

Turning back to Miguel, Ayane said, "You should have just let me kick her ass."

Miguel frowned. "Ayane, you can't just keep beating people up in public places! This is like, the third time you've done it!"

She looked up at Miguel with a frown on her face.

"Can you never side with me on anything, anymore?"

Miguel rolled his eyes. "Believe me, I completely side with you on everything. I just want you to realize that there are consequences for doing things like that."

Ayane scoffed. "What are you, my mother?" She turned and began walking away.

"Where are you going?" Miguel called, sighing.

"You're taking me home, right?" Ayane called back, turning her head and giving him a sour look.

Miguel rolled his eyes again, finding the car keys and unlocking the car.

Ayane got in without a word. She was quiet as Miguel drove along, her arms crossed and staring out of the window.

He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. At once, Miguel reached over and flipped on the radio. Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight was playing.

"You know this song?" Miguel asked, trying to lighten the tension.

Ayane glanced over at him. "Yeah," she replied dryly, shifting in the passenger seat.

Miguel smiled a little, singing along to the song softly. Ayane looked over at him, still trying to be mad but failing.

"You look like you want to sing along," he said, earning an eye roll from Ayane.

"No, I don't-"

"Yes you do," Miguel persisted in a singsong voice. "Come on. You know the words, right?"

Ayane bit her inner lip to try to keep herself from smiling, watching Miguel be a dumbass as he turned the music up loud and sang along in a very bad, pitchy voice.

"The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows, it's no stranger to you and me!"

Ayane laughed, shaking her head as Miguel hit his hands along to the drum part on the steering wheel.

For the rest of the ride, they screamed the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

Miguel pulled up to the LaRusso's as the song ended, putting the car in park and taking a breath.

He and Ayane both laughed for a moment, leaning closer to each other until their lips met.

Ayane finally pulled away, saying, "Have I ever taught you kata?"

Miguel gave her a look, perplexed. "Uh... what's that?"

She slowly smiled, unbuckling her seatbelt.

"Come on."

Miguel shut off the engine at once, following Ayane out of the car. She took his hand, leading him to the dojo.

"Is this gonna be some of your ballet routine or something?"

Ayane turned to him, narrowing her eyes.

"Stand right here, dummy."

Miguel complied, allowing Ayane to adjust him. She stepped back, facing him.

"Okay. Now, close your eyes."

"Oh, no," Miguel said, "I don't trust you."

Ayane scoffed, holding her hands to her chest.

"Bite me." She rolled her eyes. "Close your eyes."

Miguel sighed, closing his eyes at once.

"Alright, this is called Miyagi kata. Take a deep breath, and imagine you have an opponent in front of you."

He kept his eyes closed, nodding at once.

"Okay. What do I do now, pretend to fight them?"

Ayane made a face. "Well, essentially... yes. Look, just act like you're throwing a strike at someone."

Miguel was currently imagining his 'opponent' as Robby Keene, though he didn't share that with Ayane.

He threw a jab punch to the air. Ayane laughed a little, and Miguel opened his eyes.

"What?"

Ayane smiled a little. "Nothing, it's just- you're supposed to do it slowly, like you're meditating while you're doing it."

Miguel squinted. "How is this supposed to help me in a fight?"

She rolled her eyes, taking a step back.

"I'll show you. I'm gonna close my eyes, and you try to attack me."

Miguel raised an eyebrow, finally shrugging. "Alright."

Ayane closed her eyes at once, turning slowly in a circle. She focused on where Miguel was, sensing him.

She kept her eyes squeezed shut, frowning in concentration.

Miguel reached out to grab her arms and Ayane in turn grabbed his, opening her eyes and holding him by his wrists.

"See?"

He rolled his eyes, Ayane letting him go with a smile on her face.

"How'd you do that? Were you peeking?"

Ayane sent him a look, pursing her lips. "No, I was using kata. It teaches you how to sense your opponent, even if your back is turned to them. Cool, right?"

Miguel raised his hands. "Sure... but what opponent is going to give you time to meditate first?"

"That's not the point, dumbass," Ayane said, shoving his shoulders lightly. "The more you do it, the less meditating you'll have to do. It'll come naturally."

"Whatever you say."

Ayane looked at him for a moment. "You think it's bullshit, don't you?"

Miguel smiled a little, holding his hands up. "Your words, not mine."

She went forward to hit his chest and Miguel took her arm, turning her around and grabbing her by the waist from behind.

He leaned forward, saying, "Did you sense that coming?"

Ayane met his eyes, replying, "Maybe."

Miguel suddenly kissed her, turning Ayane around to face him.

They both smiled into the kiss until Ayane pulled back, saying, "I just realized we're still in these stupid costumes."

He began to laugh. "Stupid? I thought you looked pretty hot."

"Yeah? I thought you looked pretty hot, too."

Miguel kissed her again, like he just couldn't help himself.

"You know," Ayane broke away for a moment, "no one's home right now..."

Miguel gave her a knowing look. Then, he said, "Wait. Was this all just a ploy to get me to sleep with you?"

"Are you mad about it?"

He looked at her a moment longer, then let Ayane pull him upstairs to her room.

She pushed the door closed and turned, taken by surprise when Miguel pushed her back against the door and kissed her roughly, undoing the buttons of the blue blazer she was wearing. Ayane tugged off his red leather jacket and threw it to the side.

"Hey," Miguel gave her a look, "that's Sensei's jacket!"

"He'll get over it."

Ayane pulled Miguel closer to her and let his tongue in her mouth, grabbing his neck. Miguel's hand trailed up her thigh, pushing up the skirt she was wearing. He kissed her neck and grabbed Ayane's legs, picking her up and gripping her thighs.

She wrapped her legs around his abdomen and moaned softly as Miguel continued to leave rough, passionate kisses down her neck. He turned around, dropping Ayane on her bed. Ayane grabbed his wrists and pulled him on top of her impatiently.

"Someone's eager," Miguel teased, planting a light kiss on her lips.

"Hm. Shut up."

Ayane did shut him up, putting herself on top of Miguel and kissing him again. Her fingers traced along his abdomen while pulling up his shirt, and she paused for a moment and pulled back.

"You really have gotten abs, huh?"

Miguel rolled his eyes, replying, "Less talking, Cain."

Just as she was about to kiss him again, they both heard a car pull up.

"Dammit," she sighed, dropping her head to Miguel's chest.

Miguel laughed a little, gently pushing Ayane off of him. She sat on her bed with a deep frown.

"We can pick up where we left off another time, I'm sure," he reassured, grabbing his jacket and pulling it back on.

Ayane groaned, finally standing up and straightening out her skirt.

"I'm holding you to that," she said, giving him a pointed look.

"Good. Just prepare yourself for what might happen to be the most amazing night of your life, though."

Ayane shook her head with a smile, opening her bedroom door and showing Miguel the way out.

"This is a nice place," he remarked, looking around.

"Yeah," Ayane replied, "it's beautiful."

They walked down the stairs, finding Robby and Sam walking in just then.

"You guys are back sooner than I expected," Ayane remarked, raising her eyebrows.

Robby noticed Miguel immediately, rolling his eyes.

"Yeah, we decided to call it a night. Tory kept ruining the vibe."

Ayane glanced at Sam, who looked pissed.

"She screwed with you guys, too?"

"Really just me," Sam replied, shaking her head sourly. "I hate her."

Ayane smiled thinly. "Yeah, me too. Anyway, uh- Miguel here was just leaving."

Miguel nodded curtly, shoving his hands in his pockets and walking toward the door. He pushed past Robby rather aggressively, which Ayane was not oblivious to.

They told each other goodnight outside, and then Ayane walked back in. She was surprised, however, to see Robby still standing there.

"Oh- hey. I feel so honored to have James Spader here, by the way."

Robby rolled his eyes with a small laugh, putting his hands in his pockets.

"Ayane... I don't think you should see Miguel anymore."

She raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms rather defensively.

"You gonna give me a reason for that statement, or...?"

Robby poked his tongue in his cheek. "He's not as good as he wants you to think. Trust me. He claims that Cobra Kai hasn't changed him but I think it's only a matter of time-"

"I think you should calm down and stop making assumptions about people," Ayane snapped, tilting her head to the side challengingly.

Robby's face softened. "I didn't mean to offend you, I'm just trying to tell you the truth."

"You're telling me bullshit," Ayane replied through gritted teeth. She stepped closer to Robby. "I'm not a fan of Cobra Kai, and you know that. But a karate dojo has nothing to do with my relationship."

She pushed past Robby toward the stairs, then paused and turned back to him.

"So stay out of it."
