Rumors

Theo was pissed off. He called Mel more times than he could count since he found out about Belles father. During the day, he tried going to spots he'd think she'd be at; the school, her house, Liam's house, the hospital but he couldn't find her and he didn't have anything to trace her scent.

At night, Theo decided he should go look for her now. There was a high chance she was just at home considering if something was happening where she'd be at the sheriffs station or the hospital, she most likely would've called him.

Theo quickly and quietly crawled out of the window in Belles bedroom. He landed on the ground with ease and ran to his truck that was a block down so Belle's father wouldn't get suspicious.

Theo hopped into his car as soon as he could, freezing out since he was only in a thin t-shirt and sweats. Just as he was about to start the car, there was a tap on his window. Theo turned his head and cursed under his breath at the cop flashing their flashlight at him.

He huffed and rolled down his window. Just as he was about to ask what the problem was, the officer shot him.

...

Melanie slept over at Liam's. Which wouldn't seem like problem considering Liam always slept over at Mel's, but Scott refused to let Melanie sleep over at Liam's.

Melanie tiredly woke up at the sound of Liam's front door open. When she heard Liam's mom talking to Scott, Melanie gasped and threw the blanket covers over her and Liams heads.

"Liam, get up." Scott said as he entered the room and Liam groaned, rolling over and cuddling more into Melanie. "No, I'm... I'm sick. I'm sick."

"You're not sick." Scott said and Liam started to fake cough. "Yeah, I'm like deathly ill. It's serious. I think... I think it's the flu." He groaned.

"It's not flu season."

Melanie rolled her eyes at Scott as Liam stammered to think of another excuse. "Uh, then I probably have pneumonia." He grumbled, hiding his face in Melanie's neck and squeezing her tight.

Scott groaned. "Liam, you're a werewolf. You can't get pneumonia."

"Werewolves can't get pneumonia?" Melanie whispered under her breath, making Liam quickly remove himself from Melanie's shoulder and press his finger against her lips, mimicking shushing her.

"You know what? I'm gonna call Mel. She'll get you up." Scott mumbled, typing in Melanie's number into his phone. Melanie looked around the bed for her phone to quickly silence it, but remembered she left it on Liam's nightstand.

His phone rang two times before Scotts ringtone on Melanie's phone rang from Liam's nightstand. Knowing her cover was blown, Melanie's arm popped out from under the covers and grabbed her phone, declining Scott's call.

"Mel is busy. Leave a message after the beep." Melanie grumbled in a robotic voice under the covers and Scott pursed his lips after the few seconds of silence. "Are you gonna say beep or-" "No, I'm not gonna say beep!" Melanie complained, peaking her head out from under the covers before hiding back in them, wrapping her arms around Liams waist as his hands wrapped around hers, pulling her into his chest.

"How did you not hear two heartbeats under here?" Melanie asked, her voice muffled from her face now being in the crook of Liam's neck. "I saw you in your bed at home. Plus, I figured your scent was in here because you give and Liam give each other hoodies." Scott reasoned and Melanie chuckled. "That was Belle in my bed."

Scott rolled his eyes, figuring he'd reprimand Melanie later about sleeping over. "You two are going to be late to school. So come on, let's go." Liam pulled the sheets off of him and Melanie to glare at Scott. "I don't think I should go to school. Or outside. Or anywhere. Ever again." Liam rambled before he leaned back down and pulled them covers back over him and Mel.

"It doesn't matter what you think, okay? Because you gotta go. Now all you do is pretend like nothing happened." Scott said and Liam shot back up again, making Melanie groan. She was cold and didn't want to be in the bright light yet.

"Pretend? I'm just supposed to pretend?" Liam yelled and Scott sighed, realizing his choice of words were not the greatest. Scott walked towards the head of the bed on Liam's side, kneeling down. "Think of it like when Superman gets caught with his glasses off. You know, he doesn't give up. He puts them back on and says, 'I'm still Clark Kent.'"

Liam's face scrunched at Scott's words. He stared off ahead of him for a second. Melanie sat up on her elbows and turned to Liam, not knowing what was taking him so long to answer. Finally, he turned to Scott. "You want me to wear glasses?"

Melanie groaned, falling back on the bed as Scott sighed, shaking his head. "No! I want you to go to school, okay?" He said as he walked back towards the foot of the bed. Scott grabbed Melanie and Liams feet, pulling them off the bed. Melanie turned around and reached up, trying to grab the headboard so Scott wouldn't pull her off the bed, but she was too slow.

Mel and Liam fell to the floor with grunts as Scott smiled down at them. "And be Liam Dunbar and Melanie Yukimura. Just like how Superman has to be Clark Kent, like Spider-Man, and Captain America-"

"Captain America is just Steve Rogers. He doesn't have to pretend. Everyone already loves him. Unlike us, who everyone hates. They hate us for trying to save their lives." Liam interrupted and Scott smiled, pointing at Liam before squatting again down to the two seniors. "You're right. We are trying to save lives. Which is why you're gonna get up and go to school and pretend like nothing happened. Because if you don't, more people could die."

Melanie turned to look down at her wrist. She, without thinking, stretched her hair tie that was on her right wrist and let it go, letting it snap back and sting her arm. Melanie's eyes twitched at the feeling. She hadn't done it in a while.

Liam, hearing the wristband, turned to Melanie and grabbed her hand, interlocking their fingers. He gave her hand a squeeze as Scott frowned. I didn't really know Brett or Lori. Well, not like you two did. But I know you guys. And if you're afraid of seeing more of your friends die, you'll go."

...

Melanie and Liam slowly walked into the school, all eyes immediately going on them. Melanie, keeping her eyes ahead, grabbed Liam's hand and gave it a squeeze.

Liam took a deep breath before walking down the hall towards his locker.

Melanie heard someone come up behind Liam and saw Mason. The boy gave Liam a smile, walking with them. "This might be easier than we thought." Mason said as they reached Liam's locker. Liam put in his locker combination and opened his locker.

"Maybe." He grumbled as he took stuff out of his backpack and then threw stuff in. Melanie watched as Liam suddenly stopped filling his backpack. She looked up to his face and saw that he had tilted his head, listening to surrounding conversations.

"Just block it out." Melanie said and Liam turned to Melanie and Mason, shaking his head vigorously.

"They know." Liam said, looking around the hall. Melanie followed his actions and her eyes widened. Almost the entire hallway was looking at the three of them.

"Just rumors. They don't know anything." Mason said and Melanie nodded in agreement. "Exactly. It's not like anyone that goes here was there."

"Two sophomores on the lacrosse team were there the other night." Corey said, walking up to the three and Melanie shut her eyes at the horrible timing. She sighed before opening her eyes again, giving Liam a reassuring smile.

"Yeah, but it was late, it was pitch black out, and there was fog on the road." Melanie said, turning to Corey and giving a look telling him to play along, but he didn't catch on. Corey looked at her with confusion across his face, shaking his head. "It was a clear night. Full moon. And a well-lit intersection."

Melanie's eyes doubled in size, turning her whole body to face Corey. "Okay, Corey-" She started, about to lecture him before Liam cut her off. "I have to get out of here." He muttered. Melanie instantly turned back to face Liam, shaking her head. Melanie took a step forward, grabbing his hand. "No. If you leave, these rumors never stop."

Mason nodded along with Melanie. "You gotta just convince them that you're a regular kid." Mason added. Liam shook his head, his eyes filled with worry. "I'm not a regular kid." Liam said, his voice sounding panicked. Melanie squeezed Liam's hand and Liam's gaze fell to Melanie. "I know. I know." Melanie said, using her free hand to hold Liam's face.

Liam leaned into Melanie's hand as she continued. "Look. Remember what Scott said? Be Clark Kent."

"Clark Kent turns into a guy with a red and blue outfit and a cape. I turn into a monster with claws and fangs." Liam said quietly, taking a step closer to the three, making sure only they can hear him. Corey nodded along with Liam, giving him a small smile. "Then just get through the day without shifting."

...

After first period, Liam met up with Melanie at her locker. Liam tapping his foot repeatedly. His eyes jumped from face to face around the hall, everyone's eyes still on him just like earlier.

When Mel closed her locker, Corey and Belle were behind the door, startling Melanie slightly.

"We overheard Nolan talking to Gabe." Belle said and Melanie rose her brows at the two of them.

"You guys are spying on them?" Melanie asked and Corey looked to Melanie as if she was crazy. "Since he stabbed Belle? Yeah." He said before turning to Liam. "Nolan's gonna try to get you to shift. He needs proof and he wants everyone to see it."

Liam straightened up, walking closer to Corey and Belle. "So what's he gonna do?" He asked and Belle shrugged. "We don't know. That's all we heard."

Liam sighed and tilted his head again to listen to his surroundings. Melanie sighed, shaking her head at Liam. "Liam, you've got to stop listening to what people are saying." She said, but Liam's eyes widened, looking down at Melanie. "Nolan's coming."

The four looked around, trying to find somewhere for Liam to hide. Belle looked behind her and smiled at Mrs. Monroe's office. Belle grabbed Liam's wrist, pulling him towards the doors. Liam quickly caught on to where Belle was leading him and opened the door to the office, running in and bringing down the window cover so Nolan couldn't see inside.

Melanie felt her phone buzz. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and her face faltered slightly when she saw Melissa's contact. Melanie felt her heart start to beat faster. Melissa told her she'd never call unless it's an emergency. Melanie didn't waste a second answering the call.

"Is everything okay?" Melanie asked. Corey and Belle turned to Melanie, hearing the worry in her voice as Gwen and Mason came over.

"Melanie, sweetheart. I'm going to need you and your friends to be really careful around Mrs. Monroe." Melissa said.

A nervous chuckle left Melanie's lips as she looked at the guidance counselors door right beside her. "Why?" She asked and she heard Melissa sigh.

"She's a hunter. She's was one of the hunters that helped kill Brett and Lori."

Melanie almost dropped her phone at Melissa's words. She turned back to the office door and her heart rate started to pick up thinking about how Liam was alone in there with a werewolf hunter. Melanie gulped, shaking her head as she looked down at the floor. "I... I will. I love you."

"I love you too." Melissa said and Melanie slowly pulled the phone away from her face and hung up the phone. She put it in her pocket, her jaw slacked and her eyes wide, Corey and Belle's face matching her expression from hearing the call.

"What's wrong?" Mason asked and Melanie turned to him and Gwen. Her eyes flickered to the guidance counselors officer on her side before she turned back to her friends.

"Monroe's a hunter."
