10. Double Date
"Okay, so you're both going to go back to the time Wells was distracted by the jackass Hartley," Cisco says as he jots down a few notes onto the board. I felt like I was in school again, and I didn't like it.
"Who's Hartley again?" I ask as Cisco lowers his marker, looking back at me with a slight glare. I couldn't help it; I sucked with names without given a face to memorize.
Barry answers the question for me. "He's a villain that uses sound waves. He almost killed me last year, but we don't need to discuss that into detail."
"As I was saying," Cisco continues on as Caitlin walks back into the room, holding some type of dart. "Whenever you get there, you're going to stick that dart into the other Barry and that should hopefully knock him out long enough for you to get your speed equation."
Caitlin hands it to Barry as I stare at it...it bringing bad memories I didn't want to remember. "Also, you can't tell Cisco and I about Wells or else it will seriously screw up the timeline."
Barry nods as I gulp, trying to remember all of this stuff. I've always been the one for cheating on tests, but this one I couldn't cheat on. "You getting all of this Raven?"
"Eh," I croak out, getting a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I was going to screw something up. I just hoped that I was wrong.
"It's going to be okay," Cisco informs me. "You'll just be there to help Barry knock out the other Barry, and then you stay in the shadows until Barry presses that nice little button I hid in his shoe. You'll get the alert via sound, from the com I put in your ear, and that will either mean it's time to come home or Barry seriously screwed up. Let's hope it's the first option."
I nod my head as I readjust my com in my ear. "What am I supposed to do in the shadows?"
"Eat, breathe, play tic tac toe for all I care; just don't do anything that will mess up the timeline, you got that?" he assures me, causing me to nod.
Everyone looks around at one another in silence for a good while, not sure what to say. Finally, Cisco wraps his arms around Barry and I both at the same time, wishing us luck. Caitlin only hugged Barry, but it didn't bother me any. I wasn't a big fan of her myself.
"Remember to return to this exact moment," Cisco nods before Barry looks over at me, a small smile on his face, trying to hide his nerves. "You two got this."
Barry half smiles before looking over at me, disappearing for a moment to put his costume on, and then standing back in his same exact spot. "Ready to go?"
"Wait that reminds me," Cisco says quickly before he's dashing off into another room, not sure what he was doing. It wasn't until he returned with a stack of clothes that my eyes widened, the clothes not looking like the normal ones he's been letting me borrow when it came to running.
I raise an eyebrow. "What's that?"
"After what happened with Eliza on the bridge a week ago, I thought maybe you should get your own costume too," he says, making my stomach drop. I didn't want a costume. I didn't want to get attached; I didn't want to mean something to them. "It's still a work in progress, but this is what I have so far."
He holds it up then, my eyes watching closely as I held my breath. When the fabric finally unfolds, all I could feel was something like gratitude, something I haven't felt in quite some time. It was a sight for sure; the look of it reminded me of the Black Canary and Barry's suit mixed together. There were two pieces that met together with a belt, all of it being jet black. Down the side were lines and streaks of silver that met in the middle where my chest would be; a lightning symbol placed there just like Barry's.
"I-It-" I start to say, but couldn't find any words. A part of me was angry that they thought they had to make me a costume as if I was sticking around with them, but another was thankful for it. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to feel.
Cisco grins. "What do you think?"
"You can't ask her that until after she's tried it on," Barry nudges as he takes the costume from Cisco and places it in my hands. "Go try it out."
I nod simply, my face and emotions frozen before I dash away and put it on really quick, noting each and every little detail of the costume. It didn't have a hood like Barry's costume did, but instead I got a mask, just like the Black Canary's. This costume reminded me a little of my costume back home, only my costume at home had a more zoom look to it. This one hugged my curves better and made me look more like..a hero.
I run back into the room then, stopping as everyone looks over at me. A smile appears on Caitlin's face as Cisco claps his hands together, clearly glad of the work that he did. It wasn't until then I look over at Barry and saw his face; it looking almost like...disbelief.
"You look hot," Cisco laughs, walking over to me and looking me up and down. He twirls his finger in the air then for me to spin around, which I do so. "Doesn't she, Barry?"
He clears his throat, his eyes snapping from his daze. "Y-Yeah. I love it. You look fantastic...better than me, honestly."
"I don't deserve this," I shake my head, looking down at myself. "I can't believe you made this for me-"
"You deserve it," Barry nods, a small smile on his face then. "I know you don't think you're a hero or deserve to be, but you are. You just don't see it like I—I mean we—do."
My heart did it again...that stupid skip beat thing. I was about to croak out a thank you or something along the lines of that, but then Jay's voice was playing in my head like he knew what was going on. No love, no trust. No love...no trust. No love.
Barry's voice scatters my thoughts. "Ready to go?"
I nod steadily, Jay's voice fading away in my mind. "Ready."
"Good luck," Caitlin says to us one more time before Barry was extending his hand towards me, allowing me to take it before we're both running down to where they locked up the bad guys...where I should be. I couldn't help but feel guilty about everything I've done since I came here...either it was because of the damage I'd cause Barry and his friends soon, or because of how I didn't keep Jay's promise.
I trusted, and I loved.
Suddenly Barry stops and I do as well. He turns to me and says,"You should be fast enough as me, so just follow close behind. You might get a little dizzy, but it goes away after awhile, I promise. Stay close and keep up, okay?"
"Got it," I breathe before he nods back, his hand slipping away from mine. The next thing I know, he's turning into a flash of lightning and I am too, following close behind just like he told me to. We ran round and round in circles for what seemed like forever, but eventually, some type of blue looking hole appeared in the air, and Barry was leaping inside as I did as well.
It was strange, I know that for sure. It wasn't like running between worlds; it was so much different. This time, there were different events that played or that were going to play out soon. Most of them I wasn't sure what they were, but when I looked forwards at Barry to make sure I was keeping up, one of the images leaped out and went towards him.
"Barry!" I scream, my voice echoing around us as the ghost-like figure soars towards him, but I wasn't going to let it get him. I jump forwards as I grab him and tackle him, the figure soaring over us and disappearing.
When I opened my eyes again, I was no longer in the wormhole. I was lying on concrete, Barry in my arms; his eyes wide as he stared up at me.
"What just happened?" he says as I'm frozen, shaking my head.
"Something was coming for you," I breathe, trying to remember the figure I had seen. "It came from out of no where."
Barry's eyes wander then as I scramble off of him, his face going white. "Oh no. We're too early."
I look over then, seeing a different version of Barry standing over someone I recognized as Hartley, the guy that Cisco educated me about. The cops were surrounded as I focused my ears on him, hearing Hartley say,"You know my name. Well, I know some names too..."
"What now?" I ask, trying to think of how we were supposed to stick to the plan. We weren't that far off track...this could still work.
Barry and I watch for a moment before suddenly a high pitched siren was ringing in my ear, along with Barry's. We both cringe and lower our heads as I grit my teeth, wondering what in the hell that was. Suddenly though, I see the other Barry look over at us, and before I could react, Barry was grabbing my hips and flashing me away from where we were visible. The next thing I know, the sound was gone and I was standing behind a dumpster.
"You okay?" he asks me as I readjust my com, nodding my head. Barry walks around me then and watches his past self and Hartley talk, myself doing the same thing. "This could still work, I remember this."
I watch Hartley stand up then, pride in his voice. "Aren't they on the other end listening, too? Are they going to listen to you die?"
Barry stares at him for a moment before half grinning. "No, they're going to hear you-"
"-Get your ass kicked," my Barry says, earning a glance from me. "What? That was one of my best lines."
I look back at the other two and watch Hartley extend his hands, sound waves emitting from them. Barry goes flying back into the glass then as my Barry hands me the needle, giving me a look to be ready, so I was. Barry flashes away then as I watch him grab the other Barry, bringing him back into the alley before pinning him against the wall.
"Raven, now!" Barry screams at me, glancing over at me.
The other Barry is scared shitless. "W-Who are you?"
"I don't have time to explain," Barry assures him before I run over, holding the needle up, aiming for his shoulder. When I go to inject him however, he gets away from Barry's grasp and runs away, my swing going nowhere.
Barry turns and runs off after him as I do as well, clutching onto the needle as best as I could. I stop on the street as I look up at Barry and Barry, the two of them fighting on top of the stairs. My Barry trips the other one before the other one is running back down, trying to avoid me. Barry gets to him first as he pushes him to the side, causing him to go flying back down the ally, lying on the ground, defeated.
I dash over as Barry does as well, holding him down. Barry's eyes are wide. "I don't understand, you're me-"
"Sorry," I breathe as I stick him with the needle, hearing his gasp before his eyes start to flutter shut. "It'll all make sense eventually."
His head falls to the ground then as Barry grabs his lightning symbol, switching it out. He looks back at me then before nodding, stealing his coms as well before sticking them in his ears, not turning them on yet. "Remember, stay in the shadows."
"Got it," I breathe before Barry turns the coms on, running away back to the scene where Hartley was. My gut twists then, loving the excitement of it all. I've missed it.
I look back down at the other version of Barry, raising my eyebrow at him. Barry sure hasn't changed much in looks over the years, that's for sure. I kick him slightly, making sure he was asleep before sighing.
"I guess it's just you and me now."
