Phoenix and His Dragon
The forest was cast in darkness, the moonlight blocked by the canopies of the largest trees Phoenix had ever seen. Everything was silent, no birds or insects to be heard. He shivered as a chill ran down his spine and he crossed his arms over his chest. The uneasiness in his stomach began to build as he paused to listen. Was that a branch breaking? He shook his head, trying to calm his thoughts. The movement caused his dark shaggy hair to fall across his face and he swept it away in irritation.
Phoenix felt foolish, like a child. He was on a mission to get what he wanted and he knew he shouldn't be letting fear of the darkness get to him like it was. He continued on for a few more minutes, the darkness growing steadily thicker. Soon he could barely see the outline of his hand in front of his face and was forced to slow his steps after tripping over several knots of tree roots.
Anxiety gripped him as he crept through the trees. He couldn't be the prince everyone wanted him to be and didn't want to be. However, he had a feeling that he may not make it long enough to find out if he even wanted to be.
A sudden roar broke through the silence, startling Phoenix backwards and causing him to fall. He could hear the trees snapping and falling as the creature drew near. Fear gripped him and held him frozen in place as a burst of flames lit up the night sky. The dragon was massive, bigger than he had ever dreamed. The medallion in his pocket began to heat up at the presence of the beast. Phoenix smiled as he pulled it out, knowing this amulet would give him his dreams. It would tame this beast, and it would become his.
