CALYPSO ORELLANO KNOWS
who she is. She's probably known it since the day she was dumped at on the craphole planet of Ostia, at the ripe age of three. She's known it all through her miserable time as an orphan. She knew it when she aged out of the system and had to fight for her chance to survive. And she knows it now, on a planet far from her own, with not a soul to call a friend, lover, or family.

She knows she's unwanted. People don't really like her, and she can't blame them on that. She's got a bitter tongue and a sour attitude, and if it weren't for her incredible skills as a mechanic, she knows she'd probably be broke and close to dead. Luckily, Calypso's a top-notch mech who's been working on her skills since eight, and her work ethic's enough to keep customers, and herself, satisfied.

Well, satisfied enough. It's not a coincidence, or of any fault of hers (most of the time) that her time at a job only lasts a couple lunar cycles. Staying in one place too long is...draining. It reminds her how alone she is, traipsing home from work to an empty apartment and an empty bed. So she plays her cards well. Negotiates ace work from her for as long as she wants to stay, at top-level pay rates, until she gets bored and hitchhikes off to another galaxy. Life's still lonely, but at least she doesn't have much time to think about it.

On the planet Vargo, it feels like Calypso's gonna run through the exact same routine again. That is, until a man with an unearned swagger in his walk and a whole lot of weight on his shoulder saunters into her life, in need of a favour.

I do not own the Guardians of the Galaxy, from their origins to the movies that this is based around; all of the credit for the plot lines, characters and references goes to the director James Gunn and comic creators Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. This specific plot creation, as well as the original character Calypso Orellano, are all created by the absolutely amazing @starfragment, and I cannot take any credit for that base idea or main character.

However, I do own this plot, all original characters, and all writings done in this book unless otherwise stated. I'd appreciate very, very much if you respected this and looked at this story as something to appreciate, NOT to steal and claim as your own. I'm a tired, bitter old(ish) lady who doesn't have much, and these little books mean a great deal to me. So if I can anyone stealing a word of this book, I'll be filing a complaint with my lawyer (aka, throwing hands & being incredibly passive-aggressive -- and I'd fear that, my skills with the written word in terms of malicious intent are not to be reckoned with).

Also: some characters may have opinions or make choices you may not agree with. Please understand now that there are reasons for every choice in this book, they're not attacks on your or anyone's opinions, and that doesn't mean that I as an author reflect my characters. Everything here is fictional, and it's just a silly fanfiction. I'd like if we understood that going into this. I appreciate comments of most kinds! But I don't love rude or demeaning ones. If you don't like my book, feel free to write your own.

I've taken the plunge and finally decided to rewrite this story. I was sick of being on this site and seeing it and knowing it could be good, but not committing fully with it. Calypso was one of the first characters I committed fully to, and SFOS was one of the first books I completed. It used to be the second biggest book of mine on my profile, and I used to cringe looking at it because...it was so bad. It felt rushed and poorly manufactured, and I didn't do justice to Cal as a character. It was also laden with problematic issues I didn't get 'til I was older. I love that I had the chance to write it, it opened a lot of doors on this site and for a fifteen yr old, it was okay, but for a twenty-one year old? Messy as HELL. Kind of embarrassing.

But here we are! Remixing this old gal. The loose idea's still the same, but this time it'll actually be ~good~. If you've ever read classic sci-fi, that's kind of the vibe I'm going with the world-building with this. We'll see if it's pulled off.

It's sad because the original creator of this plot & a longtime friend, starfragment, no longer uses this site. And it's crazy how different things are in life, from where we started vs where we are now. So this is dedicated to catie for lending me this plot years ago and trusting me with it. Even though she won't see it. :)

Oh, also? I recasted Peter Quill to Pedro Pascal. Why? Because I'm in love with Pedro Pascal. And because I can. :)
