posters for my top 5 movies of 2024
(from scratch in 45 minutes)

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉 welcome to another graphic challenge! (got to put my design classes to good use). i did this challenge a year ago (published it last month oups) with my favorite character and i thought it could be fun to do it with my favorite movies i watched this year. (no re-watches. sorry enola holmes 2).

last time i had my moodboard and images ready but to give myself an even bigger challenge this time i'm starting from scratch. (except i thought of this in october, so i've had some ideas for pretty much all of them (except one which i watched the day before)).

like last time, i put them in a randomizer so they're in the order i made them.
& i have little reviews (not my letterboxd reviews) but they are spoiler free!

1 — BOTTOMS (2023)
directed by : emma seligman
genre : comedy
small summary : two loser girls start a self-defense club trying to get girlfriends.

watched : march 29
my review : this movie is literally so funny. ✨women✨. i watched this on a plane and it was like 12am at this point but i had a blast.

font : tropi land
thoughts : uhhhhhh. this was the first one i did and it was rough. i had a precise idea of what i wanted in my head (i wanted a school gym's floor with the colored lines and "bottoms" written across in script). but when i went to do it, it didn't work and there was 15 minutes left on the timer so i panicked and went "well i'll just get a screenshot from *scene at the end of the movie* and put the title over it and call it a day" but i saw this frame and i was like perfect i'll slap bottoms on jeff's ass. listen it has potential but i was out of time.

after timer : i added the actors names and the director so it's less empty. i also added a football player (from an earlier frame) because i needed something on the right. and i made the background lighter.

2 — LES CHAMBRES ROUGES (red rooms) (2023)
directed by : pascal plante
genre : thriller
small summary : kelly-anne is obsessed with the trial of murderer ludovic chevalier. and is desperate to find the missing video of his third victim.

watched : december 26
my reviews : i saw the trailer last year and i was super intrigued, it was even in many letterboxd top lists for 2023 and since it's french canadian that surprised me (it's not a drag i am french canadian), and it's a thriller which we don't really get. so i really really wanted to watch it. my expectations were kinda high but it didn't disappoint. the cinematography is EVERYTHING. the ending kinda bothered me but as i watched the credits it didn't really matter anymore.

thoughts : i watched the movie the day before making this so i didn't really have time to think of ideas. but i was watching video reviews of the movie and they kept showing the video of kelly-anne in court and i was like ohh that could be a good image with like tabs open around. i tried to do that but i was out of time. i wanted to do some tabs "coding style" but all knowledge of html left my brain at that exact moment.

after timer :  finished the tabs and changed the title to lowercase. i also did 2 other posters with another idea i had : making the title with small letters (it took like an hour and it's not even straight).

3 — ALIEN (1979) & ALIEN ROMULUS (2024)
directed by : ridley scott (alien) / fede álvarez (romulus)
genre : science fiction & horror
small summary : a commercial spaceship crew investigates an unknown signal and encounters extraterrestrial life. (alien) / hoping to escape their mining colony, a group of teens scavenges a deserted space station. (romulus)

watched : september 28 (alien) / october 13 (romulus)
my reviews :
alien — for most of the movie i was like yeah it's good but i don't really get why it's in everyone's top movie list. but the last half an hour, omg it is really good.
alien romulus — rain carradine be my girlfriend please and thank you! i was on the edge of my seat the whole movie. (also i was anybody gonna tell me archie renaux is hot?). yes my letterboxd doesn't lie i watched this 3 sundays in a row and had to talk myself out of watching it immediately after my first watch and i have to constantly talk myself out of watching it for a fourth time (until i get the dvd).

fonts : none. i panicky did that by hand with the pen tool. (i know the pen tool hates to see me coming.)
thoughts : making 2 posters with hand lettering in 45 minutes was stressful. for the alien poster the helmet cuts off and i spent 10 minutes trying to do the rest of the circle (ridley scott i need to have a talk with you. why isn't the full helmet in frame?). but i really do love them (the letters need adjustments but) this is exactly how i imagined.

after timer : it's pretty much the same. i just adjusted the letters, made rain (romulus) a little brighter, arranged the helmet for the alien poster, and made the turquoise/green a little less saturated. (shame i didn't make the posters 16x20 because i would have hung them on my wall)

4 — GREEN ROOM (2015)
directed by : jeremy saulnier
genre : horror
small summary : a punk rock band plays at a bar, where they witness an event the owners will do anything to protect.

watched : august 18
my review : just thinking about this movie i'm shaking. that was so stressful omg. it starts off slow but jesus when it starts. my stress levels were trough the roof. i was still shaking an hour later.

thoughts : oh god this looks bad. i had a win with the last one and a major flop here. the content is alright, it's the coloring that is atrocious. i was out of time so i couldn't fix it

after timer : the text is the same, i just changed the colors so it looks better (similar to the actual movie poster). and i removed some blood splatters because there was a lot.

5 — LA SOCIEDAD DE LA NIEVE (society of the snow) (2023)
directed by : j. a. bayona
genre : history & drama
small summary : true story of the survival of an uruguay rugby team's plane that crashed in the andres alps in 1972.

watched : january 7
my review : my grade 12 english teacher made us watch the movie alive (also about the andres flight) but i didn't remember much so i was intrigued. and it inspired one of my favorite tv shows (yellowjackets) so i had to watch. but jesus christ this movie. i love it, but i will probably never rewatch it. it's so captivating, at one point i was shivering. and i won't spoil anything but it's horrifying as one person on letterboxd put it (covered a spoiler-ish).

and people on letterboxd being like "scariest plane crash scene since final destination". final destination is nothing compared to this.

thoughts : not that bad! i mainly have to adjust the colors and the lights from the window (because there's no light. where is that light coming from??). also i forgot this movie is originally in spanish sorry the title is in english (i have one with the spanish title below). i know this movie is about resilience so it should be a bit more positive but as the letterboxd review i put above says it's terrifying, so i wanted to have a bit more horror vibes. before starting i was very nervous if i was gonna be able to make the "written in the frozen window effect" but i shouldn't underestimate the power of blending modes and directional blur.

after timer : i just made it darker and i added some very small text at the top and bottom because i thought it looked blank. and the spanish version is here too!

i have more ideas for future movie posters challenges :
— the rest of the alien posters so it's a series (but most likely not resurrection. i will not touch this movie with a ten-foot pole.)
— my letterboxd top 4 (so theoretically it could match if i had patreon and they allowed fan made posters)
— a poster for each scream movie but with my favourite line (because all the movies have great one-liners)
