chapter one.
Caitlyn had been working at Gwendolyn's since 6 in the morning. She opened the restaurant with Gwen and CJ and almost immediately, droves of families started to pile in for a table.
CJ was running deliveries and Gwendolyn was working the kitchen, so Caitlyn and Parker, a twenty-something year old that does concerts in his garage were the only servers in the small, but very busy restaurant.
"Caitlyn!"
At the sound of her name being yelled, Caitlyn spun around and came face to face with Parker, who was balancing five dishes up his forearms that he was about to serve.
He nodded his head toward the windows of the restaurant as he started to walked past Caitlyn to give out the dishes. "You've got a three-top at table eight." He said and Caitlyn almost immediately nodded.
"On it!" She called out as she already started to walk toward the table. She reached into the pocket of her apron and pulled out the ipad she'd be making their orders on. As she set up the ipad to her table, she reached the party of three.
"Hey, everyone. Welcome to Gwendolyn's! I'll be serving you today. My name is—"
"Caitlyn." A voice at the table spoke. He was breathless, as if in shock.
Caitlyn's head snapped up from her ipad. Her eyes locked with the boy sitting in the booth in front of her and it took a good three seconds for Caitlyn to finally recognize Devin Brewer sitting at the table with his dad. Her widened and a smile broke out across her face at the sight of the boy.
"Holy shit, Devin! Hi!" Caitlyn laughed out and Devin's face slowly started to turn pink. He blinked at Caitlyn before he let out a small laugh that made his smile grow across his entire face.
"He-Hey. Hey there, Caitlyn."
Caitlyn smiled at Devin's nervousness and decided to calm down her excitement a bit too not make it worse. Her smile softened and her head tilted as she looked at Devin.
He looked to same as he did the last time she saw him in middle school. He grew into his features and he grew out of his baby face. Frankly, Caitlyn thought he was cute back then but now? She was shrugging herself not to humiliate herself in front of the cute boy.
"I didn't know you were coming in this summer!" Caitlyn breathed out, still trying to process that Devin was sitting in front of her. She shook her head, making Caitlyn remember Anything was there too.
"Is Cece here too?" Caitlyn asked in excitement, taking a small step closer to the booth.
Anthony laughed at Caitlyn's excitement and Devin's nervousness. The man nodded his head and raised a single hand off the table as if to say, "calm down." He nodded his head towards the restrooms before he turned back to Caitlyn. "She ran to the restroom really quickly."
Caitlyn nodded, looking back down to her ipad to take the family's order. "Okay. I can come back in a minute if you guys need me to. Unless she said what she wants?" She said, pointing behind her to the kitchen as she raised her eyebrows at the two.
"Do you have kombucha?" Devin asked and Caitlyn immediately cringed. Before she could even answer Devin's question, he quickly blurted out another sentence.
"Not for me! For Cece." He almost yelled. Heads from nearby tables looked to him, but Devin didn't mind. He just didn't want Caitlyn to think he liked kombucha if that was her reaction to just hearing the name of the drink.
Caitlyn chuckled, her head dipping for a second before she looked back up to Devin. "I'm afraid we don't have kombucha." She said sweetly, noticing Gwen walk by the table and not wanting to get in trouble with her boss.
Devin relaxed as Anthony nodded his head, giving Caitlyn a small smile. "Then we'll wait till she gets back." Anthony reassured just as Cece walked back toward the table.
Cece stood next to Caitlyn since the Montez girl was blocking the booth entrance. She smiled at her dad and brother, raising her eyebrows playfully.
"I'm back!" She sang, making Caitlyn jump from next to her. When Caitlyn turned to her left to face Cece, Cece face instantly broke out into a big smile, recognizing Caitlyn.
"Oh my God! Caitlyn!" Cece screamed, pulling Caitlyn into a hug. Caitlyn laughed in Cece's arms hugging the girl back almost as tight. And Cece was hugging Caitlyn tight.
"Hi!" Caitlyn giggled out. Cece pulled away just enough to press her hands onto Caitlyn's shoulders. She stared at her old friend, trying to get a good look at this new version of her. Caitlyn laughed at this, but from the seats of the booth, Devin huffed.
"I didn't get a hug..." He grumbled to himself, but Anthony heard him from across the booth and side eyed Devin.
"You're sitting, Dev." Anthony muttered back dryly, making sure he was loud enough for only Devin to hear.
Cece's smile was big as she looked around eh restaurant before turning back to Caitlyn. "You work here?" She asked and Caitlyn chuckled, nodding her head. As much as she wanted to catch up on the twins, she was working right now and had a handful of other tables to check on.
"Yeah!" She said as she grabbed Cece's shoulders and side stepped to open the spot for the booth. "So... I'll need you to sit down so I can take your guys order." Caitlyn said, pushing Cece into the seat beside Devin.
The Brewers all laughed at what Caitlyn had done and after she got their orders, she said a quick goodbye and ran to help her to her tables.
The entire time she worked, Devin's eyes stayed on her. He watched the way she'd readjust her hair that was in her claw clip and how she'd somehow be able to carry six plates that traveled up her forearm to serve to her other tables. He watched the smile on her face as she talked with customers and it made his heart race. Even when his own food arrived—Parker had to give them their food because Caitlyn was so busy—Devin still couldn't pull his eyes away from Caitlyn.
Devin knew coming back to Gravesend would possibly bring back the massive crush he had on his best friend, but he hadn't expected it to come back so fast. All he did was look at her and his brain was malfunctioning just like it used to when he was twelve.
He picked at his food with his fork as he watched Caitlyn thank a table for the tip they gave her. As she stuffed the cash into her apron, her boss—who Devin assumed was Gwendolyn herself—called her over to the kitchen. The two of them had a quick conversation before Caitlyn nodded and sped away from the kitchen.
Suddenly, Devin felt an elbow jab into his ribs and he looked away from Caitlyn just as she walked over to her coworker, Parker.
"Dude, you are staring at her like a stalker." Cece whispered and Devin's face started to turn red over the fact that he got caught by his family.
His eyes moved from Cece to his plate of food in front of him just as Caitlyn ran back over, with a smile.
"Okay, boss says I've gotta make deliveries because CJ is MIA so I'll be passing you guys off to my buddy, Parker." Caitlyn said slightly out of breath, turning around quickly to point at the only other server in the restaurant. Devin winced to himself. Poor Parker.
Anthony shook his head and waved his hand to stop Caitlyn. "No, no. It's alright, Caitlyn. We were gonna ask for the check anyway." He said, looking to his kids across from him to make sure they were all ready to go. Cece and Devin nodded their heads and Caitlyn pulled her ipad out of the pocket in her apron.
"Alright! Let me add my discount and..." Caitlyn muttered as she quickly typed away on the ipad. Anthony shook his head, waving his hand around again.
"Caitlyn, you don't have to add any discount." Anthony reassured the girl, but it was too late, she was already typing the code into the order.
Caitlyn barely looked up from the screen, raising her eyebrows and quickly pointing at Anthony.
"I do incase one day, you decide to pay me for being your assistant. You can just bottle up all that money I took off of your meals and give it back to me." Caitlyn hummed, only partially joking.
Cece and Devin squinted at Caitlyns words. Devin moved to be a little closer to Caitlyn and looked ups to her with a confused expression. "You're our dad's assistant?" He asked and from beside him, Cece looked just as confused as him.
Caitlyn and Anthony both nodded, Anthony pointing up at the girl. "Caitlyn helps me in the lab." He explained and Caitlyn nodded in agreement.
"I've grown a love for botany." She hummed and Anthony's head snapped up to the young girl, a big smile on his face. "Oh! I love the pun!"
Caitlyn's smile was a mix of a smile and a smirk as she slowly turned the ipad around to face Anthony. "Maybe that joke is good enough for a pretty nice tip?" She asked, the "leave a tip?" screen shining against Anthony's face.
The man pressed his lips into a thin line. He looked up at Caitlyn, who had a small smile on her face as she waited for his next move. Anthony sighed, pressing the 30% tip and Caitlyn's eyes could've popped out of her head.
She tried her hardest to hide her excitement as Anthony paid and once he was done, she shoved the ipad back into her apron pocket and smiled at the family. "Thank you. Now, I have to go make those deliveries."
Just as she was about to turn away to put up her apron and ipad, Cece practically jumped out of the booth, a big smile on her face. "We'll walk out with you!" She said, her dad and Devin trailing out of the booth behind her.
Caitlyn quickly locked up her apron and ipad with her bag and then grabbed the orders she was asked to deliver. She was holding about five bags worth of food and luckily no drinks. The orders would just barely fit in the small basket connected to the front of her bicycle.
As she and the Brewers walked out of the restaurant, CJ pulled up. Caitlyn smiled at her friend as he parked his motorbike right in front of the restaurant.
"There he is!" Caitlyn cheered, throwing her arms out sarcastically. She walked down the few steps of stairs and pushed the bags of deliveries she was about to make into CJ's chest.
"Your mom is going to kill you." Caitlyn muttered under her breath and CJ smirked, taking the bags out of Caitlyn's hands.
"She can't. I'm her favorite." He said proudly, placing his free hand up to his chest. Caitlyn scoffed, rolling her eyes as she held back a smile. "We both know that's not true." She grumbled back. CJ just snickered, his eyes moving to see who followed Caitlyn out of the restaurant and he immediately smiled at Anthony.
"Plant man!" CJ cheered and Anthony chuckled. "Hey, CJ." He said back before he turned to Cece and Devin, pointing at CJ.
"CJ also works here. His mom is Gwendolyn." Anthony explained, pointing to the name of the restaurant behind the two kids. As the twins looked back at the restaurant, Anthony squinted at his son.
"Actually... Dev, maybe you could get a job here too." He suggested, making Devin's head snap back to face his dad. Devin stared at his dad for a few moments before Caitlyn let out a small squel, making him turn to her.
"That would be so cool!" Caitlyn cheered. Devin felt his face start to burn up and he couldn't hide it, especially when all four of them turned to look at him. Devin kept his eyes on Caitlyn, who was still smiling wide at the idea, and his heart practically leapt out of his chest.
"I- Um..."
"Boy, where have you been?" A voice yelled from the doorway of the restaurant, cutting Devin off.
Caitlyn's eyes finally moved away from Devin and to Gwen standing in the doorway, glaring at her son. "People have been calling and complaining about late food all day. I was sending Caitlyn would there to do your job instead of serving tables inside." She yelled, raising her arm out and gesturing to Caitlyn beside CJ.
CJ gave him mom a faux-squint, tilting his head and "nervously" scratching the back of his neck. "Yeah, I think the Q train was like shut down or something. The streets were butts to nuts from here to Red Hook." CJ breathed out in shock, looking down the direction he had just come from.
Caitlyn rolled her eyes while Gwen scoffed at her sons words. She turned back to Caitlyn and nodded her head to gesture to her son in aggravation. "Caitlyn, sweetheart, give CJ those deliveries. You come back inside." She yelled and Caitlyn smiled, grateful she didn't have to run any deliveries.
While Gwen walked back inside, Caitlyn happily handed CJ the rest of the order she was supposed to deliver. CJ took the bags without even looking at Caitlyn, keeping his eyes on Devin. "Bro, do not work here! The management sucks!" CJ whispered, his eyes wide as he shook his head dramatically.
"I heard that! One more comment and you're not going to the park!" Gwen yelled from inside the restaurant as Caitlyn walked back inside.
Caitlyn's eyes widened at the woman's words and she quickly spun back around to face Devin and Cece again. She spun around so fast, all three of the Brewers thought she'd fall off the stairs she was standing on and they all flinched, throwing their arms out to catch the girl.
"Oh, yeah! A bunch of us are meeting up at the park tomorrow. You guys should totally come! It's my first day off all week and I want to catch up with you guys!" Caitlyn said excitedly.
Cece immediately nodded, loving the idea and not wanting to get stuck at home all of summer. Devin on the other hand, stared up at Caitlyn, his mouth opening and closing in shock.
"Catch up? With... with us?" Devin asked, quickly pointing between him and Cece. Caitlyn smiled, nodding her head with a small laugh.
Devin just stared at her with a big smile, trying to come up with the right words. From beside him, Cece looked at him with wide eyes, shocked he was struggling this much to talk to Caitlyn.
So Cece turned to Caitlyn, nodding her head for her and Devin. "We'll be there!" She said and Caitlyn's smile doubled in size.
Caitlyn looked back into the restaurant really quickly before she turned back to Cece and Devin, nodding her head happily. "Sweet! I'll see you guys tomorrow!" She said before she ran back into her job.
...
The next day, Caitlyn laid back on a small picnic blanket with Alex, the two girls had shared a joint earlier and were staring up at the sky, pointing out the shapes in the clouds.
"Oh... What about that one?" Caitlyn asked, leaning a little closer to Alex so she could point at the cloud slowly moving over them. Alex's eyes followed where Caitlyn was pointing and she squinted.
"Cait, that's little just a blob." Alex deadpanned. She turned to face Caitlyn next to her and laughed when she saw the small girl staring up at said cloud, almost mesmerized.
At the sound of Alex's laugh, Caitlyn turned back to Alex and shook her head frantically. "What?" Caitlyn asked before she turned back to the sky. "It's totally a compass."
Alex didn't look back to the cloud, her eyes staying on Caitlyn. She laughed harder, looking at Caitlyn was raised eyebrows. "A compass?!" Alex laughed out and she laughed even harder when Caitlyn's head snapped back to face her, her eyes wide as if Alex was insane for not seeing the compass.
"Yes! It's like... so obvious!" Caitlyn yelled, but Alex hardly listened to her, continuing to laugh under her breath.
She looked back up at the sky as her laughter died down and pointed to a new cloud. "What about that one?" Alex whispered and when Caitlyn turned to look at this new star, CJ walked toward the two girls, standing over them.
Caitlyn huffed. "CJ." She answered and Alex's face scrunched. "The cloud looks like CJ– Oh!" Alex muttered, cutting herself off when she turned to look back up at the sky and saw only CJ above them. He had a teasing smirk on his face as he looked down at Caitlyn, raising his eyebrows playfully.
"It's 4:30 already." He said, looking down at his watch. CJ shrugged his shoulder and shook his head tauntingly. "They're not gonna show."
Caitlyn rolled her eyes, moving to sit up and glare at CJ. "They're gonna show." She said and CJ snickered to himself, pointing at Caitlyn.
"You're just saying that because you have the hots for Devin." CJ teased and Caitlyn clenched her jaw in embarrassment while Alex smirked beside her, immediately sitting up.
Alex leaned toward Caitlyn, letting out a teasing "ohhh" as she poked the girls shoulder. "Devin? Who's Devin?" Alex asked, but Caitlyn ignored the girl, continuing to watch CJ. Caitlyn shrugged her shoulders and shook her head.
"The hots? Who even says that anymore?" Caitlyn asked and before CJ could answer, Caitlyn watched two figures start to walk toward Caitlyn and her friends.
When she realized it was Cece and Devin, Caitlyn's smile grew and she pushed herself up to stand. "Ha! See! They did show up." She whispered to CJ, punching his arm repeatedly.
"Devvey! C-squared!" CJ yelled, walking toward the teens and Caitlyn quickly stepped on the back of his shoes, picking up her pace to walk with CJ. "Well, don't scare them away." She quietly reprimanded to CJ Just before they reached Cece and Devin.
As soon as the words left her mouth, CJ and Caitlyn were face to face with Cece and Devin. Caitlyn immediately looked to them as if she hadn't just scolded CJ, opening her arms out. "You guys made it!" Caitlyn cheered, pulling Cece into a hug first since the girl was directly in front of her.
"Yeah, we're here!" Devin said, watching the two girls hug as CJ dapped him up. When Cece and Caitlyn pulled away, Caitlyn moved to hug Devin and Devin felt his heart rate pick up. "We... We showed up." He stuttered out.
"Yes, Devon. We are very aware." Cece hummed, poking fun at the boys nervousness.
His arms snaked around Caitlyn's waist to return the hug and Caitlyn felt her stomach flip at the action. She suddenly didn't want to pull away, but she knew Cece and CJ were still standing with them. Caitlyn reluctantly pulled away and she had to force herself not to frown at the feeling of Devin around her disappearing.
Immediately, Devin shoved his hands into his pockets and squinted at Caitlyn. "Why wouldn't we come? It's bussin out here in Gravesend, you know? It's bussin." Devin said, looking around the park.
"What did he just say?" CJ asked from next to Caitlyn as Cece sighed, dropping her head in second hand embarrassment.
Caitlyn's face scrunched and her lips twisted into a smile. "Yeah, totally..." Caitlyn paused, cringing to herself before she could even say the word. "Bussin." She said, her voice getting higher and coming out as a question as her head tilted.
Caitlyn turned to look at Cece and the girl mouthed a quick "I'm sorry" to Caitlyn that she quickly shook her head at, silently telling her it was nothing.
Although she definitely though it was weird to be called "bussin," Caitlyn thought it was cute that Devin was so nervous around her.
"I told Frankie you guys were coming and she didn't believe me. You two definitely gave me some cool points." Caitlyn said, pointing behind her to Frankie, who was laying back on one of the park benches with Treys arm wrapped around her shoulders.
Cece perked up at the mention of Frankie and she quickly looked to where Caitlyn was pointing. "Oh! Frankie's here? Let me go say hi." Cece cheered, partially wanting to see Frankie and also wanting to get out of dying of second hand embarrassment watching Devin and Caitlyn speak.
Before she walked away, Cece linked her arm with CJ and started to tug him toward Frankie and Trey.
"You come with me." She whispered as they walked away.
"Your brother has no game." CJ breathed out in shock, but Caitlyn and Devin couldn't hear him. Cece scoffed at his words, side eyeing him slightly.
"Yeah? Well, neither does Caitlyn."
Once Cece and CJ were gone and Caitlyn and Devin were alone, Caitlyn smiled at Devin, licking her lips from stopping her smile from getting too big. "I am glad you guys are here. In Gravesend, not just the park." Caitlyn said and Devin's smile doubled in size.
"Yeah, I'm happy to be back." Devin lightly chuckled out, nervously pushing his hands into his jacket pockets.
Caitlyn's mind yelled at her to stop smiling and blushing so goddamn much. Sure, she had a crush on Devin back in middle school so these feelings were nothing new, but they weren't this bad all those years ago.
Caitlyn's grateful for that, but she also wishes it wasn't that bad now.
"I tried to find you on instagram, but I couldn't find any Caitlyn Sinclairs..." Devin said, pulling Caitlyn out of her thoughts. Caitlyn blinked at the name, watching as his hands swayed when his jacket pockets. She hadn't heard someone bring up her hyphened name since freshman year. Since her mom was still around.
"I actually dropped the Sinclair. I'm Caitlyn Montez now. No more hyphen." Caitlyn explained and Devin nodded, starting to feel his face heat up in embarrassment. His eyes moved to the floor as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
"Oh, okay. Well, I am really glad to see you." His eyes moved back to Caitlyn and he couldn't stop himself from smiling at the girl. "You look... um... you look bussin." Devin stuttered out, gesturing to Caitlyn.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Devin shut his eyes and cursed to himself. He waited for Caitlyn to make fun of him or walk away, but none of that happened.
Caitlyn's face scrunched and her lips twisted into a smile. When she let out a small laugh, Devin peaked open one eye and relaxed when he saw her smiling.
"Thank you?" She said, her voice getting higher and coming out as a question as her head tilted. Devin laughed with her, even if they were both laughing at his own mistake and embarrassment. But then, Devin noticed Cece leaning against the railing by the edge of the water. His eyebrows furrowed, making Caitlyn turn around to see what he was looking at. Caitlyn turned back to Devin just as he looked back to her.
"I'm gonna go check on her." Devin said, pointing to Cece about twenty feet away from them.
Caitlyn immediately nodded, side stepping so Devin could get to Cece faster. "Of course!" Caitlyn muttered and Devin quickly ran toward his twin to check on her. Caitlyn watched as Devin walked away and once he reached Cece, Caitlyn walked toward Alex, Trey, and Frankie sitting at one of the park tables.
Alex watched Caitlyn with a big grin as she sat down beside her, her eyebrows raised and ready to tease the girl. "So that's Devin." Alex hummed and Caitlyn rolled her eyes, holding back her own smile.
"Shut up." She muttered, side eyeing the girl, but all of her friends could see the smile fighting to break free.
Frankie giggled from across Caitlyn, shaking her head as she took a sip of her coffee. "He totally still likes you. Did you see how much he was blushing?" Frankie asked and Caitlyn looked down at her lap to hide her own blush with her hair.
Caitlyn shrugged, looking at Frankie through her eyelashes. "He's just nervous.." Caitlyn said and Frankie playfully rolled her eyes, leaning forward so she would be closer to Caitlyn. "So... Ask him out!"
"But I'm nervous!" Caitlyn said. Frankie threw her head back and let out a loud laugh, but Caitlyn continued. "Plus, he just got back. It'd be weird for me to ask him out already." Caitlyn tried to reason. When Frankie's laughter died down, she let out a small sigh, shaking her head.
"God, it's like middle school all over again." Frankie breathed out and Trey leaned forward to get closer to the huddled girls, looking between the three of them. "What happened in middle school?" He asked quietly. Since Trey was a year older than them, he didn't really know any of the girls back then.
Frankie, still gigging as she pictured a twelve year old Caitlyn and Devin, turned to her boyfriend as Caitlyn hid her face in her hands. "Caitlyn and Devin had the biggest crushes on each other." Frankie said before she suddenly squinted.
She turned back to Caitlyn across the table from her, her eyebrows creasing together. "Weren't you guys also each other's first kisses when we did spin the bottle on my twelfth birthday?" Frankie asked and Caitlyn wished she could've shriveled up and died right then and there.
Even though what Frankie said was true, Caitlyn groaned into her hands, hating that the attention was on her and her middle school life.
"Hey, guys!" CJ yelled, making Caitlyn look up from her hands and watch as CJ came running toward the table with Cece and Devin trailing behind him. When the three of them reached the table, CJ looked at his four friends with wide eyes and a smile that scared Caitlyn a little.
"Did you guys know that Devon and Cece's uncle was one of the kids that went missing in 1994?" CJ asked and Caitlyn's eyes widened at how blunt CJ's words were. It wasn't like it was a secret, the names of all of the kids that died were part of public records, but that doesn't mean Cece and Devin would want to talk about it.
Frankie was the first one to speak, nodding her head wildly. "Yeah, of course! I mean, that story gave me nightmares when I was younger. That place is seriously haunted." She said, shivering to herself just thinking about the story.
Alex squinted at Frankie. Sure, she had heard the stories. Her mom is a detective and dated one of the boys, but ghosts? Alex shook her head, looking up to the twins, specifically Cece and raised her eyebrows. "Wait, so what was the real deal?"
Cece let out a small, nervous laugh. "I mean, we don't... we don't know." She looked to Devin and CJ beside her before she turned back to Caitlyn and Alex sitting in front of her, shaking her head. "We don't spend a lot of time thinking about how our uncle tragically died."
Devin had his eyes glued on Caitlyn as soon as they walked over. He watched the way she looked up at Cece with wide eyes and thinking she was staring at his sister like that because she was interested in learning about his Uncle Matty, Devin quickly spoke up, not noticing he accidentally interrupted Caitlyn.
"They slept over on a dare!" He blurted.
Caitlyn's eyes moved to Devin. She was actually going to tell her friends to stop asking Cece and Devin about their uncle until Devin spoke.
"And they were killed by ghosts?" CJ asked, instead of acting remorseful, CJ had a grin that spread from ear to ear, like an excited little kid.
"CJ!" Caitlyn scolded, kicking her foot out from under the table and hitting CJ's shin. CJ yelped in pain, jumping back and away from Caitlyn.
As he moved to stand on the other side of Cece–away from Caitlyn–Devin shook his head to answer CJ's question. "No, nobody knows what happened." He said and when he turned back to the table full of teens, all of them had their eyebrows raised, silently asking him "really?" even Caitlyn.
Devin rolled his eyes, shrugging his shoulders. "Okay, I mean, they were probably not killed by ghosts."
Trey watched how calmed Devin looked saying everything that happened to his uncle and let out a small laugh. When everyone turned to him, Trey quickly held his smile with his fist and dropped his head. When his laughter died down, Trey looked back up Devin and raised his eyebrows.
"Wait, I'm sorry. So, you're saying that you're not scared of this place?" Trey asked.
Devin gulped at the question. He blinked at Trey and his eyes moved to quickly look at Caitlyn.
She was looking up at him with big eyes–not necessarily wide–just big. Looking at her now, Devin could see the old Caitlyn he was friends with before he moved out of town. Looking at her like that, Devin remembered the way he would always do anything he could to make her proud or admire him.
And just like that, Devin was wanting to do the same thing now.
He turned back to Trey and pursed his lips as if it were nothing but his hands were sweating anxiously in his pockets. He shook his head and shrugged. "Nope."
Trey slowly nodded, not believing Devin. He looked down at the table while his left arm moved to wrap around Frankie. "Why don't you, um..." Trey reached for Frankie's coffee with his free and took a long sip. When he put the cup down, Trey looked back up to Devin and raised his eyebrows, daring Devin.
"Why don't you prove it?"
Devin froze, opening and closing his mouth. He didn't think Trey would actually dare him to do anything.
And just like they used to in middle school, Devin's eyes made the grave mistake and looking to Caitlyn. She was glaring at Trey, silently scolding him and Trey, laughing, shrugged as if he had done nothing wrong.
"Caitlyn was mad at Trey because she doesn't think you can do this."
"You have to prove to her that you can do this."
"Now!"
"Okay!" Devin yelled to silence the voice in his head.
Everyone turned to face him, but his eyes stayed on Caitlyn. She nervously licked her lips watching him. Devin noticed the way Caitlyn's finger nervously tapped against her thigh and instead of thinking it was sweet that Caitlyn was worried about him, Devin wanted to show her that he'd be okay.
So he turned back to Trey, his face harder as he gave him a firm nod. "Okay."
