chapter two.

As soon as Devin said he wasn't scared of going to where his uncle and three other kids disappeared, everyone packed up and headed out for Devin to prove it.

Trey tried to fit as many people as he could in his car but he only managed to fit four people inside; him, Frankie, Cece, and Alex, leaving CJ, Caitlyn, and Devin to follow behind him; CJ on his motorbike and Caitlyn driving Devin.

Caitlyn didn't mind the arrangement—at all. She had a huge smile on her face as she led Devin to her car and as soon as he saw her dark grey sedan, his eyebrows raised.

"This is your car?" He asked and for a second, Caitlyn couldn't tell if the shock in his voice was because he thought it was cool, or he was unimpressed.

Caitlyn smiled nonetheless at Devin from across the hood as she unlocked her car. "She's kinda in bad shape. Saving up the money to be able to take it to Trey's and get it fixed. I'm hoping she'll act brand new by the end of summer." Caitlyn said as she and Devin climbed into the car.

Devin laughed at Caitlyn's words, watching as she started the car and followed Trey and CJ out of the parking lot.

"She?" He giggled out as he put on his seatbelt. His eyes were glued on Caitlyn as her entire face twisted into a smile and her cheek started to turn pink.

Caitlyn took one of her hands off the steering wheel to gesture around the car. "Oh, yeah! Devin, let me formally introduce you to Betsy." Caitlyn hummed, slamming her hand down on the center console.

She turned to Devin, who was holding back snickering at the name.

"You named your car Betsy?" He whispered, worried if he spoke any louder, he might accidentally laugh. Caitlyn playfully scoffed, turning back to the road.

"Yeah! An old name for an old car." She hummed, leaning forward to pat the dashboard. "She's like my grandma. Love this thing to death."

Devin laughed. Normally when he heard about people naming their cars, he thought it was weird. But when he saw Caitlyn talk about her car—about Betsy, he thought it was really cute.

He readjusted in his seat to face front and smiled at the radio. "Well, hello, Betsy." Devin said softly, nodding his head as a small greeting.

Betsy sputtered immediately after.

"Oh—um..." Devin muttered, flinching a little at the noise and the way the car shook. Caitlyn laughed, throwing her head back. When Devin turned back to Caitlyn, her laughter started to die down.

"That's a good sign." Caitlyn reassured. She turned back to the road and pressed her lips together to hide her smile. "That means she likes you. She's just nervous. Gets the stuttering from me."

Devin's eyes grew twice in size. He completely forgot about Caitlyn's stutter!

"I forgot you had a stutter. You can't even tell you used to have one." Devin breathed out, smiling at the memory of a younger, 11 year-old Caitlyn that couldn't even say her own last name.

Caitlyn scoffed, but a laugh trailed off after it. She rolled her eyes and turned back to Devin, who was stilling smiling at her. "Yeah, thank god for speech therapy. I couldn't go into high school with a stutter. It still comes out every now and then, but only when I'm nervous—like really nervous or feeling... the extremities of emotions." Caitlyn explained, rambling on more than she probably needed to.

She turned back to the road and watched as CJ and Trey veered off to the side of the road, just past Treys car was the gate, locked up with chains to keep people out.

Caitlyn sighed. A pit grew in her stomach as she pulled off to the side of the road. "Here we are." She muttered with a fake excitement.

Devin heard the nervousness in Caitlyn's voice and turned to see where they were heading. His breath hitched at the abandoned buildings in front of him. When Caitlyn parked, his eyes stayed glued on the ghostly looking walls and unbuckled his seatbelt.

"All righty." He mumbled under his breath.

Caitlyn and Devin climbed out of the car, Caitlyn locking Betsy behind her as she walked toward Treys car. Everyone piled out of the small car and Trey made a beeline for his trunk.

Caitlyn kept walking though. She continued until she was face to face with the chained up gate in front of her. Her hands reached so hold onto the wire, the inner knuckles of her fingers freezing from the metals cold temperature even though it was summer time.

"Watch out, Cate." Trey mumbled, gently putting a hand on Caitlyn's shoulder and moving her back a few steps to take her spot.

Caitlyn stumbled backwards into Devin's chest. As her back crashed into Devin's chest, the boy placed a quick hand on her waist to keep her steady. Caitlyn felt butterflies swarm in her in chest and from behind her, Devin opened and closed his mouth in shock and quickly let go of the girl.

She watched as Trey raised the bolt cutters in his hands to cut the chains locking the gate.

Caitlyn squinted at the back of Treys head. "You've just got bolt cutters in your trunk?" She asked and Trey scoffed over his shoulder, looking back at Caitlyn for a quick moment.

"Yeah, I got bolt cutters, bro. Who doesn't?" He asked, shrugging his shoulders as he broke the chains. Caitlyn blinked, looking around at the rest of her friends before turning back to Trey.

"Um... A lot of people. I think?" Caitlyn muttered while Trey unwrapped the chain from around the fence.

The gate rattled as Trey pushed it open. As everyone started to walk in, Caitlyn moved slowly, staring at the abandoned building in front of her with wide eyes.

"So what's the real deal with this place?" Alex muttered from Caitlyn's right. True chuckled, turning around to walk backward so he could talk to the group.

"Well, the legend is the military did creepy medical experiments here." Trey said, a big, shit-eating grin on his face as he wiggled his fingers around to try and freak everyone out.

Caitlyn cursed under her breath, wrapping her arms around herself tightly. Sherman looked up and squinted at the bright lights shining down on her. "And what's with all the lights?" Caitlyn asked, looking down to avoided getting blinded.

Trey pursed his lips and waved his hand around as he pointed to all the lights above them. "They, uh, they put in all the security after what happened. So no other kids die."

"How do you know all that?" Cece scoffed out under her breath and Trey cleared his throat, his head dropping nervously. "There's this, uh, 20/20 episode on YouTube from the '90s that tells about it. Interviewed my dad, actually, which is pretty cool."

Caitlyn snicked at how nervous Trey got, making the older boy whip his head around, glaring at her. But Caitlyn's eyes were busy on something just past Trey: the hallway Matty Brewer and his friends walked into and never came out of.

She let out a small exhale, speeding up her steps to pass Trey. "There it is."

Devin let out a low whistle, following Caitlyn. "Alert the media." He sarcastically hummed.

Caitlyn snickered, looking up at Devin next to her. Again, Devin didn't know how, but he could always just feel when Caitlyn was looking at him. He turned his head, eyes locking with hers, and a smile cracked through his lips.

Trey suddenly pushed in way past the two–in between them specifically, making sure to shove Devon to the side hard as he walked toward the final gate.

Caitlyn turned to Trey to glare at him, but she ended up scoffing when she saw him raise the bolt cutters again. "The bolt cutters have made another appearance." She sarcastically announced, mimicking a sports announcer. The comment earned herself the finger from Trey, but a small snicker from Alex behind her.

When Trey finally opened the gate, he grabbed a flashlight from his bag and slipped it in his hands as he walked towards Devin. "The room where it all happened... is at the end of that tunnel. It's not too late to back out. You can just go home. Tell yourself–"

Trey was cut off by Devin snatching the flashlight out of his hands. He loud out a low whistle and back up, moving toward Frankie. "Ooh... All right." Trey chuckled, wrapping an arm around Frankie's shoulders.

Caitlyn rolled her eyes, turning back to Devin just as CJ walked up to him.

"Hey, hey, bro, you don't have to do this... is what I'm supposed to tell you, but actually, I'm really excited that you're doing this, man, 'cause this is gonna be cool." CJ cheered, like an excited little kid.

Caitlyn looked up at CJ as if he had three heads before she scoffed, pushing him away from Devin with her hip and stepping in front of the Brewer boy. "Then, I'll tell you." Caitlyn said, speaking to Devin, but glaring up at CJ.

CJ shrugged, as if he didn't nothing wrong and Caitlyn rolled her eyes. She turned back to Devin, her expression softer now as she shook her head. "Devin, you don't have to do this. Trey is an asshole. Don't let him get into your head." Caitlyn whispered, taking a step closer to the boy so Trey wouldn't hear her.

Devin felt her heart leap at how close Caitlyn was to him, but he shook his head at her words. "He's not in my head." Devin said, his voice cracking as he spoke.

Caitlyn raised her brows, not believing him after his voice cracked. Instead of questioning it further, Caitlyn sighed. "I just want you to careful. It could be dangerous." She whispered and Devin stared down at the girl in front of him, suddenly at a loss for words.

Before he could try and get any words out, Cece came up behind Caitlyn and gently tapped the shorter girls shoulder. Caitlyn turned around and stepped away from Devin, making the boys shoulders slump.

"Can I steal him for a second?" Cece asked, pointing at her twin right past Caitlyn.

Caitlyn looked back and forth between the twins as a small as she stepped away from Devin, letting Cece stand in front of him. "If you're trying to get him to back out of this too, be my guest." She laughed out dryly. Cece sent Caitlyn a small, but grateful smile before she walked away, leaving her alone with her brother.

Once she was sure Caitlyn was far enough for Caitlyn not to hear her, Cece snapped her head back to Devin. "Look, Devin, this isn't the way to impress a girl." She whispered and Devin, who hadn't looked away form Caitlyn since she walked away, shook his head.

"I mean, she doesn't look impressed right now, but once she sees me walk out of there, I'll be the coolest person ever." Devin tried to explain, a breathless smile on his face as he stared at Caitlyn. When he finally turned back to Cece, his smile was wiped clean when he saw the glare on her face.

"Or the stupidest!" She whisper yelled and Devin sighed, rolling his eyes. He moved around to stand beside his sister and pointed down the tunnel their Uncle Matty disappeared in. "Okay, Cece, it's a room, and it's a tunnel, and I'm gonna walk right in, I'm gonna take a few pictures, and I'm gonna come right back out. Okay?"

Devin moved back around to face Cece, who knew she wasn't gonne be able to talk Devin out of this. She sighed, shaking her head. "Okay, I... I do not approve of this, just so you know, but just be safe." She whispered and Devin nodded.

As he walked into the tunnel, Caitlyn slowly walked up to stand shoulder to shoulder with Cece,  both of them watching Devin get smaller and smaller until he disappeared completely in the hallways darkness.

"He's crazy." Cece blurted, feeling the girl walking up beside her and not even having to turn her head to know who it was. Caitlyn scoffed out a laugh, her arms crossed.

"Yeah, I know." She muttered as she turned to face Cece. "Are you guys gonna be here all summer?" Caitlyn asked, her and Cece both silently agreeing to stay near the entrance of the tunnel incase anything happened.

Cece smiled at the question, turning to face Caitlyn as she nodded her head excitedly. Mostly, Cece was excited about Caitlyn's interest in her and her brothers stay. She wasn't blind, she could see both of them practically fawning over each other all day.

"Yeah, yeah, until August."

Caitlyn smirked, wiggling her eyebrows at the girl. "Will you guys be in town for my birthday?" She asked, pressing her lips together hopefully. Cece squinted for a moment before she smiled at Caitlyn.

"August 3rd, right?" Cece asked and Caitlyn's smile doubled at Cece remembering her birthday. She nodded her head and tried her hardest to conceal her smile so she didn't look too excited. "Yeah, yeah. You know... It's gonna be a big party." Caitlyn hummed, obviously joking.

Cece picked up on the girls sarcasm and raised her eyebrows. "Oh, really?" She asked and Caitlyn nodded, her lips pursed to try and look cool.

"Yep. A total of eight guest." Caitlyn said and Cece laughed, hunching over for a second from Caitlyn's unexpected answer.

As her laughter died down, she looked around the abandoned lot and after counting heads, she realized there were six people there. Cece turned back to Caitlyn with a teasing smile. "You know more than just the people here tonight?" She asked and Caitlyn had to hold back a snort as she answered.

"Yeah, my dad and dog are coming too."

Before Cece could laugh, a loud buzzing echoed throughout the abandoned lot before all the lights shut off.

Caitlyn let out a small shriek, ducking and throwing her hands over her head when sparks flew out of the lights above her and Cece.

"What the hell was that?" Caitlyn whispered as Cece looked around the area. When her eyes landed on Trey, bolt cutters in hand, standing right beside the now broken electrical breakers.

Cece's jaw clenched and she left Caitlyn by the entrance of the tunnel to stomp toward the boy.

"Trey! Turn the lights back on! Are you insane?" She screamed, making everyone else crowd around the two.

Caitlyn slowly walked up to the group, standing closer to Alex as she watched Trey laugh in front of her. "I think I blew the main transformer." He chuckled and Alex scoffed.

"Did you go to college for this?" She asked in a fake interest and Trey rolled his eyes, walking away in annoyance over the fact that everyone was ganging up on his now.

"Comments are closed, Alex!" He yelled as he walked away. Alex rolled her eyes and gave the back of the boys head the finger as Cece walked back toward the tunnel entrance.

"Devin, are you okay?" Cece screamed, her voice echoing through the tunnel. When she didn't get an answer, Cece sighed and turned back tot he rest of the group.

"Cait!" Cece called the girl over, waving frantically. When Caitlyn got up to her, Cece looked back into the tunnel nervously. "I'm gonna go in. Wait here incase I scream, okay?" Cece asked and when she turned back to Caitlyn, she sighed. "You seem to be the only person here with any common sense."

Caitlyn would've laughed or been honored at Cece's comment, but she was too pissed off at Trey and too nervous for Devin to inflect any emotions.

Her arms crossed over her chest as a cold breeze hit and she let out a nervous sigh. "Of course. And– thank you. Sadly, you're right about that last part." Caitlyn muttered, subtly looking around at her friends standing behind her.

She sighed as Cece disappeared into the tunnel just like Devin. Caitlyn dragged her hand down her face and turned around to face her group. Frankie was scolding Trey for destroying the breakers and about ten feet away from the couple was Alex and CJ, laughing at Trey.

"I have a bad feeling about this..." Caitlyn muttered to herself, moving her hands to her hips as she looked up at the powered off lights above her.

"Caitlyn!" Cece's voice echoed down the tunnel and in seconds, Caitlyn was running in, ignoring CJ and Alex screaming at her to stop.

She ignored the way her heart almost leapt out of her chest as she ran down the hallway four teens died in because right now, she needed to help her friends. Caitlyn didn't know how long she was running until she finally found Cece carrying Devin by his arms, the boy barely conscious and stumbling.

"Oh, my God! Devin, are you okay?" Caitlyn screeched, immediately moving to wrap one of his arms over her shoulders to help Cece lead him out of the tunnel.

Instead of answering, Devin groaned, catching everyone's attention as the three of them exited the tunnel.

"Holy crap!" Frankie yelled, running over to help Cece and Caitlyn. She made it to the three of them first and quickly took Devin from Caitlyn's arms so Caitlyn could check and see what the hell happened to Devin.

"He doesn't look okay..." Trey muttered as Caitlyn moved to stand in front of Devin.

Caitlyn could've punched him. She probably would later, but right now, her focus wanted to be on Devin. She gave Trey enough attention to turn her head to him really quickly, not being able to stop the scoff from leaving her lips.

"Didn't notice, Einstein!" She spat, taking Trey aback.

When Devin groaned again, Caitlyn turned back to him, and her heart started to pink up its pace when she finally noticed his stare. He was at least two shades paler and his pupils were completely blown, but what really terrified Caitlyn was the black liquid trailing out of his eyes like tears.

"I think I fell or something." He muttered in pain and Caitlyn cringed, gently cupping his face to lift his head.

"Multiple times? On your face?" Caitlyn asked and Devin's breath hitched when he came face to face with Caitlyn.

"What are you doing?" He groaned and Caitlyn frowned to herself, reassuringly shaking her head.

"I want to be a doctor when I'm older. I'm checking for..." Caitlyn's words slowed. She didn't know what the hell happened to Devin in there so she didn't even know what to look for. Her stomach churned in a panic and she frantically shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know! Anything!"

Her fingers gently wiped away the black liquid dripping from his eyes and Caitlyn felt her heart pump throughout her body in nervousness. Black liquid coming out of someones eyes? Caitlyn's never heard of that before!

"Devin, your eyes..." Caitlyn whispered, pulling her thumb just far enough away from Devin to see the black residue on it. His eyes shut in pain and embarrassment, shaking his head. "Yeah, I think it's, like... like oil or something." He muttered and Caitlyn quickly wiped her hands on her pants, not caring if she just ruined them.

"It shouldn't be coming out of your eyes." She said as if it wasn't hopefully obvious. She moved to take her old spot back from Frankie to hold Devin up and she turned to face Cece on the other side of the boy. "We should go." Caitlyn said, her voice firmer than Cece has ever heard her speak.

The blonde raised her eyebrows as she readjusted her brothers arm around her shoulder. "Caitlyn is now my new favorite person ever. We should go. Like, right now." Cece said in a fake happiness. She gave an even faker smile to the four teens standing in front of her before she looked back to Caitlyn.

"Your car?"

"Of course." Caitlyn said breathlessly, already starting to walk toward her car, ultimately dragging Cece and Devin with her.

Caitlyn ignored Alex and CJ screaming her name and looked up at Cece "Where do you want to take him? The hospital?" She asked and Cece stared down at her brother for a few seconds before she sighed and shook her head. "Just home." She answered and Caitlyn raised her eyebrows.

"Are you sure?" She asked, thinking there was no way anyone in their right minds would see Devin's state and think he was okay enough to just go home.

But Cece proved her wrong because she nodded her head and gave Caitlyn a tired smile. "Yeah. You still live two doors down, right?" She asked and Caitlyn snickered under her breath, rolling her eyes as they reached her car.

She quickly unlocked it with her keys connected to her belt loop as she and Cece helped Devin into the passenger seat. "My dad's never leaving that house with rent control." Caitlyn muttered as she leaned over Devin, who was barely conscious, to buckle his seatbelt.

Once he was safely in the car, Caitlyn closed the door and looked up at Cece. She gave Caitlyn a small but nervous smile as she took a step back, her hand finding the door handle to the backseat. "Then, I'll call you if anything." Cece said, climbing into the backseat of Caitlyn's car and slamming the door shut behind her.

Caitlyn stayed in her spot, her hands on her hips as she tried to catch her breath. "What did I just get myself into?" She breathed out as she walked toward the drivers side of her car.
