Prologue

The sky was covered with heavy clouds. The moon was hiding behind the clouds. The flush green trees of the forest rustled.  Occasionally, there were  distant thunders, but they were too far away and hardly audible.

Long shadows were projected on the forest floor by the light provided by the moon behind the clouds. There was darkness everywhere.

In middle of the forest was a man standing motionless. He stared at the body at his feet. The body was pulled here by him.

The corpse looked like it was seeking something even in death. Its lifeless eyes looked up at the sky.

The man picked up a can of gasoline and opened it. He poured the liquid all over the corpse. Every move of his was slow and skilled.

He was clever enough to put on gloves to ensure there were no traces, no fingerprints. He pulled out the lighter and lit it.

There was no going back.

He let the lighter fall. There was silence for a moment. Then—whoosh. In seconds, the body was burning with the raging fire. The air was hot, and the the colour from the flame illuminated the trees nearby.

The man remained still. He just remained there watching everything get  destroyed by the flames. His face was expressionless. No regret. No respite. Just acceptance.

Then it started to rain.

It fell softly at first. It started becoming heavier. Steam curled into the air as the raindrops struck the flame. The flames dimmed slowly. Then gradually disappeared.

There was nothing left. Not a trace. Only ash, mixing with the wet earth.

He took one last look back and turned to leave.

He walked slowly at first, then quickly, then slowly again. He looked unsure if he had to run away or wander. He continued even though his chest tightened with each step.

He never looked back.

And there he left the body.
