005
A small smile graces my expression as I stare at the sixteen-year-old girl with a broken leg.
"What happened?" I inquire.
"She fell out of a tree," the father responds. He glares at his daughter.
I smile. "That's not entirely unusual, except for the fact that Miss Platt here is sixteen. Not seven." I check the clipboard in my hands. "Dr. Cullen should be ready to see you in a few minutes."
"What about the local doctor?" the mother asks.
"He's out of town, unfortunately. But my brother is as good as any, I can assure you."
I leave the room, grabbing Carlisle's attention. He follows me into the room where Esme Anne Platt sits on a hospital bed.
Carlisle smiles. "What happened?"
"We've already told the nurse," Mr. Platt snaps.
"Miss Platt here has broken her leg falling from a tree," I explain, another small smile of amusement dancing over my face.
"Ah," Carlisle says. "Well, then, Miss Platt, it appears you will need to have a cast."
The girl frowns. "Okay."
~~~
I grab Carlisle's arm. "She is your mate," I say, so low that I can barely hear myself.
"I know," he responds with the same volume.
"You can just leave? You looked her in the eye!"
"I know," he repeats. "I'm not you, Sparrow." He breaks my hand off of his arm.
I sigh. "You can let her go, but Carlisle, eventually you'll find that you hate yourself for leaving."
"That's how you feel about Alec?"
We walk down the hallway together, talking so quietly it appears we aren't speaking at all.
"It is," I say, voice losing whatever edge it previously had had.
"I'll survive. Maybe we'll meet again in the future."
I shake my head. "Highly doubtful, as she is human. No vampire will come across her and turn her unless you do."
We break off to change out of our scrubs. Our shift has just ended so we are heading back home.
As I get in the car, he tells me, "We need to leave again, Sparrow. Head to another town."
"Where?" I ask.
"Chicago," he responds.
"Are we going by human means?"
"Yes. It will be a road trip."
"Road trip implies that we are coming back. We both know we will not be."
"Not for a while," Carlisle agrees. "Maybe a good few decades where everyone will forget."
"Not likely," I warn. "Some humans hold onto memories. I believe that girl will be clinging to her memories of us for a very long time."
Carlisle smiles. "Then so be it."
He pulls into our driveway. I speed to my room where o pack everything up. I turn my bag and flute into charms and go to Carlisle's room. Very rarely will we ever go into our rooms for anything other than changing.
Carlisle is standing by the car again when I finally pull on my coat after convincing myself that wearing Alec's cloak is a bad idea. I slide into the passenger's seat. Carlisle smiles at me. I take my flute back off of my bracelet and begin to play, just to entertain Carlisle and myself.
In the shining moonlight, Pierrot stands at night...
Hello, hello! How are you all today? I'm doing great so far, but considering it's morning, I won't trust it to last.
