It is 1950.
There is a petite vampire and a tall blond that I faintly recognize.
I study him. His eyes flash with something I cannot place. He looks around. I think he is avoiding my eyes. I drop my gaze to my flute.
I am not sure what I recognize him from, and so I flip through time like a photo album. My memories lock on the Civil War, April 23, 1863. Carlisle and I had been in Texas. We'd encountered a young Confederate soldier. He was just trying to make his family proud. I couldn't place the emotion in his eyes when I'd asked him if what he was doing was what he really wanted to do. But he'd replied that he didn't want that.
"Major," I murmur. His eyes lock on mine.
"Miss Cullen."
"Major Jasper Whitlock," I say. "You said you didn't want to do what you did."
He flinches.
"I see now that you have become a seer's mate. Congratulations, I'm sure she saw you coming."
The petite vampire smiles. "I'm Alice," she chirps.
I smile. "I am Sparrow. This is my family."
Carlisle steps forward. "I'm Carlisle Cullen. This is Esme, my wife, Edward and Emmett, my adopted sons, Rosalie, my adopted daughter, and Sparrow, my sister."
I glance at Alice. Then I cast a spell that lets me live in the past, present, and future for an hour, all at once.
I spin through time, flickering to when we go back to Forks. A girl. Edward's bloodsinger. Alec. Canada. Then I go far back. All the way to Summer. I smile sadly to myself as I see her. Her eyes are sad but bright. Her son. She dies in childbirth for her third child—a daughter. Named for me. Autumn.
She looks up to the sky as she dies.
"Watch over my daughter."
My mind goes through time as I follow Autumn's path. I gasp as I lurch back to the present.
"I did not watch over her daughter," I whisper to myself. Edward is staring at me sadly as I make a connection.
"Mary Alice. I am so sorry, Summer. I did not do it right..."
I shake my head.
"Alice..."
Alice looks at me.
"I am sorry. I should have been there for you... they killed you. They said you were insane... you went to an asylum. I should have been there."
She frowns. "What?"
"You... you are my niece. Autumn."
"My name—?"
"My niece. Your name... Mary Alice. I am sorry."
I push off the couch and leave the house. I go outside, wallowing in guilt. I had been there did my sister all her life... until she died at thirty-nine. And she had asked me to watch over her baby girl. But I let time pass without me.
Alice looks just like her.
I fall to my knees on the forest ground, sobs wracking my body.
"Summer..." my voice cracks. "I failed you... forgive me."
I clutch Summer's favorite doll to my chest. I hold it gingerly, as if I would destroy her memory if I even let a scratch appear.
I feel a wind and suddenly Rosalie is hugging me. I am sobbing against her, the doll held between us.
"Summer..." I whisper.
She carries me back to the house and hands me off to Carlisle gently. Jasper and Alice have been shown their room by Esme so Carlisle can carry me to my room without them watching.
I weakly push on his chest as he sits on my bed with me against him.
"I... I failed her..."
The only thing my sister asked of me I had failed to do.
His held me tighter. "It's okay. You can still help Alice remember, okay?"
I nod. I can do that. I nod again. I can do that. I am okay now. I can still fulfill her request. I watch over her baby's granddaughter.
I can do that.
I realized I'd been neglecting Summer and she had a face claim... so this.
