My peaceful sleep was startled awake by noises from down stairs. Slowly I got up and took my pajamas off and put on clean clothes.
I walked down staris careful not to trip and fall. When I walked into the kitchen where all the noise was at, I saw Jackie laughing. I sat down next to her, but she didn't seem to notice me.
"Morning?" I asked confused at what she was laughing at. No one else was in the kitchen but her and me. When she turned to face me she stopped laughing a little to talk to me.
"Hey, sleeping Beauty." She looked up at me and smiled. She pushed a plate with toast on it towards me.
"What's so funny?"I grabbed the piece of toast and bit into it. It was cold and stale, but I ate it anyways.
"My dad, he was just in here. He stuck a blueberry up his nose and he couldent get it out." Towards the end of the sentence she started into her fit of laughter again.
"Jackie, your dad's weird." She shrugged her shoulders and took the last bite of my toast. I rolled my eyes playfully and smiled at her immature smirk.
"What the hell is all this fucking noise about?" Me and Jackie both turned around to see a half asleep Lucas. His hair was a mess and he was rubbing the eye gunk out of his eyes.
"Lucas!" Jackie quickly got out of her seat and ran to bear hug her brother. He looked startled by her attack but he soon wrapped his arms around her.
"When did you get here? I'm happy to see you." She pulled back but kept her arms around his shoulders.
"Umm...like around midnight. And I'm happy to see you too dork." He pulled away and Jackie took a step back. She turned to me and looked like she forgot I was in the room.
"Oh! Clare this is Lucas, my brother." I nodded my head and smiled lighty.
"Yeah, we meet last night." She stopped smiling and looked at me confused. Lucas just rolled his eyes at me and walked behind me towards the fridge.
"What?" Jackie said looking at the back of Lucas then towards me.
"Oh, I was in the kitchen getting something to drink when he got here." I quickly pointed to Lucas as he turned around with orange juice.
He looked at me for a moment, no glare or scowl but just a glance over me. It made me feel uncomfortable. I didn't smile or say anything to him but just turned back around to face Jackie. She didn't seem to notice the awkward moment between Lucas and me.
"Oh, okay. So well I guess you know Clare." She smiled at him but like last night he didn't show any emotion and just shrugged his shoulders.
"Yeah, I met the wonderful Clare." He said sarcastically. I don't think it was intended for anyone to hear, but I did. What's is his problem with me?
"So Lucas, do you wanna help us set up chairs." Jackie said this as more of a statement then a question. They both looked at each other and Lucas crossed his arms at Jackie. He frowned at her and she rolled her eyes. They looked like they were talking to each other inside their heads.
"You better go get dressed, Lucas. Clare and I are going to go start setting stuff up out side." Jackie said grabbing my hand.
"Whatever." Lucas mumbled before walking out of the room with a glass of orange juice in hand. Jackie rolled her eyes at him and we both walked out into the backyard.
"Well...he seems-"
"Like a little ray of damn sunshine." Jackie inturupted me. She turned to me and smiled at her sarcastic comment.
"Yep." I popped the "p". Jackie opened the door for outside. It was warm outside. Some of the chairs and tables were wet from the rain last night.
"He's pretty moody, but you just get use to it." I nodded my head and grabbed a couple of chairs and set them around a table.
"So, when is your family gonna get here?" She set down a bowl of punch with the rest of the food.
"In a hour or so."
I didn't reply and just continued to set up chairs and set cut up food on the table. Lucas never came out and helped us but I think Jackie preferred that. She seemed happy with seeing him, but I don't think she really wanted to be around him right now. Something weird is going on with them. She was happy to see him, but when they started talking it was like they couldn't stand each other. I know she loves her brother, but something bad had happened between them. A blind man could see that. The air was thick between them.
Jackie told me her mom and dad left to go get something at the store. She asked me when Sid was coming and I told her Sid would be here later. When we finished getting everything out it was around one.
Jackie and I decided to sit on the couch and watch a movie until people got here. The movie played on but I could tell neither me or Jackie were paying attention to the movie. We both had other things on our mind.
Luckily we were both startled from our thoughts by the sound of a car pulling into the drive way.
There was a knock on the door. Jackie got up from her seat and answered the door. She opened it and reviled her grandparents, a bright smile took over her face. I got up from my seat to greet them at the door.
They were an old couple, and they fought like an old couple. They were always going at it. But it wasn't like they were serious, it was cute. They played around with each other until one of them started laughing at their little fight. Mrs. Wilson was my hight and always wore bright colors. Her hair was grey, and her eyes were bright blue. Like Mrs. Lakewood she had freckles scattered all over her. Mr. Wilson was tall but in his old age he became hunchbacked. His eyes always looked happy. It's odd to describe someone's eyes as happy, but that's just the way they were. We made our way outside.
After a couple of minutes more and more people showed up. Most of them were people I didn't know. Jackie made her way to talk to people, but I stayed close to her grandparents, I occasionally joined in on the conversation the two were having. Jackies parents came home after her grandparents got here and like Jackie they made their way around to talk to everyone.
I felt out of place in the yard. I knew no one and no one knew me. No one bothered to ask my name, except when they came over to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. I scanned the crowd trying to find someone else I knew. But I couldent find her Uncle or Aunt anywhere. I got awkward smiles as people walked by me and I wanted to disappear even more.
I tried to ingore the feeling and think of other things. Lucas has been gone for a while. If he was here I'd at least try make conversation with him. Even with all the rude replys.
Finally I had enough of the fake smiles and awkward hellos. I walked into the kitchen looking for something to snack on. But instead I found a pile of dishes.
When you find something out of place it bugs you. It makes you feel sick inside, and you can't help but stare at the out of place thing. It makes you want to run away until it's fixed. So when you see an out of place thing, you can't help but fix it.
I opened the dishwasher and started to load rinsed dishes into the dishwasher. I have nothing better to do, and Mrs. Lakewood shouldn't have to worry about dirty dishes. My mind drifted away and I forgot about everything. I forgot about Jacob, or the fight, or my mom, or anything. It was just me.
"What the hell are you doing?" I turned around and saw Lucas looking at me with a funny expression.
Out of the few times that I have spoken to him I never really looked at his features. I only looked at him long enough to see he had brown hair, he was tall, and he had green eyes. But when you really look at him you see how handsome he is. His jaw and cheek bones stuck out just enough to make his facial features slim and stunning. His eyes were dark and light green at the same time. His hair was a mess but it didn't look bad, it just looked like he ran his hand threw his hair one to many times. But his body is what would make any girl swon. Of course that is until he opens his mouth.
"I'm just doing the dishes." I said pointing towards the now empty sink.
He looked at me with a 'duh' like look on his face.
"Why the hell are you doing the dishes?" He stayed planted at the entrance to the kitchen.
"Does it freaking matter?" I suprised myself by my comment. I also suprised Lucas by the look on his face.
"What?"
I lifted my eyebrows and put my hand on my hips. I'm tired of his rudeness. I've done nothing to him. He can't just act like everyones below him just because he's in a mood. I have just met him, but I could tell he couldn't stand me.
"I said I'm doing the damn dishes and it doesn't consern you. Now can you go act like an ass to someone else." He crossed his arms and smirked at me. I frowned at his expression.
"Looks like Miss. Sweetheart has an attitude." He continued to smirk down at me.
I rolled my eyes and tried to finsh putting the rest of the dishes away, ingoreing his presence. "At least I don't have a stick up my ass." I muttered to myself.
I knew he heard me because he grunted and walked out. After I put the soap in the dishwasher and closed it I walked back out. Jackies dad had hamburgers on the grill. People seemed to have found places to sit at, and it seemed more calm the earlier. I found Jackie next to the bond fire and talking to her grandma. I smiled up at her and she scooted over on the bench for me to sit on. I looked up to see Lucas and another man playing catch with a football. I rolled my eyes at him. Jackie cought my action and raised her eyebrows in confusion.
"I'll tell you later." I whispered.
"Where did you go?" She asked me. She stood up and I followed her action.
"Oh..Um. I just went inside." She looked at me with a doubtful face. I smiled at her and she shook her head. She can see right threw me and my lies.
"When is Sid coming?" We stopped at the food table and Jackie grabbed a plate and piled it a mile high with food.
"Well anytime now." I poured some water into my cup. When we were both done we started to make our way back towards the bonfire.
"Hey! Watch out!" I turned around at the man playing catch with Lucas when he yelled at me. I was confused at first what he meant but then Lucas ran into me causing us both to tumble to the ground. The football he was trying to catch hit me in my face, and Lucas landed on top of me. All his weight on top of me made me grunt in pain.
It took us both a moment to realize what just happened. Lucas quickly rolled to the side laughing. I held my face which was bleeding from when the ball hit me.
We both laid side by side on the ground. I looked over towards him. He was laughing with his eyes closed. I wanted to be mad, but I smiled instead because I couldent help it.
"Ouch." I muttered. I slowly got up and held my nose.
I looked at Jackie, who was laughing but grabbed me a napkin. I held my nose with the napkin in hand.
I looked over towards Lucas who had gotten up, a smirk had formed on his face.
"Are you okay?" He laughed and brushed the dirt off his pants. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Thanks for your consern." I turned towards Jackie and lifted the napkin off my nose. My bloody nose had stopped. I looked up to see the crowd of people smiling.
"I'm gonna go to the barhroom." Jacket nodded and followed me to the bathroom. My arm was scratched but it's not like I broke it. Jackie gave me some band-aids to put on it.
"I'll go get you a knew shirt." I looked down to see that my water had spilt all over my shirt. I smiled and she started laughing.
"Shut up. Get out of here." I pushed her out and rolled my eyes. I washed the blood off my lip and chin.
After a minute of being alone in the bathroom I tried to clean the dirt off of me.
"Sorry." I turned around to see Lucas at the door frame. He had a blank expression. I couldent tell if he was being serious or not. He was too hard to read.
I nodded my head and smiled at him. "Its fine."
"Maybe you should watch where your going next time." He said. I turn around but to my suprise he left.
What is with this guy?
