The wind picked up and I shivered. I pulled my sweatshirt closer to my body. The fire provided little heat as it slowly died out.
I looked up to the clothes line we had to hang up to put our wet clothes on. The clothes were still dripping wet. Everyone had gone to bed except me and Jackie. Unlike most nights I could tell as soon as my head hit the pillow I would be out. I was passed tired. The only way I could stay up was by staring into the fire. The light kept me up. I could tell Jackie felt the same way. Yet, neither one of us spoke up to go to bed. Jackie rambled on about something but I couldn't focus on what she was saying.
"I've got an idea." I turned around to see Jackie smiling at me. Her eyes held bags underneath them.
"Hm?" I asked not really bothering to listen fully.
"Do you want to pull a prank on the boys?" I looked over her and shrugged my shoulders.
"What are we gonna do?" I asked her. I have no problem with pranking the two. After Lucas had pushed me in the lake he went back to sit by the tents. I didn't talk to him for the rest of the night.
"Well, I'm not sure? We can write on their faces." I shook my head at her idea.
"No, it's got to be something good." I looked up at the stars to marvel at their beauty.
"Well what do you want to do, throw them in the lake?" She replied sarcastically. I instantly turned around at her idea. She looked at me confused for a minute before rolling her eyes.
"I was joking Clare. We can't throw them in the lake." She picked up a stick and started to stick it in the fire. The fire had died out. It was almost pitch black out side.
I smiled at her and folded my arms over my chest. I stood up from the chair I was sitting in. "No, but we can do something else." I paused. She stood up beside me. She rose both of her eyebrows waiting for me to go on with my idea. "Jackie they are sleeping on air mattress." She didn't get what I was saying. I pointed towards the lake them back at the tent Lucas and Alex were in.
Her eyes lit up. It was like a light bulb turned on in her head. She gave me a mischievous smile and nodded her head. We didn't say another word to each other. Quietly we walked towards the tent. I could hear soft snores coming from the two. Jackie and I gave one last look at each other. She had a huge smile on her face. She lifted her hand up to her mouth trying not to let out a laugh. I rolled my eyes at her. I bent down and slowly unzipped the tent. My hand shook as I opend the flaps to their tent. I felt like I was jumping of a bridge.
They looked peaceful sleeping. I looked over Lucas face, he looked like he had no worries at all. He looked peaceful, not angry. Even sleeping he still looked good. I looked over Alex, I let out a small snort when I saw the trail of drool coming from his mouth. Jackie hit the side of my arm and put a finger on her lips. I gave a slight sorry smile before walking around to Alex's side. I looked for a handle to grab onto. Jackie did the same on the other side.
Suddenly a mumble from Alex startled us both. He rubbed his eyes and looked at me to Jackie. "What the hell are you doing?" He sat up careful not to wake up Lucas. Me and Jackie froze in our positions.
Nor Jackie or I knew what to say. I gave an awkward smile to him. He looked at us and a small smile formed on his lips. I looked back up at Jackie. "How about one out of two?" She smiled and I looked back down at Alex.
"Hey Alex, help us carry the air mattress outsids." Jackie said quietly not to wake up Lucas.
He didn't respond at first, but after a couple of seconds he broke out into his usual grin and got off the air mattress. I found a handle. I looked at Jackie and saw that she was ready. Alex pulled the side of the tent so we could squeeze the mattress threw. When we got out Alex helped us push the mattress towards the lake. I felt fully awake now.
"Damn, what the fuck is he eating?" Alex said in a loud whisper. We continued to push the mattress towards the lake. It was heavy with all the weight from Lucas.
Soon enough we reached the lake. We stoped at the shore. The water splashed over my feet. The mattress was moving from the waves. Jackie and I shared a worried glance. "Should we really do this? He could fall off and drown." I asked looking at Jackie to see her debating. I was surprised that Lucas didn't move or groan with all the noise we were making.
"Hell yeah we are doing this. I didn't drag his ass all the way over here for nothing." Alex rolled his eyes. It was as if what Alex said made all our doubts disappear.
"Wait. I've got to get something." Jackie said right as we were about to put the mattress in. She smiled and ran towards her dads truck. She reached in the backseat and grabbed something. She turned around and held the odject up in the air so we could see it. It was a long rope. She rand back towards us. She smiled at us.
She didn't say a word but lend back down towards the handle on the mattress. She tied a tight knot around it. She stood back up with the rope in her hand. She walked over to a tree limb and tied another knot onto the tree. Jackie turned back around and put her hands on her hips. She nodded her head signaling for us to go on. Alex and I slowly pushed the mattress in. It slid right into the water with no noise. It slowly moved out away from the shore.
When he was far enough away we all broke out into laughter. I sat down on the ground holding my stomach. This was the first time in a while that I have laughed this hard. Alex and Jackie soon sat down next to me. When I stoped laughing I opened my eyes and looked at the sky. Alex turned his head to look at us.
"He is going to kill us when he wakes up." Alex laid down fully on the ground and closed his eyes.
I did the same and soon did Jackie. For the rest of the night we laid under the night sky. No one fell asleep. No one spoke a word. No one moved. We just laid in silence. It was a good feeling. I felt like all my problems had disappeared and I had nothing to worry about.
Night soon turned into morning. The sun had started to rise and light made me open my eyes. The first thing I saw was Lucas still sleeping unaware of his wearabouts. I saw now why Jackie had tired the rope to the mattress. The bed had floated to the middle of the small lake and if it wasn't for the rope he would have drifted away. I smiled to my self and nudged Jackie. She smiled but didn't reply.
"Get up." I stood up and streached. Alex opened his eyes.
I tried to wipe the sand off my back. Alex got up and walked back to the tent. "I'm serious. Lucas is going to kill us." Alex yelled from the inside of his tent. I rolled my eyes and walked towards the tent. I grabbed a bottle of water and took a drink out of it. The water was warm, it tasted gross. I set the water back down not wanting to taste it another second longer. I changed my clothes and walk back out side to see Jackies parent up.
"Good morning Clare." I smiled at Jackies mom. Alex walked out of his tent with a smirk. "Hey, Alex, can you wake up Luke. We are going to go eat at the restaurant in town. " He stoped in his tracks and his smirk fell. He looked at me and I tried to hide my smile. He narrowed his eyes at me seeing right passed my fake frown.
"Yeah sure. You guys go ahead. I'll just...wait for him." He drifted of. He looked at the lake from the corner of his eye. He turned around and went back inside the tent.
"Okay, you two girls coming?" I looked over to see Jackie had gotten up from the sand.
"Yeah." Jackie answered for me.
Mr. Lakewood clapped his hands together and started walking with us towards the stores. The air was humid. As we walked on the side of the sidewalk I saw other campers start walking towards the small stores. Mr. Lakewood started talking to Jackie, but I didn't pay any attention to the conversation. The walk was short.
I opened the door to the small restaurant Mr. Lakewood had mentioned earlier. The door was old and looked like if you pushed hard enough it will fall of its hinges. I looked around the restaurant to see it was almost completely empty except for a couple of people at the counter. Behind the counter was an old women and in front of the counter were two old men. They were talking to the lady and laughing. They looked like they were having a good time just talking. We sat down at a small table. There were only two other tables that only held two seats. The rest were booths with holes in the red seats. The tables were wobbly and had old green designs on the top. The pale cream colored paint looked like they had just repainted. It was the only new looking thing in here. The restaurant looked like it had seen better days. But it felt warm and loving in here.
I was woken from my thoughts by a loud swing of the door opening. Everyone looked up to see Alex and Lucas. As soon as I saw him I smirked. Jackie started laughing. Alex tried to hide his smile when Lucas glared at him. Lucas's glare soon turned to be directed in my direction. His hands were in fists, his hair was soaked and drips of water were on his face. His face was in a scowl. His eyes stared directly into mine. He changed his clothes into new ones which stuck to his body from being wet. My smirk didn't drop.
He slowly walked up towards the table. Mr. Lakewood and Mrs. Lakewood didn't notice what was going on. Alex walked behind him. He held his hand over his mouth from laughing. Lucas roughly pulled the chair across from me out. He sat down in it not taking his eyes off of mine. Alex sat down next to Mr. Lakewood.
"Well did someone wake up on the wrong side of the lake this morning?" I asked Lucas. He gave me a sarcastic smile and rolled his eyes.
He didn't anwser back. The old lady that was behind the counter when we first came in held menus in her hand and smiled at us. "Good morning folks. Will there be anyone else going you guys?" Mr. Lakewood shook his head and smiled back at the lady. "Okay, here are you menus. The special today is our home made biscuits and gravy. What does everyone want to drink?" She went around the table asking everyone what they wanted to drink.
The restaurant was warm and loving, but Lucas glaring at everyone and everything made it tense. She left our table and went into the kitchen. I turned back to look at Lucas. I crossed my arms and smiled at him. "You know, I really was right. Look I'm even smiling now." Lucas twitched and it looked like he was about to yell at me. Instead he crossed his arms and looked out the window.
I looked over at Jackie to see she had wide eyes watching me and Lucas. "Your a dead man."
