Chapter Eight

The next morning, Newt woke up early, at sunrise. He got out of bed and smoothed his crumpled clothes from the day before. Grabbing his coat, shoes, and creature-less suitcase, he left.

Newt stopped at Jacob's bakery, where there was currently an assistant serving up the treats. He quietly ordered a pastry and pushed some crumpled bills onto the counter.

Newt took his niffler-shaped pastry and left the bakery. He took a bite, closing his eyes as a very small smile appeared on his face. There wasn't anything better than a warm, decadent pastry from Kowalski's.

As he walked, he finished the pastry. He sadly looked down at his empty hand. No more niffler-shaped treats, it was back to reality.

By now, the sun had fully risen. The sunlight had truly illuminated New York. In a nearby pond, coins at the bottom glistened as if they were gold. The sun streamed in the windows of shops, making the customers smile as the warm sun hit their faces.

It was odd, Newt thought, that the weather could be so beautiful while one person's life was falling apart. Shouldn't it be raining, with thunder and lightning?

At last, Newt stopped at his destination. He walked up to the ticket counter and asked, "Excuse me, when does the next ferry back to Britain leave?"

"In 'bout two 'ours," the ticket seller drawled, lighting his cigarette. Newt nodded. "Th-that'll be fine, thank you." He fished the last few dollar bills from his coat packet, and placed them on the counter. The man slid the ticket to him blew a stream of smoke into Newt's face.

Ticket in hand, Newt settled on a bench to wait. While he waited, he thought of what had happened. What he had done.  Newt ended up hating himself even more.

At last, the ferry pulled into the dock. Newt sighed, stood up, and adjusted his coat. Grabbing his suitcase, he walked toward the boat.

"Wait!" Someone grabbed ahold of his coat. Newt spun around. "Jacob?! W-what are you doing here?!" Jacob bent over, panting heavily. He wiped his sweaty forehead on his sleeve. "Newt...
I've... we've been looking...." Jacob trailed off, out of breath.

"Look, Jacob, er, that's kind of you, but I know when I'm not wanted. I need to leave." "No," Jacob shook his head. "No. I did not just run all around the whole New York City searching for you, just so you can run off on a boat."

The ferry's horn whistled. It would be leaving shortly. Newt started to panic. "No, Jacob, please. You have to let me go, I can't stay. I mean, look at what I've done, Tina hates me, I've practically cheated on her. You and Queenie hate me now too... I can't face Tina, if she ever lays eyes on me again, she'd slice me into a thousand little pieces--" The boat's horn blared again.

"Nope, you're staying. Running away from your problems won't help a thing. Besides, your own philosophy is that if you worry, you suffer twice."

Newt mumbled something nasty under his breath. Jacob snatched Newt's ticket out of his hand and ripped it in half, right before his eyes. "What?! No!" Newt protested.

Jacob shrugged, ignoring Newt's glare. Newt continued to glare. And glare. And glare.

"I'll pay you back," Jacob said innocently.
