Chapter Seven

Newt tiptoed past Mrs. Esposito and quietly walked up the stairs, trying to listen to see if Tina was filling Queenie and Jacob in about his crime. After listening for a moment, he heard nothing, and entered the room.

From Jacob and Queenie's expressions, Newt could tell they already knew. They both looked at him, their faces full of disappointment. They quickly looked down once again, Jacob reading a newspaper, and Queenie charming dishes to wash themselves. Tina was nowhere to be seen.

Newt stepped in, and went over to the table where Jacob was sitting. "May I sit--" Jacob nodded. "Thanks," Newt mumbled.

The kitchen was silent. So quiet that you could hear a pin drop. The only noise was the swish swish of the sponge cleaning the dishes and the gentle ticking of the clock.

At last, Newt spoke. "Look, it's not what it seems like, really, I didn't--" he was silenced by their glares. "Oh, alright," Newt mumbled. He stood up and stormed off to his bedroom.

About to enter the room, Newt stopped. He heard sobbing behind the door. Tina was in there. He quickly and quietly entered.

Tina was sitting on Newt's bed, sobbing uncontrollably. Her face was streaked with tears, and in her hand, she was clutching Newt's scarf. She looked up as he entered and her face immediately darkened, but she didn't move.

Newt gingerly walked over and sat on the bed. Tina scooted away. He cleared his throat. "Tina, I--" "Save it," Tina growled, stomping out of the room.

Sighing, Newt curled up in his bed, not bothering to change into his pajamas. Tears started to roll down his cheeks for the first time in a very, very, long time.
