Frankenstein - an adaption of a novel by Mary Shelley
My dear sister,
Is long voyage has been so terribly lonely. The chilling frost and snow here in the Arctic completely surround our ship.
Three weaks ago, a remarkable thing happened. We saw a huge, ugly creature driving a sled pulled dogs and racing north. The next morning, we saw a different dogsled drifting toward us on a sheet of ice. The poor dogs were dead, and the weary driver was barely alive. He wouldn't accept our help until we told him we were heading north.
The stranger will tell me his story tomorrow. I will record it and spend it to you.
The Stranger's Story
My name is Victor Frankenstein. I created an evil monster. The terrible things that the creature has done are all because of me. No one else must ever know how to do what I have done - I will tkae secret with me to my grave.
After many years of study, I had discovered how to bring something to life. I was eager to use what I had learned, so I devoted two years to making a new creature out of bones and body parts of graveyard and slaughterhouses.
At last, my experiment was ready. An enormous, lifeless creature lay on the table in my lab. I thought my creation would show the world what a great scientist I was. I didn't know how wrong I was!
That cold November night, I brought my creature to life. I remember thr moment his black lips moved. His skin, stretched and sewn together, quivered. He took a rasping breath and opened his watery, yellow eyes. Then that repulsive creature sat up and looked at me.
Instead of feeling proud, I was disgusted. I couldn't even stand to look at him. So I ran away, asking mysefl, What I have done?
I hid my room and nervously paced the floor, trying to determine what to do. But, because I had been hard at work for so long, I had not slumbered for many days, and I soon fell onto my bed and slept.
An odd, gurgling noise woke me up. The terrible creature was standing over me, grinning and making baby noise. He came closer and reached out one of his enormous hands to touch me. I leapt up and ran until I crumpled onto the street. A good friend found me and took me to his home. I lay there, sich for several months.
Much later, I learned what had happened to my creature while I was unwell.
He had wandered the street. He was a newborn - a hideous, giant newborn. He knew nothing, he could talk, and he did not even understand his own feelings.
People who saw him were terrified. Some people ran away screaming. Others threw stones and bricks at him. One man shot him in the arm.
The frightened, lonely creature hid in a vacant shed next to a cottage. He taught himsefl to speak and read by listening to the family in the cottage. Then he learned that I was his creator.
He found me and begged me for a companion. I felt sorry for him, so I agreed to creat a wife for him. But when it came time to bring the female creature to life, I couldn't do it. I destroyed her instead. He was very angry and promised to make my life as unhappy as his life was. I was now his enemy.
The creature terrorized me for many years. First he found and killed my best friend. Finally he killed my sweet bride on our wedding night. I vowed to stop this horrible beast.
I searched the world for him, and he has led me to this frozen land. But I have become weak from chasing him, and I know I am dying.
Now I relized I was srong tl create the monster and then abandon him. Now I know his mistery is my falt, not his.
My dear sister,
What do you think of the man's fantastic story? At first, I didn't believe him, but now I do because I met the creature.
After Victor Frankenstein died, and I saw him standing over Frankenstein's lifeless body. He wept as he told me about his lonely life. He regretted that he took people's lives, but he blamed his wickedness on the way he had been treated - that no one had ever loved him. Now that his creator was gone, he wanted to disappear in the Arctic wasteland.
Then he jumped off the ship and landed on a small sheet of ice. The waves soon carried him away, and he vanished in the darkness.
