4 || The Quiet Bagger
It had been almost a week since Piper arrived in the Glen. She worked every job for the last few days except as a Bagger and as a Runner. She had been counting the days since showing up, wanting to know how long they would be here until someone found a way out. But until then, her routine was going to be nothing but work all day and every day. She made new friends while working a different job each day. Overall, Piper was getting used to living in the Glen.
One morning, Piper woke up when she felt the sun hit my face. She opened her eyes and squinted at the light. She got out of her hammock, stretching her arms and looking out at the Glen. Like every morning when she woke up, everything was empty and quiet. It was only like that for so long until the other Glenners began to stir awake.
Piper suddenly heard the Doors to the Maze open. Maeve and Claire ran across the Glen and didn't hesitate to enter inside the Maze. It worried her that one of them, or even both of them, wouldn't make it back before the Doors closed for the night. After all, no one had ever survived a night in the Maze, just like Sonya said.
It wasn't long before everyone else started to wake up. Piper began to follow some of the girls that were already walking toward the Homebase. The Cooks had breakfast ready to be served as soon as they got there. She filled up her plate with fruit and went to a table, sitting next to her new friends.
"So, who thinks today's the day?" Mary asked the other girls. She was the Keeper of the Planters.
"That we finally leave the Glen for good?" Cora spoke up, letting out a scoff. "We've been waiting to leave this place for two years. You'd think Maeve would've found a way out by now."
"But the Maze changes every night, so it must be hard for Maeve to retrace her steps from the day before," Piper added.
"Well, if anyone can figure it out, it's Mae," Mary said. "She's a smart girl. She'll get us out of here soon."
Cora scoffed. "Yeah, right. You've been saying that for two years, Mary."
Piper didn't add a comment. Instead, she let someone else start a new conversation while she sat there and ate what was left on her plate. She looked over at the other tables and observed the other Glenners.
First, Piper saw Harriet and Sonya sitting with Esther and some other Builders. At the next table, she spotted Beth and Gwyneth with more Builders and a couple of Medics. But the one person that caught her eye was Lillie.
Lillie was sitting at a table with the other Baggers, distancing herself from them a little bit. While the Baggers were talking and laughing, she was sitting at the end of the table, not saying a word or looking at anyone while quietly eating her food.
"What do you guys know about Lillie?" Piper asked the Planters. She heard some stuff about her from Sonya on my first day, but she wanted to hear what the others had to say about her.
"Not that much," Mary answered. "She keeps her mouth shut and doesn't bother anyone. The other Baggers say that she's not really a problem."
"Although, Beth likes to mess with her sometimes," Cora added.
"That doesn't surprise me," Piper mumbled under her breath. Once breakfast was over, she took she plate to the Cooks and walked out of the Homebase.
Today, Piper was going to be a Bagger. She went to the Gardens and waited for the Keeper of the Baggers, Emily, to show up. She looked over to see a Glenner picking up a basket full of vegetables, who was probably taking it to the Kitchens for the Cooks. Piper watched as she got about halfway to the Kitchens when she dropped the basket. Before Piper could run over there and help her, Lillie beat her to it, quickly picking up the vegetables that fell out and put them back inside the basket. The Glenner thanked her and Lillie gave her a nod in return. Then, she quickly made her way back to the Homebase.
Instead of waiting for Emily a little bit longer, Piper began to walk toward the Deadheads. The Deadheads was a small forest area with a graveyard. It was the last place that every other Glenner wanted to be at. But the dead Glenners had to be buried somewhere and by someone, right?
Piper stopped walking when she saw something ahead of her. Curious, she got closer to it, only to find out it was just a bunch of branches tied together in the shape of a cross. She squatted down, trying to figure out what she was looking at.
SNAP!
Piper gasped and shot up from the ground, turning around to see who was behind her.
It was Lillie.
She sighed in relief. "You scared me, Lillie."
Of course, she didn't respond. Instead, she walked toward Piper and looked down at what she was looking at.
"Is that supposed to be some sort of grave?" Piper asked.
She nodded her head, then took out a knife from her pocket. Piper watched as she walked around the grave, so she followed her. She used her knife to point at a piece of bark that was on there. A name was carved in it:
KAREN
"What happened to her?" Piper questioned.
Lillie pointed at the vine that hung from a tree.
"She hung herself?" she asked. Lillie nodded her head. "Did she do it out here?" She shook her head. "Did she do it while she was in the Maze?"
Lillie nodded her head. She huffed a sigh and gave me a sad look.
"It must be hard to bury your friends," Piper told her. "I don't know how you do it."
Lillie shrugged her shoulders, putting the knife back in her pocket.
Piper bit her lip, then continued talking. "So, do you like being a Bagger?" She nodded her head. "Have you really not said a single word ever since you arrived here?" She nodded her head again. "I saw you help that other Glenner a few minutes ago. That was very nice of you."
Lillie gave her a weak smile, tucking strands of her dark hair behind her ear. She was a sweet girl, but Piper just wished that she would talk instead of just nodding or shaking her head.
"You think you can show me what a Bagger does?" Piper asked, chuckling at her.
Grinning, she nodded her head and started to walk beside her.
"I'm going to make you talk sooner or later," Piper said in a teasing tone, smiling at her.
She smiled again, except it was a little bit wider than the last one was. It was a sign that Piper was already making progress.

A/N: New chapter! I know it's kind of short, so my bad, lol.
I know I haven't been using a lot of Group B's slang, but that's only because I'm still looking for some slang to use, LOL, so I'll be using more of it soon, I promise!
(On that note, if you know any slang I can use for Group B, let me know!)
Thanks to reloading- for creating Lillie! Song above is A Beautiful Lie by 30 Seconds To Mars.
