5 || Picking Fights
A couple of days later, Harriet, Sonya, and the other Keepers had a Meeting to talk about what job Piper would be doing for the rest of her time in the Glen. It was ironic that a Bagger was the job that she liked the most. The more Piper was working with Emily and Lillie, the more comfortable she felt being in the Deadheads.
"Congratulations, Piper," Emily said to her after the Meeting, a smile on her face. "You're officially a Bagger."
Piper smiled back, then locked her eyes on Lillie, who was just as happy as she was.
*******
Piper knew that Beth didn't care for me as much ever since she accidentally slapped her, and she did a good job of letting her know that.
One morning, as Piper made her way toward the Homebase, Beth stuck her foot out in front of Piper, causing her to trip.
"You should watch where you're going, Newbie," she said, smirking at her, then continued walking.
I thought we were supposed to be nice to each other. Piper rolled my eyes as she stood up and kept walking.
Later that morning, after breakfast, Beth made a comment to Piper as she came back from the Deadheads.
"Worst Bagger ever. You should've been a Slugger."
Piper sighed, looking down at the ground. She remembered the bonfire the Glen threw for me when she arrived. It was that night Piper was pushed into the Fight Circle and went up against Beth.
"Oh, come on! You sticks are so weak!" Beth shouted after a girl groaned as she walked away from her. "Where's the Newbie at?"
With no warning, Piper was pushed into the Fight Circle. As she glanced at the other girls surrounding her, she knew there wasn't a way out of this.
"The rules are simple, Newbie," Beth stated. "I try to push you out of the Fight Circle and you try to stay in for more than five seconds."
The girls laughed, causing Beth to smirk at Piper. She looked at Beth, waiting for her to make the first move.
"Come on, Newbie," she said. "Let's see what you can do."
Piper stood in place, letting her heart beat faster and faster by the second. She didn't want to fight Beth. She had no reason to fight her. Why did she have to be the one to do this?
Before Piper knew it, she ran toward Beth, placing her hands out in front of her, attempting to push her to the ground. But Beth took her hands and placed them over Piper's, trying to shove her as well. Piper's feet were getting deeper into the sand as she was sliding backwards. She finally let go of her and fell on the ground, landing on her stomach. Piper heard the other girls cheer on Beth.
"Is that all you got, Newbie?" Beth asked. "You really are a stick."
Everyone laughed again. Piper huffed a sigh and stood up, brushing the sand off her shirt and pants. Without a warning, she charged at Beth for a second time. However, she jumped out of the way and pushed Piper, making her land on the ground once more.
She walked toward Piper and looked down, letting out a chuckle. "It's sad that you can slap me, Newbie, but you can't stand up long enough to fight me?" Beth spat out, adding a scoff and a smirk. "Pathetic."
Now Piper was mad. Instead of getting up, she stayed on the ground. As Beth began to walk away, Piper grabbed her foot and yanked it from under her, resulting in Beth landing on her stomach like she did.
It wasn't long before everyone began to cheer for Piper. She stood up and looked around at everyone chanting her name, and she couldn't help but smile.
"Not bad for a stick, huh, Beth?" a girl with black hair said, smirking at Beth.
Piper let out a laugh as she received more cheering and applauding from the other Glenners.
Ever since that night, Piper just knew that Beth's hatred for me grew. In fact, Piper didn't think she liked anyone. The first person Piper decided to talk to was Sonya.
"Why are you asking about Beth?" she questioned.
"She's been acting strange around me lately," Piper explained. "Ever since I got here, she's been nothing but rude to me."
Sonya shook her head, chuckling a little bit. "She's like that with everyone, Piper."
"But why? How can any of you stand her being rude like that?"
"It's just part of her personality, I guess," Sonya answered. "Just don't let her get to you and she'll eventually leave you alone."
The next person Piper talked to was Gwyneth, who didn't seem to have a problem with Beth.
"Beth and I are friends," she told her. "There ain't no problems between us, so we're cool. I know she has a problem with Esther, though. Everyone knows that, actually."
The last person Piper talked to was Esther herself, since her name kept popping up whenever she mentioned Beth.
"Beth likes to think she's the boss of everyone, especially the Builders," she said, grabbing a hammer from the toolbox that was beside her. "I became the Keeper of the Builders after it was clear that she wasn't right for the job. She's hated me ever since. Go ask everyone else. They'll tell you the same thing."
Piper paused for a moment before she spoke up again. "I'm surprised she hasn't beaten anyone up yet."
Esther snorted. "I don't think anyone wants to deal with another Banishment, especially Harriet."
Piper raised her eyebrows. "What's a Banishment?"
"It's an official punishment that is decided by the Keepers. It's a public thing. Everyone watches it so that they know what happens when they don't follow the rules. Once we decide on the Banishment, then that's it. We don't change our minds."
"Where do they get banished to?" she questioned, even though the answer was pretty obvious.
"The Maze, of course," Esther replied. "And no one's ever survived a night in the Maze."
"When was the last Banishment?"
"We had a Banishment two days before you showed up," she answered. "Her name was Emma. She tried to kill another Glenner by attempting to suffocate her while she was asleep."
Piper widened her eyes. "Who was the other Glenner?"
Esther nodded her head toward Beth, who was heading inside the Homebase.
"Piper! We need your help over here!" Emily called out to her from the Box.
"I should probably get back to work," Piper told Esther, beginning to walk away from her.
Esther grabbed her arm, turning her around. "Don't mess with Beth. The last thing you want to do is start a fight and Harriet won't like that. Just stay away from Beth and you'll be fine."
Piper nodded her head and went toward the Gardens. She didn't take her eyes off of Beth until she was surrounded by other Glenners.
*******
It was just before lunch when Cora approached Piper. "You on your way to the Homebase for lunch?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm starving," Piper answered, feeling her stomach rumble.
"Same here," she said. "I'm so hungry that I could eat a Griever right now."
Piper had no idea what a Griever was, but it had to be something big if Cora was willing to eat one. As they were walking, Piper spotted Beth by the entrance of the Homebase, which had her worried and annoyed at the same time. She took a deep breath and prepared herself for whatever was about to happen.
"Whatcha doing, Newbie?" Beth yelled her way.
"We just came to get some lunch, Beth," Cora intervened.
"Stuff it, Cora. I'm talking to the Newbie here," Beth snapped at Cora, then turned back and looked at Piper.
"We're just getting lunch, like Cora said," Piper repeated. "If you'll excuse us--"
"Why are you in such a hurry?" she interrupted, blocking Piper's way, folding her arms over her chest. "Do you not like talking to me?"
"I'm just hungry, that's all," she replied, beginning to get irritated. "Please get out of the way, Beth."
"What if I don't want to?"
"Beth, just leave her alone," Cora spoke up once again. "Seriously, stop being such a crackface. We only came to get lunch, just like we said."
Beth snorted and shook her head. "Stupid sticks," she muttered.
Finally, Piper had enough, giving Beth a hefty shove, causing her to nearly fall on the ground. She looked like she had been slapped across the face again. "You know, I really don't like the way you've been treating me since I got here," Piper snapped, shooting her a glare. "So just go ahead and tell me why you hate me."
Beth scowled at me. "You really don't want to mess with me, stick."
"Is that a threat?" she retorted.
"What's going on over here?" the sound of Harriet's voice came from behind.
"It's nothing, Harriet," Cora responded.
"Girls?" Harriet looked at Piper and Beth.
Piper didn't take her eyes off of Beth when she said, "Cora's right. It's nothing."
Harriet nodded her head. "Okay, then. Beth, Esther is looking for you."
Beth didn't respond. Instead, she walked past Piper, purposefully bumping into her shoulder.
Piper and Cora turned around and watched her storm off, folding their arms over their chests.
"Wow," she said. "You've got some guts, Newbie."
Piper cracked a smile, looking at Cora. "Come on, let's go get some lunch now."
