Secret Santa Story 2019: Prompt in under 500 words

A Pirate's treasure. A Pirate's treasure guarded by demons. A Pirate's treasure haunted by demons. A Pirate's treasure hoarded by demons.

Ye have heard the tales.. and I have seen that island... that treasure.. and I am alive to tell the tale.

And tell it.. I will. So, lean back to listen (or if your hearing be weak lean forward).

I came to these waters of the 'new world' under a goodly Captain. He fully owned the ship.. or so I suspected.

He sometimes did confide that there was more to owning a ship than owning keel and planks and masts and cloth and ropes and provisions. A ship was a promise of safety for the hired crew.

A sea-worthy man might earn (over years) some months of income (generally being feed shipboard during the mission).

A poor trade considering the risks.

That captain heard the rumor of treasure hidden in the kind of island that is common, but not common to find and approach.

His ship was narrow of hull and sleek of carriage. Two main masts and a single mizzen mast. Oh, and of course a jib.

We were a small crew well conditioned to the Captain and rigging.

The captain was never lax to hear any of the crew. He even seemed well to converse with those aboard that were not of the faith.

We circled small islands meticulously searching for the reported treasure.

It could not have been easier to spot those chests on the beach. It could be easy to only see those treasure chests, and not see the skeletons. Skeletons fallen over a chest here. Skeletons dropped within footfall of a chest there.

We were a loyal crew. When the captain lashed one of our hands each to the mast we knew to trust him.

He made a picture of the shore. Pointing to each of the treasure chests and telling us keep an eye just a specific one.

His plan became clear. The skeletons would move. Not much. Not often.

Judging from the types of tattered clothes, many had fallen to this trap.

The captain turned the ship and when we were out of sight of the island; he explained.

A demon's trap. Temptation. Greed. Avarice.

We hard rough sailing from then on, but arrived in a fair port. The captain discharged all the crew with pay. "Settle among yourselves and your god. You have seen more than most men ever see. I will be sailing back home in a few weeks. Come see me here if you want to return to the port of our first launch."

I stayed here. I do not think I will risk sea travel again. I am not so suited to other work, but I know when I was found lucky. I escaped demonic machinations.

My true heart says to serve only good works. I think demons more tricky than the average sea hand. Lucky angels exposed that trap.
