(Emilia's POV)

"Liam, what is taking you so long?" Tapping on my foot impatiently as I waited for my brother to meet back in this very spot.

God, I hope he's not in some sort of trouble..

Just then I begin to hear faint music near the road next to me and could see a big van in the distance coming towards me. I gasped, taking cover behind a corner and peeked to see Liam(and another human girl..?) come out of the van that had two huge rat mutes. I couldn't hear their conversation but when the van finally left I came out and walked to them. "Liam!" I called out holding my crossbow firmly, making sure there aren't any more of those freaks around. I looked at Liam with a serious expression on my face. "Liam, you made mute f r i e n d s..? A-and who is this kid here with you?" Liam looked at the girl and put a hand on her shoulder. "This is (y/n), I found her wandering on her own out here. She lost her parents when she was very young. About the samples, I WAS trying to get it. But then they were just so nice, met (y/n) there and she was super nice too, they gave me cheese, we played games and went on fun rides and-"

"And you made FRIENDS with them?!"

I was about to lose it

How could Liam even think these disgusting mutes are considered "nice"!

And after all they did to this world!!!

The raise of my angered voice caused the little girl to cower behind Liam, as if she was scared of me.

"Yes, but they're not the monsters we thought they were." Liam made sure the girl was behind him. "They even have an amusement park! Oh, a-and after meeting me and (y/n), they're gonna make it a safe zone for mutes AND humans. How cool is that?" I crossed my arms, giving him a deadpanned look. "Liam, you can't be serious. We are going to be the ones who-" "Bring humans back to the surface! And we can do that! Just....without getting rid of all the mutes." He smiled as he glanced to the girl who smiled faintly back at him. I was taken back by what he just said. "What? No!" I felt my fist tighten into a ball, outraged of the nonsense he was making. The little girl then poked her head out from behind Liam. "Yea...not all mutes are as bad as you think they are!" Oh, I did NOT want to hear this kind of talk from a mere petty child who hasn't seen what the world had become these past 200 years. "Shut it you little twerp. You know NOTHING!" I yelled at her to which she went back to hiding behind my brother. "Hey, don't yell at her like that! She was just trying to help!" He yelled back, clearly starting to get agitated by this conversation.

H E L P?!?

How can that brat even help in this situation !

"They took our WOLRD from us, Liam." I gestured with my hand showing everything surrounding us. "Everything they have, they took from us." I stood in front of him again. "If we let them exist, they'll do it again!" Liam threw his hands up. "What if it's not as black and white as that? What if EVERYTHING we've been taught......is wrong?" I felt nothing but confusion coming from his mouth as I watched him uncover the girl behind him and kneel down next to her. I assume he was trying to comfort her after what I spat at her. Hmm. Without looking at me Liam spoke out again. "I'm gonna show people what mutes are really like. This will change everything!"

This is it..

I can't change his mind, can I?

If he tells everyone back at the burrow about this...father..

Me and father's work would have been for nothing!

I aimed my crossbow straight at his heart earning a gasp from him. The little girl also shocked was standing in front of him trying to shield him from my arrow. "Move, girl." I said coldly pointing my crossbow at her now. "Or I'll shoot you first." Liam gasped and shook his head at her. "(Y/n), please stay back! I don't want you to get hurt!" Hearing the girl sniffling I pointed my crossbow back at Liam. "L-Liam..! N-n-nooo..!" Hugging her teddy bear she squatted down on the ground, tears pouring on her teddy bear. "Don't cry, ok? Everything's going to be fine." Liam and I stared directly at each other for who knows how long. Until Liam once again tried to convince me. "You don't have to do this, sis. Please! If I can get more people to believe that mutes and humans can live in harmony then we wouldn't have to live in fear anymore!" "I'm sorry, Liam." With one long sigh I raised my crossbow at his chest. "I can't let you do that." He made a horrified face as I pulled the trigger. And with the sound of a thud on the ground. It was done.

(Y/n POV)

"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH" I screamed my lungs out as I watch Emilia put a arrow through Liam's chest and watched his lifeless body drop dead. I quickly crawled to him, cupping his face trying to wake him up. "LIAM!!!! WAKE UP LIAM!! PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!" I shook his shoulders, eyes blurred from all the crying I'm doing. "Please don't leave me, Liam...!!" I continued to cry as I cradled him, holding him close to me. I couldn't believe what just happened HAS happened. I gently placed Liam's lifeless body down carefully and grabbed my teddy bear turning to the woman who did this. I stared at her, eyes still brimming in tears in with full hatred in my voice. "You. M o n s t e r!" Emilia came back to her senses as she looked down on me. Her eyes seemed to have a hint of hate and remorse but I wasn't able to tell. "You, girl! You said your name was (y/n), correct?" I looked back down at Liam, clutching on my bear and nodded slowly. "Speak when you are spoken to little b r a t!" I flinched at her sudden insult at me as I raised my head at her. "Now...how do you answer." Sighing in defeat I replied "yes, ma'm." As I put my head down in shame. "Good. Now, tell me this. Is it true you're an orphan living on own out here?" I stood up with my teddy bear in hands, eyes closed with my head still tilted down. "Yes, ma'm.." I whispered loud enough for her to hear. Emilia then started to pace back and forth, thinking to herself. After some time she finally stopped and turned to face me. She slowly came up to me and stopped right in front of me. "Listen here, (y/n). I'm not wanting there to be more bloodshed than there needs to be so I'll make you a deal. Right here, right now." I look up to face her and simply replied "go on." She made a smug grin on her face and said this to me. "I'll let you come live with me in my burrow, you'll be provided with everything you'll need from there on, if you wish to live with other foster parents then only I will choose for you. In return you must not ever speak a word about what happened here to ANYONE or I'll personally kill you with my own hands. Do I make myself clear?" I looked at her in total shock and disbelief.

She wants me to keep this a SECRET?!

How can I possibly do that!

But...if I don't agree she'll kill me either way...

I promised both Liam and my parents I'd live for them. I'll find a way to survive...

"So, how am I good to you alive? Why not just kill me and you don't have to worry about all this getting out?" Emilia chuckled at my questions. "Like I said kid, I'd rather avoid having more blood on my hands than need be. I'm also doing you a favor and offering you shelter, food, a place where you'll feel safe than out here. And because Liam liked you for who knows what, it's the least I can do for him in his absence. Or.....you'd rather die right now and never get live out your life here on the surface or in the burrows." As much as I hate to admit it but she did have a point. I did survive for this long on my own but how long can I keep this up? What if something inexplicable happens the very next day? I can't always know these things. "Also..." I stared at her again waiting to hear what she'll say next. "It will make me look even better knowing I found a poor innocent young orphan girl who was imprisoned by the same mute monster that killed poor Liam...don't you think?" She cackled menacingly as I took a step back by her dark aura she emitted.

This woman is INSANE!!!

I shook my head and let out a sigh as I raised my hand towards her. "I'll do it, but I don't want to be cooped up in a room all day. I want to be able to venture out and explore the burrow and be able to meet people. Give me that kind of freedom at least and I'll be sure to keep our secret safe." Emilia formed a triumphant grin and shook my hand. "You got yourself a deal, (y/n)." With that she led us back to walking towards her burrow, silence from both of us until she peeked back at me and stared at my teddy bear and then turned her head back around. "Cute bear, kid. What's their name?" Watching her backside I knew exactly what to call him and couldn't wait to see her reaction.

"Liam's his name." I snarked back. I could see the look on her face right now.

Pure annoyance

Oh, I'm so gonna rub this in her face later

Hugging my bear, I softly whispered to myself "I will avenge you, Liam. I'll make her pay for what she did to you....someday."

(At the burrow)

We made it to the entrance of the burrow. Emilia led us to a hatch on the ground that was covered with leaves and such to make sure it wasn't seen by anyone. She put in a passcode and immediately the hatch unlocked itself and turned the handle, opening it all the way and started climbing down. "Down this way, girl. And don't forget to close the door. It'll lock itself on its own." I looked beneath me as she descended down the long ladder. "But how will the hatch get covered?" She looked up at me and yelled out "there are leaves everywhere, and it gets windy up there so every time we leave it's always covered. Now hurry up!" I gulped nervously. It's gonna be so dark down there but now is not the time. I climbed down and made sure to close the hatch, hearing a click I made my way down. Finally landing on the ground I followed Emilia in a tunnel with very few light sources. Once we got to a door with a big handle on it she stopped. "Time to put on your acting skills, (y/n). Unless you'd want to end this trip short.." she turned her head slightly to look behind at me. Noticing how serious the tone was in her voice I complied. "Yes, ma'm.....I'll-...I'll do my best." She gave a firm nod and opened the door. "Follow my lead and this will all end smoothly." After she said that she quickly grabbed my hand and started running towards the center of what looked to be the burrow. I could see rows and rows of rooms but we ran past it, running into what looks to be a lab I believe. I saw a bunch of people standing around doing things, wearing odd clothes, gathered around each other. Once everyone started hearing our commotion we fully had their attention now. Emilia began to fake cry as she stopped right in front of them.

Oh, she's good..

"Liam is...." she staggered a bit trying to fumble with her words. She held onto another woman there, tears in her eyes. "The mutes- they killed him!" The woman gasped, covering her mouth. A man behind her was also shocked by what she had said. Emilia then pulled me towards her gently but carefully. "I found this poor girl captured by one of them and had to get her out of there. She too, even lost her parents to those horrible monstrosities!" Everyone suddenly looked at me with sorrowful eyes as I quickly try to think of something really sad and managed to shed a tear or two and just simply closed my eyes and nodded my head but also giving a few sniffles here and there. Emilia then gestured at me to everyone in the room. "You see? They left her speechless, TRAUMATIZED! How could anything so vile hurt an innocent child?!" Murmurs could be heard from the people. Emilia then stood tall and pronounced in a clear voice. "As for Liam...he did not die in vain." As she said this she took a long thin looking tube that seems to be filled with something as she presented it in front of her. "It is up to us. We must honor my brother's sacrifice." I frowned.

Yea...he sacrificed for me

"And create the cure that will free us from this underground p r i s o n!" I looked at her confusingly and then at the tube.

She's...gonna make a cure??

Is it even possible..?

With that it seemed everyone didn't think twice about her seemingly believable story and went on with their work. Some of them even came up to me and tried to welcome me and gave me apologies for my loss. Emilia then excused herself and me and left the lab. She let go of my hand afterwards and we entered what looks like a locked storage. She then shoved me in there making me trip over a few things. I turned to her, panic filling my voice. "W-what are you doing, Emilia!? I thought you were taking me to find someone to care for me!?" Emilia leaned on the side of the door and smirked. "And I will....in due time. Sorry to say this kid, but I can't fully trust you yet being here. This is only a precaution until I find you the right people." I slumped my shoulders. She still doesn't trust me yet, but we did just met so I can understand where she's coming from.

But to lock me in a CLOSET??!?!

"On the other hand, great performance you did back there. Keep being on my good side and I'll see to it you get everything you need here, and then some. Sound good?" Before I could answer her she closed the door and left me here in complete darkness. Leaving me to my thoughts. I cuddled my bear, Liam.

What am I getting myself into..

I wish Liam were here right now...
