(Y/n's POV)

Emilia gasped as she caught me and Hugo play the piano(I really hope she didn't see us about to kiss). She immediately walked right up to me, panic in my voice I calmly called out to her "E-Emilia....it's not what you think I was just-"

Slap

Emilia had slapped me across the face making me fall back on the piano. She grabbed my arm and yanked me up while I covered the cheek that was now red. Hugo suddenly raised himself and his voice as he yelled out to Emilia "Leave her alone!" Emilia shoved him back pointing directly at him making him cower before her as she said in a serious tone "This doesn't concern you, mute! I'll be back to deal with you later!" She dragged me out of towards the door but not before I yelled out Hugo's name and told him not to worry. After the door shuts Hugo dropped to his knees, hands covering his face as he began crying silently thinking she'd do something bad to you because of what he did.

(With Emilia..)

Once the hallway was cleared of people she shoved me against the wall and put a hard grip on my neck. I could feel her nails digging into my skin."What's the meaning of this (y/n)!? When did he become a mute and what were you consulting with him?!" I held onto her grip as she slowly began to loosen it so that I could speak. "I had only found out just today..! I was only with him because it felt like he needed someone." I rasped out loud adding another comment. "And I should know what that feels like, wouldn't you agree, Emilia?" I gave her a smug grin as she scoffed at me, releasing her grip. "You better not have forgotten about our little arrangement, (y/n)." I laughed at her "Why'd you think I vented out all my frustrations on a monkey? Unlike the people here he didn't really have the capacity to spill the tea with any of his so called scientist friends." I paused for a moment before looking away. "At least until today.." Emilia then gave a sour look as she turned her head whispering coldly "Oaks.."

Emilia had Zane and Greta come along to watch me outside of Hugo's room as she went and to get Lio and Song. I was so nervous. I didn't want anything bad to happen to any of them. Minutes later Emilia came with Lio and Song who brought out Hugo behind them. She came up to us and faced the three of them demanding their explanation. I made eye contact with Hugo as he did the same mouthing the words 'are you ok', to me as I nodded. He felt a little calmer after that but we were interrupted by Lio's speech to Emilia. "Ok, Ok. We...we were going to tell you about our progress. But...but...but we had to confirm the results." Emilia didn't seem to believe one word of it. "Yeah, I just watched a monkey play a piano solo with (y/n). I'm not stupid. They're pretty much confirmed. So, which formula held the mutagen." Song and Lio both looked at one another until Song faced back to her "We..don't know." Emilia looked upset "Excuse me?!" I mean they are telling the truth. "You had us give him three variations just today." Song exclaimed at her. Having Hugo take three doses of formula like that would be confusing for anyone so it could be seen that way. "And who knows whether this was a delayed effect or a reaction between two different formulas-

Emilia interrupted Lio before he could finish. "Then I'll do it myself. We're so close to turning these mutes back into the animals they are." Hugo looked away discomforting. I felt so bad for him that I wanted to rush over to him cuddle him, telling him that everything will be alright. "Zane, take a sample." Hugo widened his eyes after hearing Emilia say that.

Oh no

I watched Zane take one of the needles from the top of a cabinet and slowly started walking towards Hugo. Seeing his big smirk I quickly stood in front of him blocking with my arms. "Can't we reconsider this you guys?!" Emilia snarled at me "Move out of the way (y/n), unless you want there to be any...repercussions." I gulped as Zane pushed past me. "Come here, monkey." He said creepily and Hugo moved away from him. How dare they frighten him! Lio looked at Zane "Stop, you're scaring him." He attempted to block Zane as well but he got pushed to the ground. Song had knelt down to him making sure he was ok and I went over to him as well. We all couldn't do anything but watch as Zane moved in closer to Hugo, having the needle in the air. "Oh.." Hugo whimpered as he what looks to be sweating profoundly. Zane grabbed his arm when Hugo was covering his face. And it looked like his sweat came off from his fingertips and splashed onto Zane's face.

But just as Zane was about to inject the needle he suddenly shouted "Stop it!" And just like that Zane seemed to have stopped his actions. Hugo then looked at him confused and decided to say another command. "Um, let me go? Please..?" Again Zane complied by letting him go. We were all shocked by what was happening in front of us. Emilia then stepped in, "Zane? What are you doing?" She and Greta turned to Song who began speaking facts about mandrills in general. "Mandrills have pheromones that can influence other primates, but the mutagen must have heightened the effects."

Wow that's some power

Emilia walked over to the two of them and observed Zane more. "Tell him something else." She commanded, pointing at him. He looked at her,"Do it!" She said again. Hugo looked unsure at first but retracted and said "Do...the waltz?" Zane then began doing a weird kind of dance which I guess was him trying to do his own version of the waltz. I could hear Song next to me "Incredible.." she whispered. Emilia looked back at Hugo eyeing him before having Greta help her escort the waltzing Zane into another room. "You three, stay here. Don't let him out of your sight!." After the door closed behind them we rushed to Hugo who was looking at what he had done with his sweat. "What you just did is remarkable!" Song exclaimed to him. "A little scary, but remarkable."

"Is it true..? You only gave me intelligence so you could take it away from everyone else?" He only stared at Lio and Song but not me. I had told him before that I didn't work in the same department as they did, only with plants and food producing. And if I did I'd feel just as guilty as they did. Lio tried explaining to him "That's how it started. But you showed us we couldn't be a part of that anymore." Me and Song nodded in agreement with him, our smiles coming back to us. "That's why we're going to escape the burrow." Him and Song had talked to me about it beforehand, asking me if I'd like to go with them. I happily agreed because not only do I get to be with Hugo, they feel like family and have always been there for me, but we also share our same belief about mutes and humans coexisting. So that's why I'm so excited about all of us leaving. Excited to finally get away from her..

"Let's leave right now." Hugo said impatiently and I for one agree. The faster we get outta here the better. Lio looked to Song sadly as she did the same "We...we can't." What? "Yes, we can! I can make them do whatever I want with my pheromones." I quickly stepped in "I agree! The more time we stay spent in here the more they'll grow suspicious! We have to take measures." Hugo rambled on again "I can make them pay for being so mean to us..."

Wow, never thought he'd say something like that..

And yet I find it oddly attractive

What is wrong with me..

"I know you're angry, and I am too, but forcing people to do things against their will, that's wrong, you two." Hugo looked away, saddened because he knew he was right. I knew it too, but...is it wrong still if you're doing it for a good cause? Song placed her hand on his shoulder "As soon as the baby's born, we're breaking you out of here." "We'll all escape together, I promise." Lio and Song smiled as they hugged us both.

(The next day)

I decided to go see Hugo a little early before I start heading to work. Once I opened the door I gasped dramatically as I saw Hugo being contained in a big clear looking glass cube walking on a treadmill sweating up a storm. Before I even noticed Emilia was there I ran to Hugo who saw me and sadly smiled, placing a sweaty hand on the wall in front of me as I did the same. "You have no business being here, (y/n). Leave. NOW." I turned to her with a look that could kill "Why are you doing this to him?!" Just then we both heard a gasp as Lio walked in dropping Hugo's blanket. "Emilia smirked "I expected the mutation to affect his size, his intelligence, sure. But, to manifest a power like this..?" The treadmill Hugo was walking on connected to a little machine on the wall that seemed to store his pheromones in. Hugo was panting, obviously tired from all the walking he did, he knelt in front of me and I could see his whole body shake. "It's an incredible discovery." She finished, staring at Lio who then ran to Hugo and I. He looked at Emilia "You can't lock him in a cage! He's a person!" "Yeah, Emilia! This is too much for him!"

Emilia turned around to face us before heading out the door, waving her pencil in her hand "He's an animal, you two." She then threw the blanket at me as I caught it and handed it to Lio. "The future of the human race is on the line. So Lio, think like a scientist and stop getting so attached and that includes you too,
(y/n)." I lowered my head. As she took out a spray that held Hugo's pheromones she spoke coldly "I trust you won't need anymore convincing." As she put the spray back in her pocket she came up to me and pulled me by the arm. "YOU have work to do now, (y/n), you aren't needed here anymore." With a loss for words I watched Lio and Hugo frown at my departure. Hugo reached out to me as I tried to reach him back, but it was too late. Emilia made it clear that I was to never see him after that or else there'd be consequences. And I didn't want more trouble than there need be if we were getting out of here. Lio makes sure to tell me about Hugo's well-being and he does the same for him, from what Lio says he misses me terribly, as do I though. Everyday...

It had been several more days and I was getting impatient already. I was pacing around my room wondering if I should act now or wait for Lio and Song, but the suspense is killing me. I just need to hear one word that their baby is born and I'm off to get Hugo. It could be any minute or day now. I'm already packed with essentials and such. I just need to go get some seeds from my farm patch. Hopefully then I won't have to worry about food for a while. After thinking this through in my mind I heard what seemed like a scream coming from next door.

Is that....Song?

The only way she'll scream like that is if..

Gasp!

I grabbed my things quickly and went out the door. I made sure to be as stealthy and as ordinary as possible to not look suspicious.

Goodbye apartment..

With no casualties I made it to my little farm patch and started digging up a hole in the spot where I hidden all my plantable seeds in. I stopped when I found a big plastic bag that had tiny paper bags with labels in them and placed them in my backpack. On a desk in a drawer I found my notebook that had hundreds of notes about everything I studied and shoved it in my backpack as well. Once I had everything I needed I then started sprinting to Hugo's room. As soon as I opened the door I found a sleeping Hugo who had immediately woken up to the sound. "Hugo!" I yelled as I walked towards him. "(Y/n)! You came back!" I placed both my hands on the cube with him doing the same. "Of course I did...I would never leave you." We both smiled lovingly at each other until I had realized why I was here in the first place. "Song's already having her baby! I'm getting you out of here!" I looked at the cube and saw the door had a lock on it. I went to turn it and heard a click. And with a heavy pull I yanked the door open and let Hugo walk out, finally free from his imprisonment. What caught me by surprise was that he suddenly hugged me. "Thank you..so much...(y/n)" I smiled as I embraced him too. We stayed that way for a little bit until we heard a loud rumble erupt from under our feet. Startled we looked at each other "What was that?" Hugo questioned me. I looked at our surroundings and shook my head nervously "I-...I don't know." Then we heard it again only louder and suddenly the whole place began shaking violently, alarms going on and off. "What's happening?!" A loud animal growl could be heard faintly and then...

BAM!!!

An explosion happened right near us as we fell back from the sudden impact causing us both to scream and panic.

No..

Not again..!

This can't be happening to me...!

Mom....dad...!

I curled myself in a ball hyperventilating like crazy, I didn't want this to be how I die. I couldn't take the trauma. I couldn't take any of it!

I then felt arms around me and I opened my eyes to see Hugo's staring right at me. He kept me close as we laid on the ground huddled together. With his quiet shushes and kind words of encouragement I felt more safe and relaxed as we waited out the disaster. With another shake a large debris came crashing down at us making me and Hugo gasp as he turned to cover me, quickly shutting our eyes as we waited for what seemed to be our end...
