Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters
"This is Samantha, another member of the faculty here," Sam slowly walks towards Xavier, her eyes trained on the tall, buff man next to her boss, students continue to walk to their classes around the small group "She teaches Sociology and Psychology and is also our student's 'Welcome Wagon',"
"I guess I'm yours as well," she smiles at the new Mutant
"Guess so. Logan," he introduces himself "You got a 'hero' name I gotta worry about?"
"Just stick with Sam,"
"Sam," he nods
"Introductions over, I was about to show Logan our true base of operations, are you joining us?" Sam's eyes flick to Logan, she could feel his curiosity, his confusion, but beneath it all, an anger, something which would normally draw her away from someone.
"Sure,"
"As you can see, everything on this floor and above has been designed to be viewed by the general public. As far as they know, this is merely a school for gifted students. - The sub-levels however, are an entirely different matter," Samantha smirks at The Professor's words, stepping right and pushing the panelled wall, an elevator appearing.
"After you,".
Down below, the first place Xavier shows Logan is the large hanger, Logan listens carefully, sensing something above.
"The basketball court," Sam explains before the professor begins to talk again
"I was fifteen years old when I first began to hear people's thoughts. I felt I was going mad. Until I met a young man named Erik Lehnsherr. He too had an unusual power. - He could create magnetic fields. Erik showed me that there were others like us. But as our numbers increased, a fearful world began to take notice of us. And Erik changed. Believing that humanity would never accept us, he grew angry and vengeful - He became Magneto." Charles watches Logan examine the X-Suits in their glass cases, Sam brings them both out into the hallway and Logan lingers by the door to Sam's work space.
"That's my office,"
"You've got an office?"
"I've got two," she smirks and they continue the tour, taking another elevator which raises them to ground level, opening to reveal the stables.
"There are mutants out there with incredible power, Logan. And many who do not share my respect for mankind. If there is no one equipped to oppose them, humanity's days could end." Charles warns
"I know you think none of this is your concern, but Magneto will find you. And a lot of lives could be in danger including your own. I'll make you a deal. You give me forty-eight hours to figure out what Magneto wants with you, and I give you my word that, no matter what happens, I'll use all my power to help you piece together what you've lost, and what you're looking for,"
There is a moment of silence, clearly, Logan is still deciding, Sam decides to try and convince him further, "Would you like to see Rogue?".
Logan agreed, and let Sam lead him to Storm's classroom, she leaned on the doorway, letting him go in and talk privately to the girl.
"Hey, kid." Rogue turns to see him, exclaiming his name and running forward "They treatin' you okay?" he asks with a weary glance directed at Storm
"Yeah... In fact, I might stay,"
"That's great, kid," he smiles, Sam can feel that he genuinely cares, Rogue had said she'd barely properly met him, but he'd let her hitch a ride.
"What about you?"
"Coupla' days. A guy like me," he shrugs "There's not much here," his eyes drift to Sam, talking quietly to Jean, laughing at something before pushing her away,
Jean leaves and Sam's eyes return to Logan "Then again..."
"Hey, uh, Jean was wondering if she could run a few tests, just routine check-up stuff," Sam speaks up and Logan nods, wordlessly following her request and walking back towards her, Rogue calls after him
"I'll see you later, right?".
Inside the lab, Logan lies shirtless on a flatbed, positioned in front of the X-ray. Jean is removing the sticky electrodes from his chest and Sam watches from nearby, her eyes trailing up and down his bare abdomen. He had defined muscles, with hair trailing down his naval.
"I'm sorry," Logan speaks softly
"For what?"
"If I hurt you," he gestures to her neck, where he had head-locked her earlier in the day, Jean pauses, genuinely touched before going to adjust the X-Ray, Logan's attitude flips as he turns the other way to look at Sam.
"You come down here just to see me with my shirt off?" Sam snorts, because yes, maybe that did factor into her decision to help Jean, but god did he have some guts to say it.
"Don't flatter yourself," with that, she nods and Jean smirks, pressing a button that slams Logan into the X-Ray.
Sam walks over to the screen Jean is by and looks closely
"Is that metal?" she mutters.
"Call the others,"
"The metal is an alloy called Adamantium. Until today I thought it to be a myth. Supposedly indestructible. It's been surgically grafted to his entire skeleton,"
Jean stands in front of the team in the conference room, Logan's X-Ray behind her. His bones seem to have an architectural structure about them...they had a sharpness nature couldn't create.
"How could he have survived a procedure like that?" Storm questions
"His mutation. He has uncharted regenerative capability, which enables him to heal rapidly. This also makes his age impossible to determine. He could very well be older than you, Professor,"
Sam laughs, glancing at the man who smiles politely. After their parents had left or disowned them, Charles was all any of them had as a parent, and he leaned into that role as well as he could.
"Who did this to him?" Scott asks and Jean shrugs
"He doesn't know. Nor does he remember anything about his life before it happened,"
Charles sighs "Experimentation on mutants. It's not entirely unheard of, but I've never seen anything like this before,"
"Do you think he knew what was going to happen?" Sam says quietly "Did he ask for it?"
"I don't know," Xavier sighs
"What do you think Magneto wants with him?"
"I'm not entirely sure it's 'him' that Magneto wants,"
After their discussion, Sam offered to show Logan his room, she opened the door, switching the lights on before entering and pointing at the double bed in the centre.
"This is you,"
"Where's your room?" he asks without missing a beat, Sam bites her lip to stop herself from smiling
"Two rooms down, next to Storm," she doesn't quite want to leave yet, and it seems Logan doesn't want her to either.
"So, what's your 'gift'?"
"I'm an empath," Sam looks away "I can feel the people around me's emotions, manipulate them if I try hard enough," Logan hums as if it's impressive "It's not all it's cracked up to be, I can't really...shut it off,"
"What do you mean?" he steps forward, forcing her to look at him.
"I know what every person in this building is feeling," she explains "But I can't separate the emotions...from each other or my own,"
"What am I feeling right now?" his eyes dance over to her lips and she laughs
"It might take a while to find out, I'd rather not,"
"Why? Nervous of what you might find?"
"No," she shakes her head, but looks at him once again, trying to ground herself and feel him, his emotions.
Still alert to others' feelings, she can feel the students and her friends around her.
Georgia from Sam's Thursday study session was heartbroken, her boyfriend had ended things earlier that day.
Jubilee was excited over something.
Jean was worried.
Rogue was hopeful.
Scott was agitated.
All the feelings get lost inside Sam, she finds her own uncertainty getting lost in the mix, starting to swirl inside her stomach.
Then she gets to Logan.
"You're curious, about me, this place," slowly, she feels the other psyches around her start to dwindle "There's some joy," he raises an eyebrow "A little bit," she shrugs "You're happy Rogue has somewhere to stay, but also...it's nice to be accepted," her hands start to rise, going to touch his cheeks "May I?"
"Yeah..."
Her hands grasp at his jaw and she takes a sharp intake of breath, suddenly just feeling him, mixing with herself.
"You're angry, deep within you, it sits," she feels a rush of adrenaline through her blood, the same that comes with fury "You fight, make enemies, all because of that anger, it's deep routed but..."
"But?"
Sam's eyes start to water, feeling everything Logan felt in that moment, his hands gently resting on her forearms, not pulling her away, but strengthening her. She isn't sure where she starts and he ends now. Feeling everything so intensely, she takes another breath, trying to separate what she was feeling. Joy, Curiosity, anger.
"You're lonely..." Her stomach flutters, a defence mechanism from her brain, trying to stop the whirlwind of emotions swimming through her psyche. Sam feels like she might burst, and she tries to focus on Logan again, her heart rate calming. "Underneath all that anger, all that rage, you're lonely...but, it could be me who feels that,"
A moment passes, and Sam's eyes shut, Logan gently takes her hands off him
"Maybe we both feel it," he admits and her eyes flash open, suddenly very embarrassed by her mutation. She keeps her voice quiet, barely above a whisper.
"Goodnight Logan,"
With that, she drops her arms and starts to leave the room, she stops by the doorway when she hears Logan's voice again
"No one's going to try and bash my head in, telling me to stay away from their girl?"
Sam smiles, turning to look at the man once again " I'm no one's girl,".
