2: Angelique Fabian

She sat in a slightly plush office chair across the large desk from two individuals. An average-sized man sat in the desk chair and a sharp woman stood behind him.

Angelique took in the room, the arched ceiling and the large stained glass window behind the desk. She saw the walls of books, the lamps, and the graduating class photos on the desk. The man, his black hair swept to the side, almost as if he'd been caught in a wind tunnel on the way over. He wore a soft brown sweater and burgundy corduroy slacks. A woman stood behind him, her deep brown, almost black, hair pulled tight around her head. She wore a pin-straight skirt and button-up shirt, her body thin and pointy.

The french teen, sitting across the desk from them, was the opposite, her body lithe but with some padding. Her face was round, her blonde hair framing her face, as a headband kept the rest of it out of her face. Only the soft bangs, adding a roundness to her face, were released from the headband.

"Angelique Fabian," The woman said. Flipping through a file that Angelique had to assume was her application. Her accent was off on Angelique's name but of course, Angelique didn't expect an American to know how to pronounce a French name. "I am Lillian Hoops, this is Headmaster Titan Jones."

Angelique nodded, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She wasn't going to say anything until they asked. That was one of her favourite tactics to off-put someone just a bit.

The Headmaster clasped his hands on the desk and leaned forward slightly. "Tell me about yourself, Angelique Fabian."

Angelique nodded, leaning forward in her chair. She was used to keeping a Frenchman on his toes and an American man shouldn't be too difficult in comparison.

"I can tell you anything about myself but what does that really tell you?" Angelique asked. She raised an eyebrow and pursed her lips. "It tells you I want to go to school here. Not that I deserve to."

Titan shook his head, leaning back in his seat and unclasping his hands. "You're accepted to the school."

She sat back in surprise, Angelique sure her eyes were open wide.

"You were accepted the moment you applied," Ms Hoops said from her position behind the Headmaster.

"We are here to help children with powers and abilities, regardless of whether or not they want to be heroes or are fantastic academics. You deserve a safe place no matter what. The Academy can give that to you if you'll let us."

She didn't know how to respond to that. Angelique wasn't– She wasn't even entirely sure she had powers but the Headmaster was accepting her even without knowing. He cared for her, even without knowing what she could do.

"Oh." Was all she could say, her voice a little bit out of reach.

"So," Ms Hoops said. "Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself, your abilities and what you hope to accomplish with them."

Angelique didn't have a full answer to either of those questions and she didn't like answering questions when she didn't have all the answers. But Titan's eyes were boring into hers and Angelique couldn't bring herself to stay silent.

"You have read my application," Angelique said. "I'm 18, and I have a solid 15.7 in all of my classes. Uh, your American A, I think. I am currently specialising in fashion and fashion history."

Titan raised a hand to stop her. "Angelique. Please, tell me about your ability."

Angelique shook her head. "Look, I– I do not know what my ability is. I do not know what it is or what I can do."

"Explain it," Ms Hoops said. Her voice, stern but not unkind, made Angelique feel like the fact that she didn't know was okay.

"I–" She took a deep breath and then began. "I hear these voices. All the time. They ask me for things. They want me to help them and, well, I have always ignored them. I have always left them alone. Until, one day, I could not leave them alone and I let my mind say yes to one. I said yes to one–."

Titan raised a hand again, pausing her in the middle of her fast and rambly speech. "What happened? Tell me exactly."

Angelique slowed down, her voice steadying. "I heard a voice, a woman. She sounded like she was begging, begging for her son to get better. I could not ignore it, I thought towards it, a yes, or something like it. My Aunt is a nurse for very sick children, she told me when she got home how a boy, who was almost dead, became better around the same time I remember saying yes."

The Headmaster leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. His eyes swept over Angelique. Her skin tingled under his gaze.

"It feels telepathic," The Headmaster said. Uncrossing his arms and staring at her, his eyes feeling deeper and deeper the more Angelique stared. "Your synapses are firing in overdrive just to ignore these voices."

"How do you know?"

"Electricity." Titan sat forward, his closeness feeling literally electric. And now Angelique knew why.

She shook her head a little bit, trying to push the voices back again. "Is that your ability? Electricity?"

He nodded. "Yes," His voice rang clear through the fog of voices begging to be heard. "Let them in, just for a moment. It will help me to help you."

Angelique frowned. "I cannot."

"I need to see what your power feels like, what it does in your brain," Titan Jones said. His eyes locked on hers. "Let go."

So she did.

I want– No puedo ayudarla– Please give– S'il vous plaît, j'ai besoin qu'elle aille bien– I need– For him– Dale lo que yo no pude tener– He can't die– S'il vous plaît, s'il vous plaît, s'il vous plaît, s'il vous plaît, quelqu'un– Don't let him– Que dois-je faire– I can't lose her–

Angelique pulled it shut the second she could feel her mind reaching back to the voices.

"Is that enough?"

"Yes."
