Chapter nineteen

Weeks have passed, and the case involving Mrs Rosario and her husband has proven to be much more complicated than they anticipated. Tension in the courtroom reached a boiling point at one stage, with both spouses at each other's throats. It took considerable effort from the security personnel and the judge to restore order.

Initially, the husband had preferred a bench trial, hoping to keep the details of his marital problems private since he is a prominent figure in society. However, his wife adamantly refused, opting instead for a jury trial.

As the case approaches its conclusion, Sylvia sits at her desk, preparing their closing argument. She gazes at the notepad before her, drumming her pencil on the page with a frown, deep in thought.

A knock on her office door jolts her from her reverie.

“Oh, it’s you. What brings you here, Mr. MacLen? Don’t you have work to attend to?”

Oh, so we’re calling me by my last name now, aren't we? What happened to ‘Scott’? Don’t tell me that a few weeks with Miss Amoah have transformed you into a model employee,” he quipped, smirking.

Sylvia chuckled softly. “Not a chance. But seriously, what are you doing here?”

He took a step closer to her desk. “I came to see you, of course. How did the hearing go?”

“Not so great,” Sylvia replied, leaning back in her chair. “It felt like hell in there. The arguments and insults thrown by both spouses reached new heights. It was as if they had never been in love at any point. The courtroom was thrown into chaos, leaving the jury utterly stunned.”

Scott sighed, “I suppose going through a divorce has that effect.”

Sylvia nodded in agreement. “Definitely,” she said. “At one point, we had no choice but to present the recorded footage of Mr. Rosario's infidelity with his maid. I have to admit, the content was overwhelming for the jury. Watching it felt like they were getting a sneak peek at a risqué film featuring a high-profile individual. In the end, only the judge and the legal representatives were permitted to view it, and believe me, the actions on that tape were out of this world.” Lowering her voice to a whisper, she added, “I made a few mental notes.” When Scott raised an eyebrow, she quickly clarified, “For future reference, I mean.”

Scott burst into laughter. “You little sneak.”

Unable to suppress a laugh, Sylvia picked up the notepad from her desk. “Now that the case is nearing its end, Miss Amoah has tasked me with writing a closing argument for the jury.”

Scott stepped closer, standing behind her chair. One hand rested on the back of her chair, while the other leaned on the desk as he peered over her shoulder at the notepad.

“How’s it coming along?” he asked, making it difficult for her to focus with him so close. She could practically smell his cologne.

Scott seemed to notice the effect his scent had on her, as a smirk crept onto his face when he observed her flustered state, especially as she crossed one leg over the other.

Turning her chair to face him, she looked up at his face. “It’s progressing just fine, Mr. MacLen. Unfortunately, these aren’t numbers you can assist me with. I think you should head back to your own work, if you don’t mind.”

Scott withdrew slightly, raising his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. If you insist.”

Mrs. Amoah lifted her head from the file she was reviewing as Sylvia approached to present her closing argument.

She gestured for Sylvia to take a seat in front of her desk. After listening attentively to what Sylvia had prepared, she made a few adjustments and offered several suggestions.

Once they finished and Sylvia stood to leave, Mrs. Amoah stopped her with a question.

“Was that Mr. Scott MacLen I heard you talking to earlier in your office?” She raised an eyebrow at her.

“Yes, it was,” Sylvia replied.

“What did he want?”

Sylvia cleared her throat, gathering her thoughts. “He wanted to check in on the case's progress.”

“Oh! And why would he be concerned, considering he's not a lawyer but just a mere accountant at this firm?”

Sylvia bristled slightly at the tone she noted in Mrs. Amoah's voice regarding Scott, but chose not to react. Instead, she shrugged. “I don’t know. Perhaps he’s interested because he’s a partner at the firm. This is a high-profile case, and any misstep could affect the firm’s reputation. So, he has every right to know if everything is on track.”

Mrs. Amoah stared at Sylvia thoughtfully. “Let's just say if you’re correct, shouldn’t he approach me directly for information instead of you?”

Sylvia stood her ground. “Maybe he didn’t come to you because of how intimidating you can be sometimes. Perhaps he thought it might insult you to imply he doesn’t trust you to handle this case.”

Mrs. Amoah continued to look at her in silence, leaning forward with her hands clasped on the table. “Very well, you can go. But let me give you a piece of advice: be cautious about how close you let him get. Even if he’s just an accountant and you don’t see him as a threat, he could still distract you from your goals. And I assume you have ambitions while working here, correct?”

Sylvia remained silent.

“Miss Benson, when men are presented with something beautiful, they often want to take a closer look. And you, Miss Benson, are certainly a beautiful distraction.”

“That’s all I’ll say. You may leave.”
