The Jabberwock

Carter trudged through mud and tree roots. The call of some exotic sounding bird echoed in the distance, and dozens of mome raths constantly seemed to be crossing his path. He kicked at one. This was all his fault. He shouldn't have sent that letter in the first place. Look at what it had earned him. Carter was so wrapped up in his own thoughts, he didn't notice the stomping sound around him, until it was far too late...

Another roar cut through the air, causing Carter to jump backwards. Glaring down at him with red glowing eyes was a giant creature, glistening yellow jaws bared at him as it roared again. Flicks of spit gathered on Carters face as he stumbled backwards, brandishing his small knife at what could only be the Jabberwock. The beast swept a lizard like hand at him, talons slicing rough his shirt and just missing his skin. Carter struck out with the knife, but the blade bounced harmlessly off its scaly hide. The Jabberwocks other hand came flying out of nowhere, stalling into Carters side and sending him flying into a tree. Carter felt his ribs crack slightly as he slid to the ground. The Jabberwock crawled over, it's eyes fixed intently on its prey. It reared its triangle shaped head, ready to strike. Carter closed his eyes as the creatures open mouth hurtled down at him... But it didn't strike.

Carter opened his eyes as the Jabberwock reeled back in pain, an arrow protruding from its eye. It threw its head either side, attempting to shake the projectile out.
"You didn't think I'd leave you that easily did you?" Georgia panted, lowering her bow and stumbling over to him. Carter pulled himself to his feet.
"What are you doing here?" He hissed. "You could die!"
"So could you." Georgia argued. "And a simple thank you would have sufficed."
"Thank you."
Georgia smiled at him, wincing as she took a step forward.
"Someone call for cavalry?" Otto yelled, bursting into the clearing with Fiona.

The twins began firing arrow upon arrow at the Jabberwock. Carter staggered around its side, barely avoiding its thrashing wings and tail as he stabbed its side. Nothing seemed to be working.
"This is pointless!" Fiona screamed over the Jabberwocks roars. "We have to get out!
Carter and Georgia began making their way across the clearing as fast as they could. Cater turned around to help Georgia, only to see a clawed hand slam into her side. The cloaked girl went flying across the clearing, slamming into a tree and dropping limp to the ground.

Carter and Fiona looked around. Without thinking, Carter jumped from the tree line, pain shooting across his chest. The girl attempted to push herself off the ground, pain wracking her face. The Jabberwock raised its head, ready devour her. Carter made one final desperate attempt. He threw himself forward, holding the dagger above his head. The handle felt hot in his hand, growing heavier every moment. There was a sickening sound as Carter felt the Jabberwock impaled itself on the dagger. Except it wasn't a dagger.

Carter opened his eyes to see the inside of the creatures mouth around him.
"England?" Georgia gasped. Carter threw his arms sideways, watching the limp head of the Jabberwock slide off of a long golden broadsword. The end of the longsword sunk into the ground as Carters arms gave way to its weight.
"How-What-" he grunted, clutching his ribs. The evening light flickered across an engraving in the base of the swords blade. Vorpral.

"That's-That's not possible." Georgia winced. "The sword..."
"It just appeared." Carter groaned, letting himself drop to his knees. Fiona raced to her sisters side, and Otto rubbed himself on Carters limp hand that rested on the ground.
"It didn't appear." Said a voice. "It chose you."
The group turned around to see White standing across the clearing. He bounced over.
"Oh frabjous day!" He yelled. "We must return at once! Return the true ruler to Wonderland."

Carter wasn't listening. He felt his grip slip away from the hilt of the sword as Fiona yanked it from the earth. In one difficult looking motion, she sliced the head off the Jabberwock. As soon as the cut had been made, the blade disintegrated, reappearing in a scabbard on Carters back. He yelled in pain at the weight pressing into his chest.
White tapped his foot twice, and the earth fell from beneath them. Carter watched as peculiar objects flew past him once more, before finding himself crouching on the purple grass once more.

The head of the Jabberwock rolled out beside him, landing to face the Queen of Hearts.
"No!" The woman screamed, leaping from her seat. Her face went red. "Impossible! Impossible! Guards, OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!"
Several card guards raced towards the teenagers, weapons drawn. With his last remaining strength, Carter stood up, pulling the Vorpral Sword from its sheath.

The crowd gasped. All of the soldiers stopped in their tracks.
"No!" The Queen screamed again. "Impossible! That sword was destroyed!"
"Nothing is ever destroyed!" White called, sprinting forward. "Bow before your new king!"
The crowd, and even the cards, all bowed to Carter. He dropped the end of the sword to the ground, staring around.
"What's-"
"Down with the Queen!" Someone shouted. Dozens of people burst from the forest, weapons and farming tools clasps in their hands. At the very front, was the Mad Hatter.

"Ah." He said, lowering a woodcutters axe. "Are we late to the party?"
"Indeed." White hissed. The Queen moved towards Carter, but the cards stopped her.
"What are you doing?" She yelled. "I am your Queen!"
The cards shook their helmets. "No anymore. Long live the king!"
Everyone turned to Carter, who promptly passed out.
