The Looking Glass

Carter awoke in a soft bed, light shining through his closed eyelids. The roar of the Jabberwock still rung in his ears.
Carter opened his eyes and stared at a white ceiling. Something jumped onto his chest. Carter grunted slightly, looking down at Otto.
"Ding dong, the Kings not dead." Otto grinned, cocking his head. Carter adjusted himself slightly.
"Good to see you too." He scratched the cats ear.

"What happened?" Carter asked, looking around the hospital like room. There was someone else lying under covers in a bed across from him.
"The Queen of Hearts? The twins? Georgia?"
"Calm down there." Otto muttered, climbing up his owners chest and pushing him back onto the bed. "What do you think I just let them die once you fainted?"
"Wouldn't surprise me."
Otto pawed his owners nose. "The cards banished the Queen to- Well I didn't really pay attention after that. The point is; You're not dead yet!"
Carter smiled slightly. "I guess not."

Carter over at thee sound of a door creaking open. In entered Fiona and Felix, Georgia following them on crutches.
"How you doing England?" Fiona smiled. "Or is it King England now?"
Carter raised an eye brow. "What?"
Felix tilted his head. He had several new stitches across his face and chest. "You know. The whole King of Wonderland thing?"
Carter stared at them, wide eyed. "Me?"
"No." Otto muttered. "The Loch Ness monster. Of course it's you moron."

Carter ran his hands through his hair. "No, no. There's some mistake. I can't be a king."
"And why not?" White asked, hopping up onto this bed beside him.
"Because-Because well I can't talk in front of crowds and, and I can't fight at all and I'm not really that great with people and-"
"Oh yeah." Georgia laughed. "You're just terrible with people. It's not like people followed you across the globe or anything."
"You guys are different." Carter insisted. "And besides, I don't know how to be a king. I-I just want to go home..."
Carter felt bad for saying it. But, despite the others wishes, he got dressed and followed them out of the hospital wing.

"Here you go your majesty." White said solemnly, gesturing to a large wooden door. Carter pushed it open to find a balcony looking over the city from earlier, Piquet. Standing opposite the door, was a large mirror, it's frame made of ornate polished gold.
"It's beautiful." Fiona breathed.
"It looks expensive." Otto muttered, tapping Carters foot.
Carter stepped forward, adjusting the collar of his shirt. The wind howled around him, whipping his hair around his face. A storm was just starting to brew in the distance.

"How do I use it?" Carter asked.
White shrugged. "I don't know. The Looking Glass hasn't been used in over one hundred years."
Carter rested his hand against the frame.
"There are stories." Said a voice. Everyone jumped to find the Mad Hatter standing in the doorway, a cup of tea in his hands.
"That all you have to do is believe in it, and it will take you where you want to go."

Carter looked around at the others. "Well then." He chewed his bottom lip. "I guess this is goodbye."
White looked up at him. "Please your highness! I beg you to reconsider. Who will rule if not you?"
Carter hesitated. "I'm sure there will be someone much more suitable."
"More suitable than the chosen one?"
Carter nodded. "I-I'm sorry."
He knelt down and shook the rabbits hand.

Standing up, he moved to Felix.
"Thank you." He said, shaking the scarecrows straw hand.
"No problem." Felix smiled. "Say hello to John for me."
Carter nodded. "Well lost boy, I hope you find your way home to Neverland."
Felix clasped him on the shoulder before moved around to the twins.

"You pair were the first people I met." He smiled, a tear welling in the corner of his eye. "You saved my ass more times than I can count and... And I'm never going to forget you. Either of you."
He leant and hugged Fiona. As he moved to Georgia, she grabbed the front of his shirt.
"What are you-"
She leant up and kissed, him. Blushing terrible, Georgia let go of his shirt.
"See-See you later England."
Before Carter could say anything else, she pushed him backwards, and he stumbled through the looking glass...
