Hydroponics
"We're in trouble." Emma says, breaking the silence.
"I know."
"Without me, though, at least Mikah's army is less than what it was."
"There's that, at least."
"And I can turn some people. As long as Mikah hasn't put silver paint on them."
"Would it be wrong of me to say that he probably has by now?"
"It wouldn't. He was already putting out the order when we left to see you." Emma replies.
"Great, so it's a two on, what, 200 hundred?" I rub my temples. "We can hold them off, at least until the Amazonian's get here."
"This is going to be hard."
"Even with an army equal to theirs." I reach for the back pack, the one with the food, and I pull out a package. "Here, you're probably thirsty by now."
"I am." Emma remarks. She pulls out a package, and then makes a face.
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah." Her face suddenly turns somber, and guilty. "Mikah-Mikah said that uh- he had us only drink from one species."
"Human?" I raise a brow, and she nods her head. "It'll be okay. We all fall off the wagon at one point."
"I know. The recovery is going to be heck."
"I can promise you that, but you'll get through it, I promise."
"Might not even have to go through it, though." She smile sadly.
"What are you-?" I cut myself off. "Ah." I pull out a pouch myself, and start to drink. Emma does the same to finish off hers, even though it isn't human. "We'll be okay."
"Okay even though we're dead?"
"Okay even though we're dead," I echo.
We hear a crunch in the distance. It's been twenty minutes. Mikah's army starts charging at us, once more. All of them are covered in silver paint.
I point my arrow right off the bat, and hit a few of them. Emma also gets a few, but it isn't enough. I look out of the corner or my eyes, and see someone charging at me. I quickly point my weapon, but all of my ammunition flies out of my quiver, as if being carried away by the wind. I take steps back ward, avoiding him, until I'm back into a tree.
I look over, and see that the same has happened to Emma.
Is this how I'm going to die?
Crowds of Mikah's army circle us, weapons pointed. MIkah steps forward.
"I didn't want it to end like this." He says coldly. I hear the click of their weapons, they're locked and loaded. I close my eyes, and wait for the inevitable to happen.
A whiz through the trees and a thud on the grow forces my eyes open. I look over at Emma, who's looking back at me.
Or is she?
Her eyes quickly look so that she's looking over my shoulder. I look over in the direction she's looking in, and see the Amazonian's, standing with their shoulders back, chest out, eyes with pride, and gazing upon the field with bravery.
"You will release the councilwoman and her sister, now." Their leader calls out.
"And why would I do that?" Mikah barks, turning to face her.
"We have more people and fire power than your army by ten fold. We are willing to take them by force." The brave warrior calls out, her brave voice booming.
"Who's to say that I won't shoot them first?" Mikah raises a brow.
The leader smirks, and looks to her left. The woman to her left closes her eyes, and focuses hard. On what, I don't know. Is she using an instinct?
In the blink of an eye, though, Emma and I are transported from the trees, to among the Amazonian army.
"Thank you." I nod to the leader.
"It is my highest honor." The leader smiles. "Call me Maya."
"Call me Can-"
"Nice trick." Our formalities are cut short, when Mikah steals the attention back. "But fresh bites are powerful."
"Sure they are, but when there is ten to one, perhaps you want to rethink that." Maya responds.
"Alright then, prove me wrong." Mikah opens his arms up to welcome the challenge. "CHARGE!" He yells, and stand there for a moment, as if to ponder their chances. "Did you hear me? I said charge!" This time, his army listens, and starts running forward.
It all starts to go into slow motion, one of the Amazonian's throws me a new quiver, this time with more arrows, another crossbow, and a dagger. I take it gladly, and fire a few shots. I got most of my shots right, accept for a few that just barely grazed my enemy.
One pounces right for me, but I stab them in the torso before they can do everything. I push him off, and get back up, fast enough that I can see an arrow coming straight for Emma, who stands right beside me. I shove her out of the way, and fire a shot into where it came from. A cry from whoever was aiming for Emma goes so the whole battlefield can hear it. It can be heard, even though the grunts, curses, and orders fly out, too.
I extend my hand to Emma, and she takes it. "That was close." She says as she lets out a huge breath.
"Closer than I would've liked. You okay?" I respond, still firing off shots.
"Yeah, you?"
"Me? I'm doing dandy." Emma lets out a little laugh when I say this.
"Got room for one more?" I turn my head over, to see my brother standing there.
"David!" Emma and I cry out at the same time.
"You came back?"
"Took a little nap, and I'm fine." David shrugs. "Not to mention, Reigna Na'im can be quite persuasive."
"You guys spoke?" Emma asks as we start to take a few steps back to get a better ground on Mikah's shrinking army.
"Very briefly, when she told the Italian's to go and prove ourselves to the humans. She told me to come back here, though. Told me here was exactly where I need to be."
"She was right." Emma nods, knowingly.
The fighting continues. Sometimes I would have to break away from my siblings, but we'd come back together in the end. Finally, Mikah's army is dwindling to the single digits. I fire an arrow right into someone's chest, and the collapse to the ground. A few of the Amazonian's do the same, so now it's just Mikah.
A wave of hope washes over me. We've never gotten this close to ending it all. I look over at Emma and David, who look to be having the same moment. He's gotten away before, though, so I'm not letting my guard down. Not yet.
Mikah still has that arrogant look on his face. "Nice work."
"Drop you weapon." I try to sound calm, yet commanding, as he holds a gun in his hand.
He drops it, letting it fall to the ground. Somehow, he still lets out an evil chuckle. "All I wanted was to not have to hide who I am. Who we are. Think about the Stonewall Riots, or the Civil Rights Movement. Think about those, won't you, and think about which side you're on. The oppressors."
"You will not talk about those events in such a way!" David shouts. I put my arm on his shoulder as he takes a step forward, and give him a look that says, 'Not yet.' David takes a step back to where he was.
"My apologies. If I may have another word? Won't you grant a dying man some last words?" Mikah raises an eyebrow.
I look over to the warriors beside me, then I look back at him. "Make. It. Quick."
"I told you something in this war, Canada. It seems you will have forgotten it. I said, that I will not stop fighting for this cause until I win, or I die."
He pulls a small ball out from behind his back, and observes it. I load up my bow, unsure of what it is. I fire the arrow right into his chest, and he presses the button in the center, tosses it up, and collapses to the ground. His eyes still remain wide open, but they are lifeless.
I had forgotten the ball up until this point, when it falls to the ground, and detonates, sending out a beam of silver light. It explodes, sending the sharp silver particles into the air, and it gives enough force to send me flying.
I fall to the ground, and the world goes black.
I catch a flash of two silhouettes stand above me. Those two, turn to four silhouettes. Then soon, a whole army stands behind them, but the four in front are the most clear. They're so clear, I can make out their faces.
On my left, my birth mother and father stand and stare at me, a small, proud smile on their lips.
On my right, Abigail and Matthias smile at me, and still remain in each others arms.
"Head Councilwoman Wayward?"
The silhouettes start to fade out of sight.
No, come back.
Please, come back.
I feel my eyes open, and my lungs take in a sharp breath. I sit up, and see that once more, I'm in the forest.
Maya kneels next to me, twigs in her hair and dirt on her clothes the definitely wasn't there the last I saw her. "Thank goodness you are awake. I was so worried."
"I'm-I'm fine," I sit up slowly, feeling a sharp pain on my chest. I slowly rub the center, where it hurts the most.
"My apologies, your heart stopped beating, so I had to do some chest compression's."
"It's okay, and thank you. You saved my life."
"It was my highest honor, here," She hands me a jug of blood. "It's swine, I promise." She tells me, and I take a big sip.
"Thank you."
"Anytime." She smiles. "DAVID!" She cries out, and David comes barreling through the woods, and smiles when he sees that I'm here and alive.
He books it over to me, and once he's here, he wraps me in his arms once again. "You've scared me too many times in these past two days."
"My bad."
"Hey, I'm just happy you're alive." He beaks away, but there's some sort of a liquid on his side.
"David, you're injured." I say, recognize the familiar orange-ish color coming from his thigh.
He quickly clamps down on his leg, but it able to just wipe the bleeding off. He then looks at my thigh with absolute terror. "Canada, you're the one that's-"
"Where's Emma?" I cut him off, my sister suddenly flooding all of my thoughts.
"We haven't found her yet, but you're injured. We need to get you to a hospital-"
"Not until I've found my sister." I push off the ground, so I'm up on my feet. I look down at the silver that's pierced my leg, likely causing silver to go through my veins.
"Canada, no, you're in pain. You could be dying."
"But my sister could already be dead." I limp forward, attempting to use my speed, but if fails, and I fall to the ground. I crawl through the forest. I close my eyes, and fill my head with thoughts of Emma, and I let it pull me towards her.
Finally, I see her stunning hair covered in leaves.
I crawl faster, and faster, until I reach her. Her eyes remain closed.
"Come on, Emma, please." I shake her a few times, getting more violent as I do so. Just like what I did with Abigail and Matthias. This time, though, her bright eyes shine as they open.
"Canada." She cups my face, and tears threaten to fill my eyes.
"I'm here, Emma." I wrap her in my arms. Tighter than I ever have.
"Thank you, for taking me home." She whispers in my ear.
We let go of each other, and I smile at her, and she weakly smiles back.
"Hey, Canada," She asks. "What do you call a three humped camel?"
"I don't-"
"Canada? Emma?" David's voice yells through the trees.
I turn my head so I can yell back at him. "We're over here!" I can't hide the glee in my voice. I turn my vision back to Emma and I's legs. "I don't know, what do you call a three humped camel?"
Emma remains silent.
I look up at her in confusion, only to see her eyes slowly rolling back into her head.
"No! No! NO! Emma, please, Emma, wake up, please. I don't want to lose another family member. Please, Emma, wake up." I beg. I shake her. I push her. I block her air ways. I slap her. Nothing works. "Please." I shift a little bit, so I can get a better look at her.
When I shift, the leaves move, too. They fall off of her torso, revealing a large piece of silver, logged in the middle of her her gut. I let out a shriek, and fall back to the ground. I'm right next to her. I turn on my side so I can look at her better.
"I love you." I grab hold of her hand. Tears continue to stream out of my eyes.
"Canada?" I hear David's scampering feet.
I can't even lift my head off of the ground.
"Emma?" His voice falls soft. "Emma." He kneels next to her other side, and holds her hand. He leans down, and lays a kiss upon her forehead.
I hear another set of footsteps coming from where David came from.
"David?" Maya's voice asks. Her face turns somber once she says Emma. She walks over to me, and helps me sit up. "I am sorry for your loss."
My vision starts to spot. I blink my eyes a few times to get rid of them. They don't stop.
"What's wrong?" Maya asks, and I feel David's attention shift to mine.
No, don't look at me, David. Look at your sister.
"'M fine." I shake my head a few times to get rid of the spinning world, and the heat that now spreads through my veins.
"She's got silver in her veins." David says.
"No, David, be with your sister." The words start coming out jumbled. My eyes keep getting heavier and heavier.
"Medic!" Maya cries out. "Keep your eyes open until they come, Canada."
I can't let out another sound.
Footsteps come through the forest again.
"Keep your eyes open, Canada, please." David begs.
"I'll be-" The spots start to cover more and more of my vision, and they last longer.
"Can-" It sounds like people are speaking to me underwater.
"Head-...-Ward?" Voice start to drop in and out.
My eyelids are so heavy they can't keep them open. I let them shut, and feel my body fall back. From there, for the second time today, the world around me goes black.
